Following Up on Choosing a Sport
Thanks for everyone’s input on my question last week regarding the possibility of making cycling my summer sport and running my winter sport. I think I have a plan and once the weather improves to the point to where I’m riding outside several days a week, I’ll cut running back to only one day per week.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 18 miles
• Average speed: 17.5 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 10:17 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
It was cold and windy outside so I opted to stay inside and ride on my spin bike (affiliate link). The afternoon was nice so I got outside to do some more spring cleanup on the deck.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Tuesday
Running: 2 miles
• Average pace: 9:50 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 56 feet
• Start time: 6:42 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 50° with the sun coming up
• What I wore: shorts, tank, gloves, and visor
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:27 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 82 feet
• Start time: 7:09 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 50° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, tank, gloves, and visor
Rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
My calf felt absolutely fine after my first mile so I continued on with a second mile. No doubt my neighbors thought I was nuts if they they happened to see me as I placed my phone in the cherry tree prior to running back and forth in front of it. LOL
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Push-ups have been difficult for me to do since injuring my left wrist in the summer of 2020 – it’s fine now, but with the position of my hand on the floor, push-ups still aggravate my wrist. I compromise by doing them on the bar set at its lowest setting. It’s still quite challenging and my wrist stays happy.
Thursday
Cycling: 16 miles
• Average speed: 17.5 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 6:00 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 67°
• What I wore: bike shorts and tank
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 15:42 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 93 feet
• Start time: 12:46 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 84° and sunny, turning cloudy
• What I wore: shorts and tank
Kim and I had another great early morning workout and laughed at the different messaging on our tanks. Later in the day I took advantage of the gorgeous weather and got outside for a walk.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 2 miles
• Average pace: 9:40 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 39
• Start time: 9:14 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 45° (feels like 40°) and partly cloudy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, and visor (took shell off halfway into run)
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:26 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 5
• Start time: 9:54 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 47° (feels like 45°) and sunny
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, gloves, and visor
Rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
The red buds lining the parkway are in full bloom so I couldn’t resist running on the trail along the parkway. I discovered quickly that I was overdressed and had to shed my nylon shell about halfway through my run.

Looks like a great week of strength and cardio. We sure did have some crazy hot temps this week. Hope that is not a precursor to summer
Me, too, but this coming week’s forecast seems to be for cooler temps.
Your plank for looks awesome — I expect no less from you. 🙂
Obviously I don’t usually photo myself running, but when I’m doing hill repeats in the neighborhood or strides near my house I’m sure people think I’m nuts!
So many pretty flowering trees there!
I suspect a lot of us running bloggers’ neighbors wonder just what we’re doing when taking our running pictures. LOL
And yes, the trees have been especially beautiful this year!
That running pic turned out nice! So what if the neighbors think you’re nuts, LOL (I’m sure many of the locals think the same about me). We had a beautiful redbud tree in Michigan, and I really miss having all those pretty blossoms right outside my window.
If my neighbors say out loud that they think I’m nuts, I’ll quit inviting to our parties. 😉
Well, the picture taken through the tree was worth any neighbor head-shaking — love it!
Between my Mom’s situation and the Cherry Blossom race, I have not been on my bike in ages! 🙁 Today would be a great day for it, but I’ve got too many chores to catch up on.
Those redbuds are gorgeous!
Thanks, Coco! My husband and I finally got outside on our gravel bikes today!
Yay! I’m glad your calf is doing so well.
I also haven’t been able to do pushups because of my wrist- I’m going to try your version at the gym this week. I think it will work well- i just can’t put my hand flat down and put pressure on it.
To answer your question- college football is my favorite sport to watch nowadays, but I did enjoy basketball this past month as well. I used to LOVE watching baseball, but now I rarely watch it. Of course I don’t play any of those sports- the only thing I’m coordinated enough to do it run, LOL.
Thanks, Jenny! I hope the pushup modification helps! And yeah, same here – I rarely took aerobics classes because I have two left feet (or in my case, it would be two right feet).
My neighbors already think I’m nuts lol–and nothing I do surprises them anymore!!
If I had to pick, I love spectating football even though it’s a brutal sport. I also love spending a day at a baseball game. But I love to run and I love waterskiing.
And you’ll be waterskiing again before you know it!
As a former figure skater and coach I enjoy watching that. I got into college football and basketball more than usual over the past year. Glad to hear your calf continues to be pain free. I often wonder what my neighbors might be thinking if they catch me taking some fake running pics! Haha!
I didn’t realize you were a figure skater and coach. How cool!
Hmmm, I do like Weds because that’s my last day of work for the week, but Thursday is always a special day around our house because it’s pizza and beer for dinner! Love your tank tops 😉
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly workouts – Happy Easter!
I love having a tradition of a certain dinner on a particular night. We used to have Chipotle Thursdays until we eventually got tired of it.
You have a strong upper body in that first photo! All those strength sessions are definitely worth it!
Does your wrist bother you on the bike? Or is it fine with that particular angle and pressure?
Yes, my wrist bothered me terribly on my bike the entire summer of 2020 and I had to wear a brace AND adjust my handlebars to a weird angle. I felt it a little today (because of all of the recent painting I’ve been doing) and I wished I’d worn my brace.
The picture from the tree turned out lovely. Worth it!
Cycling for summer, running for winter- interesting!
Great modification on those pushups! Definitely still a challenge I’m sure.
Thanks, Jessie!
I felt really strong on today’s hilly gravel ride so maybe I’m on to something. I only ran on Tuesday so my legs had plenty of time to recover.
Oh shoot, I don’t think my comment posted originally, I’m reading and catching up on blogs on our drive back from north England. Running as a winter sport, cycling for summer- I suppose that makes sense, especially for cycling!
Love the picture from the tree. Worth the effort. Creative eye there Deb!
Yep, it posted.
Look at all those pretty cherry blossoms!
I’m sorry about your wrist. That can be really challenging when you’re trying to do body weight work.
My wrist has healed and feels great doing pretty much everything except pushups on the floor and straight arm planks. I’ve been painting a ton these last two weeks and I’m feeling it a little bit today, but otherwise, it’s fine.
LOL I love that tequila squad tank!
I love the photo that you captured from the tree.
Thanks, I had that tank made for a Cinco de Mayo race. I love it, too!
Love those flower pics… I would do the same but so many people around in Central Park.
No race… I am still rebuilding so I am volunteering instead.
My 8 miler was the best because I haven’t run that far in months.
Good news about your calf… hope it stays pain free
I bet you enjoyed your 8-miler! You’re so good to volunteer at races.
