A Snowless Winter?
The DC metro area isn’t known for getting a lot of snow, but this year Momma N is taking it to an extreme. Other than driving through snow in SWVA on my way home from the farm in November and on the way to the farm in December, the snow has avoided me. On the upside, no snow means not having to worry about navigating slippery roads and trails when out on a run or walk.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 25 miles

• Start time: 8:46 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 65°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
I know I talk big during the summer about how I’m going to ride through the winter, but the thought of joining the Gravel Rats, at 10:30 when the temperature was in the low 30’s with rain forecasted to start early on in the ride, I opted to stay inside on my spin bike (affiliate link) rather than risking becoming a drowned rat. 😉
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Tuesday
Cycling: 10 miles
• Average speed: 16.9 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 5:49 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°

• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, ear warmer headband, and visor (took jacket and gloves off soon after starting)
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Even though I ran on the paved trails near our neighborhood, I felt like I was running out in the wilderness when I came upon a few mud and standing water crossings.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 14:38 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 148 feet
• Start time: 8:30 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 35° (feels like 29°) and overcast
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, light-weight jacket under velour jacket, gloves, mittens, ear warmer headband, and visor
With imminent rain in the forecast, I rushed for a walk between clients and easily beat the rain which didn’t show up until a couple of hours later.

• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 5:58 AM

If it’s too cold outside to ride our bikes on a Thursday, Kim and I will likely be riding together virtually long before the sun comes up. As always, we had a great time and the miles flew by! Thanks, Kim, for the post race collage!
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 4 miles
• Average pace: 9:24 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 109 feet
• Start time: 11:33 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails and W&OD Trail
• Weather: 48° (feels like 44°) and partly cloudy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, and visor
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I headed out for my run later than planned after getting distracted while working on my blog. By the time I got started it had warmed up considerably and it felt amazing to not have to bundle up.

It is kind of odd that our winter has been so mild. I do like at least one snow day! Wonder if February is going to be crazy cold. I can’t complain bc I have been able to do all of my runs outsdie. Have a great week!
Same here, just give me one pretty snow day and I’ll stop complaining! 😉
I’d gladly send some (or all!) of my snow to you. I have no idea what the cumulative snowfall has been this season, but most of it’s from the past 10 days or so (maybe 10-12 inches?). All I know is I’m ready for spring weather! As always, it was fun riding & chatting with you on Thursday:-)
Well… I don’t want all of your snow, just enough to have fun in for one day! 😉 And after that I’ll be ready for spring as well.
Yes, it’s always fun riding and chatting with you, too!
That’s so fun to meet up virtually with Kim! We’ve been mild by Chicago-area standards, but just like that we got 7″ of snow yesterday so I won’t be frequenting my favorite trails until we get a thaw. Enjoy that mild weather while you can!
It’s great that Kim and I both have Thursday mornings available with our busy schedules.
I’m sure I’d be complaining if I were stuck on the treadmill instead of being able to run outside, but I would like at least one little snowfall this winter.
Our weather has been so mild and up until this weekend, we didn’t get much snow at all this winter. Now it’s a winter wonderland! One of the preserves where I like to run has groomed its trails for the bikers, so I hope to take advantage of that mid-week! Enjoy your mild winter!
How great that they groom the trails at the preserve. Enjoy your runs there this week!
Oh, that’s fun- you and Kim seem to be making your virtual rides a weekly thing! That’s a nice way to mix things up. You had a great variety of running, cycling and strength this week. I fear that now you’ve wished for snow, you’re going to get dumped on, big-time! Get your shovels ready.
Too much snow! Even though it hasn’t been bad, it just makes things tricky.
Glad you & Kim are able to get together for your rides.
Yes, it sounds like you guys have had a lot of snow. At least we haven’t had to deal with the sloppy aftermath…
Haha, isn’t it ironic when blogging distracts us from our workouts?
I should be outdoors right now and yet here I am…
You had a good week! So nice that you can do those rides together with Kim!
Heading out the door now!
So true. 😉 Hope you have a great workout!
We’ve had a mixed but quite cold winter, and even had snow two weeks ago. Usually it’s been cold and windy with a lot of rain and fog. Now we seem to be getting into a nice week with sun and 9C, I’m going out for a walk with a friend this afternoon.
The online social bike rides seems to be so enjoyable!! How lovely to do them weekly!
Ugh, wind and fog are two weather conditions I don’t like; although fog makes for pretty pictures.
It’s great to have workout partners and the pandemic showed us that they can even be virtual. 🙂
Another solid week! Your workouts with Kim are always so awesome!
No snow, obviously, although it did get cold enough to frost. Brrr. I had a few good runs, but a lot of the week is a blur. I’m here to be more mindful this week.
Yes, Kim and I are enjoying our weekly workouts! 🙂
I’m a fan of a mild winter 🙂
Looks like a great week Deb!
You must be loving your mild winter in London, after experiencing years of winters in Minnesota. 🙂
Another solid week of workouts for you!
We are also having a very snowless Winter which is so weird for us. We haven’t even received an inch of snow this Winter!
Thanks, Kim!
Wow, what mild weather in your area! We have a Winter Warriors group, but unless it in the 60’s I don’t have any plans on riding! Great workouts this week. How fun to have a virtual ride with Kim too!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly workouts – let it snow!
We’ve had a pretty mild winter. Tomorrow’s run is going to be much colder!
