Dialing It Down, but not By Choice
After a week of some of the most epic gravel grinding my husband and I have ever done (173 miles with 12,227 feet of climbing), I’ve dialed it down a notch this week, but not by choice. You see, I brought an unexpected souvenir home from vacation… Covid.
I woke up last Saturday morning – the day we were driving home – with a mild headache and some body aches. I dismissed it as possibly being dehydrated after our epic ride on Friday. On Sunday, I felt much worse and developed chills so I canceled all in-person appointments for Monday. It was a smart move because I took a Covid test late Monday afternoon and it was positive.
I’ve felt progressively better each day this past week and hope to be back to joining the world in person soon.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Rest day
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
I woke up feeling a little better than I had the day before so after my first virtual client, I set out to lift weights. I struggled throughout my weight lifting session and had to take several breaks before finishing up. By afternoon I needed a nap and after waking up I took a Covid test. I was actually surprised that it was positive (and so definitively) after having avoided Covid for 2.5 years.

We woke up sad because we had planned to ride in the evening’s Oink at the Moon event with our fellow VeloPigs. With a clear sky and temps in the 70’s at the 5 PM roll time and gradually dropping as the evening wore on, we were acutely aware that the weather couldn’t be more perfect for a fall evening ride with friends. Stupid Covid!
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: October 2 – 8 / Wrapping Up a Week in New England
- • Tuesday – Portland Six-Lighthouse Tour and Back Cove Trail Loop
Questions:
- • What cool events does your running or cycling group host, or do you and your friends plan? ~ The Cruisers (my running group) used to have breakfast runs. Oink at the Moon is one of the coolest events our gravel cycling group hosts.
- • What was your favorite workout of the week? ~ I didn’t have a favorite workout, they were all equally meh. I was grateful; however, that I felt good enough to continue working out, albeit scaled back, while sick.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? ~ No
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Oh no what a bummer! That is not the vacation souvenir you wanted. Seems like lots of people are still getting covid for the first time lately. I just got the new booster so hoping for protection. Sounds like you are not too sick and hope you recover quickly. Did you husband get it too?
Thanks, Deborah, definitely not a fun souvenir! And yes, my husband got sick two days after me, but luckily we both have had relatively mild cases.
Ack. So many people I know are getting covid these days. It sounds like your symptoms were pretty mild and you already are on the mend, so that’s good at least.
Thanks, Coco!
Geez, I just read Jessie’s post! I’ve reminded my husband he has to continue to be careful so I can stay well! Although really it’s a crap shoot. I’m sorry you came home with COVID, but glad that it sounds like you’re on the mend. Stupid COVID indeed!
Continue to feel better!
Thanks, Judy! It really is a crap shoot because this was a vacation where we were around far fewer people than normal and outside much of the time.
Ugh to Covid! It’s been 6 weeks since I had it. It was not terrible but I did not feel good for about 2 weeks. I hope you bounce back quickly!
My favorite workout of the week…hmmm probably strength with SJ on Saturday. It was not a great week for me–work is brutal and I am so stressed. So no to the race too.
Thanks, Wendy!
Ugh- this must be the next Covid wave (I can’t wait!) Glad you and your husband didn’t get too sick. And I’m glad you got sick AFTER the vacation and not DURING. Hope you’re feeling better!
Thanks, Jenny! Yes, our timing for getting Covid was pretty good, all things considered.
Man…Covid is still here ruining plans, isn’t it? I was in the same boat, I had taken so many tests over the past 2.5 years and they were all negative, I was so shocked to see two lines show up, and similarly…very definitively two lines. I can’t go back into the office until I test negative, which I’ve heard can take awhile. I’m feeling a lot better already though but am going to wait two more days to try to run. .
Here’s hoping you get a negative test result on Tuesday! I retested this afternoon and I’m still positive even though I’m feeling mostly back to normal. I let all of my clients know, and not surprisingly, they’re opting to wait until I test negative before returning to in-person sessions. Additionally, I won’t be allowed to teach any of my classes at the 55+ community until I text negative (which makes complete sense).
Oh no! I really do feel like there’s been a rise in Covid in the last month or so. It sounds like your symptoms aren’t too bad so I really hope you’ll recover quickly.

Thanks, Michelle!
Oh no! You’re the fourth person this week that I know who has dealt with Covid this month. It seems like we’re in another mini surge right now. I’m glad that you felt better each day and that the case wasn’t too severe.
Thanks, Kim!
Ugh, hope you continue to feel better each day, Debbie. Seems like we’re all getting hit with stuff…COVID and/or glute (& vicinity) stress, LOL Personally, I’d take COVID, any day, over this grumpy glute (I think it’s actually the piriformis)…but I was pretty lucky when I had the virus. Favorite workout? Probably Thursday’s upper-body stack. Yes, I raced (and the grumpy glute was along for the ride) 😉
Yeah, we were both very lucky to get relatively mild cases. Here’s hoping your grumpy glute “tests negative” soon!
Well boo!! I guess Covid is flying around again, after hearing a few people mention it now. My son was home sick from school on Friday and I made sure he took a test over the weekend. I’m glad the sickness held off for you until after your trip! That would have made for a miserable biking journey. Glad you are on the mend!

Yes, thank goodness I got sick on the day we were leaving Vermont, and not earlier. I got very lucky!
Not something I wanted to read. Hope your case was mild and that you are feeling better. Happy that was after your vacation not before or during
My favorite of the week was my 5k on Saturday.
Thanks, Darlene, and yes, I’m lucky that Covid waited until after my vacation was almost over to rear its ugly head.
