Shut Up, Garmin
After each of my rides and my walk this past week, Garmin (affiliate link) had to nerve to tell me that my workout was unproductive. LOL I’ve got to do a little research to see why, but perhaps it’s due to my average heart rate – I noticed that my average HR was about 80% of max. Of course, with the temps rising, my body is working harder to adjust so my heart rate is tracking higher than usual. With that in mind, I tried to ride a little easier. I feel so much stronger on my bike than I did just a few weeks ago so I know I’m gaining strength and endurance. Now to just convince Garmin! 😜
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 26 miles
• Average speed: 15 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp

• Weather: 56° and cloudy, climbing to 67° and mostly cloudy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, light jacket, and fingerless gloves (took jacket off at halfway point)
For Memorial Day Weekend there were signs placed about every half mile on the W&OD Trail honoring fallen military members and giving trail users an opportunity to reflect and say a little prayer for each young man or woman pictured.
Monday

Riding alone, I intentionally didn’t push as much as usual and cut my ride shorter, turning around and heading home after the second climb.

Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 15:04 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 122 feet
• Start time: 9:36 AM

• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Hamilton loop
• Weather: 72° and sunny, climbing to 81°
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
Exhausted from the week and with a solo ride planned for later in the morning, I begged off from my usual Thursday morning cardio workout with Kim. As a result, I didn’t get up until 6:15 AM, 15 minutes into our usual workout time, and sleeping in for me.
And hey, I’m getting better at taking selfies while riding! It’s going to be all fun and games until I drop my phone.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Cycling: 42 miles
• Average speed: 14.3 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,558 feet
• Start time: 8:04 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Purcellville loop with Meadowlark, Irene, and Dry Mill jaunts
• Weather: 70° and sunny, climbing to 85°
• What I wore: bike bibs, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
Our Dawn Patrol friend Dave reached out to see if we’d like to do a road ride (we usually ride gravel on Saturdays). We ended up riding the W&OD Trail with some jaunts on some quieter roads along the way. It was the first really hot day of the year and at the end of the ride Garmin told me I’m 16% acclimated to the heat.
It wasn’t until I finished my ride and was rewarded with a badge from Garmin that I realized it was World Bicycle Day.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: May 21 – 27 / Remembering That Memorial Day is More Than Just a Three-Day Weekend
Questions
- • What “national” or “world” or “global” days you you try to celebrate? ~ I always try to go for a run on Global Running Day, which is this coming Wednesday. Unless I have an unexpected cancelation, my day is going to be slammed with work so it’s either going to be a 5 AM or 5 PM run.
- • Which workouts were your most enjoyable, toughest, and/or memorable? ~ Saturday’s ride with my hubby and friend was super fun.
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ No
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

You logged a lot of miles on wheels this week! Those biking selfies are tricky, but I think they look interesting, due to the complexity of getting them done 😉 I’d seen World Bicycle Day was this weekend, but forgot about it until Garmin “rewarded” me with a badge, after DAM to DSM yesterday. I made things right, this morning, by going for a legit bike ride, LOL, even if it was a day late.
A year ago I wouldn’t have dared to try a selfie on my bike, but I’m getting more comfortable now.
Hey, if Garmin rewarded you with the badge, Saturday’s ride was legit, too! 😉
I was a little annoyed with my Garmin’s thoughts on my runs lately. I am doing the best I can right now. Apparently I am maintaining but it’s categorizing my runs as recovery. I mean who asked?!
Who asked, indeed! LOL
Garmin told me I was extra ‘stressed’ this morning and I’m still wondering how it figured that out!
I did race this weekend, running a half marathon on the boulevards in Chicago. It was my hardest but also my most enjoyable run this week. Recap to come.
Cool, congrats on completing a road half – can’t wait to read your recap! I ran the Chicago Spring Half several years ago. Was this the same half?
Wow, you had a great week- four long outdoor bike rides and three strength sessions. You must be loving the beautiful cycling weather.
I don’t usually do anything special for “national” or “global” days (unless of course it’s “National Waffle Day” or something like that, ha ha.) Since Global Running Day is this Wednesday, I will be running! It is nice when it works out like that.
I also enjoy celebrating National Margarita Day on February 22nd. 😉
And yes, our weather has been amazing recently!
Garmin can be so off sometimes!
I hiked 89 kilometres last week and then did a 2-hour run when we got back. And Garmin told me I was in “Recovery”. Really?!
Taking selfies while riding is awesome! I tried taking one while running yesterday – and I even struggle with that, ha!
I wish I understood how Garmin determines when our workouts are productive, unproductive, we’re n recovery, etc. Sometimes it seems so random!
Amazing that your Garmin wasn’t happy with your training this week! That’s some impressive cycling mileage. My husband bought a Garmin recently and while it has some very useful functions, it does some very odd readings or estimations.
There are so many national/global/whatever days, aren’t there? Global running day and bicycle day sounds like something to celebrate. I don’t keep track of any of those days and usually only celebrate world whiskey day (and not every year either) because I’m reminded of it on Twitter.
I think Garmin is just being rude! LOL
And yep, there’s a national day for everything!
I’m with you: I’m going to try to get out on Global Running Day. I may even try to add on a track workout in the evening, but that remains to be seen.
Sometimes, “sleeping in” is really the best.
Jenn recently posted…making all the plans!
Fingers crossed for both of us! My day is getting even more booked and my run keeps getting moved to later. I should probably move it to super early AM to make sure it happens.
Another great week of sport.
I cannot run anymore without my Garmin but I don’t trust it about the training status.
Usually I don’t celebrate special days.
No race this week end.
Thanks, Stefano! And I agree about not trusting Garmin’s training status.
Impressed by those selfies! True balance 🙂
I’m not sure about that unproductive message, I don’t listen to it!
LOL, me neither (unless Garmin tells me that my workouts are amazing and then I’ll listen). 😉
I run where I can fit it in, and this year it won’t be on global running day. Enjoy your run tomorrow!
My Garmin doesn’t talk smack to me, although I think the heat acclimation feature sounds kind of cool. Of course I’m hoping to replace mine next month, so who knows?
Hopefully your phone remains safe on the selfies! I think it’s fall over, LOL!
How exciting to have a new Garmin purchase on the horizon!
nice bike mileage this week! I am so looking forward to more km’s on my bike. I don’t ride as much as you but at least we made a start recently. good workouts too, but yeah sometimes you’re tired and need a rest. next week back with Kim!
I did run today, it was very short. I only really do GRD.
No races, no real favorite workouts, just focusing on getting them done!
Just getting back on the bike after some time off is half the battle. I go through that every spring…
