Celebratory Miles
Three years ago I started doing a special birthday ride by cycling the same number of miles as the number of years old I was turning. The past two years my friends joined in on the fun, but this year it sort of fizzled out when the weather forecast was iffy and I decided to keep it closer to home and on the W&OD Trail (rather than out on a big road loop) so I could bail if necessary; although, those who know me well, know that would be nearly impossible for me to do.
I’ve started doing something similar with birthday runs and walks, but at my age, I need to add a decimal. Hopefully, today I’ll walk 6.5 miles and tomorrow afternoon I can run 6.5 miles…
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Walking: 5 miles
• Average pace: 16:30
• Elevation gain: 165 feet
• Start time: 10:31 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 70°, cloudy, and humid, climbing to 73°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
I met my friend Betsy for a walk between rain showers.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Gardening: 1.5 hours of fall clean-up
Tuesday
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 17:23
• Elevation gain: 97 feet
• Start time: 11:56 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails to my polling place
• Weather: 56° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, nylon shell, and visor
I took advantage of a pretty day, albeit much cooler than the past few weeks, and walked to our polling place to vote.
Wednesday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:25
• Elevation gain: 112 feet
• Start time: 6:01 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 34° (feels like 29°)
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
My morning started with a crisp pre-dawn run. I find running in the cold is so invigorating and running in the dark so peaceful. The combination of the two made for a perfect run.
Thursday
Cycling: 12 miles
• Average speed: 16.9 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 6:53 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63°
Gardening: 1 hour of fall clean-up
I multitasked by riding my spin bike (affiliate link) while training a client virtually.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Cycling: 65 miles
• Average speed: 14.5 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 2,343 feet
• Start time: 9:38 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Sterling to Hamilton, then Sterling to Leesburg loops
• Weather: 61° and sunny, climbing to 68° and cloudy
It was a beautiful day for an early birthday ride – my actual birthday is tomorrow, but work will preclude us from doing a long ride so we did it two days early. Even though there was pretty constant wind and wind gusts up to 25 MPH, it wasn’t as much of a factor as I’d feared and we had a great time.
Bill took this picture with his phone while riding along beside me. If I tried that, not only would I drop my phone and break it, but I’d crash, too.

happy almost birthday to my birthday twin! I do also like to run or bike my birthday miles. I would also crash if I tried to photo while pedaling! Hope you have a great birthday
Thanks, Deborah! Happy birthday eve to you, too!
Happy birthday and congrats on the birthday ride! II haven’t done a mileage run- maybe 4.0 for 40, actually 🙂 Love your colorful cycling kit!
Thanks, Jessie!
Ooh, Happy Birthday! The nice thing about cycling is you can complete the full distance- great idea to add a decimal for the run and walk. Your pre-birthday bike ride sounds really nice, and I love the photo (how did he do that??? I would definitely crash if I tried to take a photo while riding.).
I usually try to do a longer run on my birthday, but I also can’t match the miles (or even come close.) Depending on what’s going on, I like to do something like run to the beach (which is about 10 miles.) Anyway, I hope you have a great day!
Thanks, Jenny!
Sounds like wonderful ways to celebrate your milestone birthday! Unfortunately my birthday is in the deep of Winter, so often it’s not really an option except on the mill. It all just depends on how it plays out.
I do like the cooler weather for running, too — but not dark! No thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Well, my walk didn’t happen today because it was crazy windy outside and I was busy doing a bunch of projects before I go to the farm on Tuesday morning.
Well you know all about my birthday antics, LOL. While I try to incorporate the numbers in various combinations (including metric numbers), my favorite endeavor is the Week of Pi (2022 will be the fourth year). In honor of your special day, I’ll plan on 6.5 miles (on the bike) tomorrow morning 😉
I may have gotten the idea for running my birthday with a decimal in the middle from you. Thanks for joining me for a 6.5 workout!
Happy almost birthday! I can’t believe you are 65. You look amazing! I think I ran 6.0 miles for my birthday this year. It’s definitely intimidating to even think about these kinds of numbers, isn’t it?
Thanks, Wendy! Agreed, when did all those years slip by? I still feel 35 on the inside.
I do a birthday run for myself (with decimals!) and then for my two kids (they are only 8 and 10 so it’s still doable!) Hope you’ve had an amazing day today and you looked fabulous for your birthday ride, by the way! Such beautiful colours!
Thank you! I love that in addition to your own, you also run miles for your children’s birthdays.
Happy Birthday!! I hope that you’re having a great day so far.
I usually do a solo birthday run (with decimals). I find its such a fun way to kick off another trip around the sun!
Thanks, Kim!
Happy birthday!
I definitely always try to get in some kind of fitness on my birthday. It’s never anything specific, but it has to be something.
Thanks, Jenn!
Love your cycling top
A few years ago I started running the date on random days when I didn’t know what mileage to run, and that turned into running my year. Since I was lucky enough to be off work on my bday during COVID, I turned it into a longer run and ran 11.23 in KMs since it’s hard to run double digits when you don’t have to, mileage wise. Last year I think I might have run 8.4 for 4.2 x 2. Not sure what this year will hold.
Thanks, Cari! Looking forward to hearing what you decide to run on Wednesday for your birthday!
