Working Out Even While Traveling
Even though we had a whirlwind trip to Charlotte, NC to see Pablo and his humans, I took my workout clothes with me and didn’t miss a beat. My Wednesday through Friday clients, though? They were on their own!
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 33 miles
• Average speed: 12 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: gravel
• Elevation gain: 2,680 feet
• Start time: 10:23 AM
• Location: western Loudoun loop starting and finishing at Wheatland Springs Brewery
• Weather: 63° and sunny, climbing to 65°
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, and fingerless gloves (took arm sleeves off pretty early on)
Gardening: 30 minutes
My husband and I joined the VeloPigs for a ride and fall picnic. The turnout was fantastic and as a result we were encouraged to break out into our own smaller groups so there wouldn’t be such a huge clump of cyclist together. My husband and I joined a couple of other friends for a relaxing fun ride. The pizza and salad served afterward by a local farm was soooo good!
Monday

Tuesday
Cycling: 27 miles
• Average speed: 14.3 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 794 feet
• Start time: 7:25 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Sterling/Leesburg loop

• Weather: 65° and overcast
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, jacket, ear warmer headband, and fingered gloves
A few miles into my ride, I saw a cyclist in the distance waving her arms for me to stop. It was a young women who had just dropped her chain and had no idea how to put it back on. I was happy my husband had taught me how to do it myself and was able to guide her through the process. Go me!
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Drive to Charlotte, NC
Walking: .52 mile
• Average pace: 24:03 minute/mile

• Start time: 5:08 PM
• Location: Pablo’s neighborhood
• Weather: 76° with the sun setting

Once we got to Charlotte and Pablo calmed down from his zoomies, we took him for a short walk. There’s nothing like feeling loved by a pupster who hasn’t seen you for a couple of months.

In addition to visiting family, we were in Charlotte to attend the Ally Tipoff featuring the Virginia Tech women Hokies against the Iowa Hawkeyes – both final four teams in last year’s basketball NCAA tournament. Planning ahead, I’d brought my Virginia Tech tank and visor to wear while virtually running with Kim.
A little later in the morning, my husband and I borrowed our son and d-i-l’s bikes for a ride on the newly completely McAlpine Creek Greenway which links to the greenway we rode in August to downtown Charlotte.
Not surprisingly, the game between these two top ten ranked teams was fantastic and even though the lady Hokies led through much of the first half, Iowa won 80-76. The 15,192 fans in attendance in the Charlotte Spectrum Center seemed pretty well distributed between Virginia Tech and Iowa.

Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: October 29 – November 4 / Enjoying the Last of Fall’s Beauty
- • Tuesday – Touring Vermont’s Northwest Kingdom
Questions
- • What are your favorite pizza toppings? ~ Normally, I go for mushrooms, onions, and sausage; however, the pizza at the VeloPigs fall picnic had different roasted fall veggies on them and those pizzas were amazing!
- • Which workouts were your most enjoyable, toughest, and/or memorable? ~ The toughest was the first part of my run with Kim where I stepped weird on something while running down a hill and my knee started to hurt really badly. Luckily, it didn’t bother me when running on the flat trail, just up and down hills.
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ No
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Nice job on getting all your workouts in despite travelling!
One of the first things I learned as a bike-riding kid was how to put the chain back on (it was always a good excuse to get really dirty hands, ha!)
I’m surprised that there are cyclists who don’t know how to put it back on. What a relief that you were there to help her out!
Thanks, Catrina!
The cyclist was young (mid-20’s maybe) and said her bike was brand new – not sure if she was new to riding or it was just a new bike.
You got in some great rides this week! Our weather was pretty fantastic for November. I really don’t know how to change a tire or a chain-oops. My favorite workout this week was my short return to running. Fingers crossed I can continue. Have a great week
I have plugs and gup in case I get a flat, but I’d have to Google to remember how to use them. 😉
I hope your runs continue to go well!
Congratulations on staying active. No surprise.
Favorite workout was a group run yesterday.
Yes I did race last Sunday.
Can’t wait to hear about about that race!
I let my husband deal with bike mechanics, but I’m pretty sure I could put my chain back on. Glad you were able to help her out!
You had some nice rides this week.
Pizza — I usually go for veggie toppings—Kalamata olives if I’m in the mood.
My husband does almost all of my bike mechanics, too, but he has taught me a few basics.
My toughest workout was definitely my race yesterday…lots of hills and technical “fun” on the trails, LOL. I barely know how to put air in my tires, so I’d be SOL if my chain popped off. I need to learn a few more biking skills and mechanics, ha ha!!!!
Can’t wait to hear all about your race!
I like veggie pizza. And white pizza! I actually prefer stromboli, but veggie stromboli is hard to find here. And roasted veggies are amazing on pizza!
Bandit misses me when I go to the bathroom, just sayin’. 🙂
How wonderful that you were able to help the biker with her chain!
LOL about Bandit missing you when you go to the bathroom. He’s like, “Mom, I haven’t seen you in forever!”
Next time I make pizza, I’m adding roasted veggies. Yum!
I guess I missed that Pablo and his humans moved to Charlotte! I thought they were in Florida. Much closer for you!
We make our own pizza quite often and have a large repertoire of toppings. It might be easier to tell you what I don’t like: BBQ sauce on pizza; pineapple is a no-go for me! And I love both but not on pizza.
Yes, Pablo and his humans moved to Charlotte at the beginning of the year which is nice because it cut the drive time in half. 🙂
Agreed… pineapple and pizza together just isn’t right, and barbecue sauce isn’t so great either.
I do know how to put a dropped chain back on, but if my tire got a flat I would definitely have to do some YouTube research! Way to go on getting the workouts in while traveling.
I did run a race on Saturday! Great day for a race.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly Workouts – race week!
Can’t wait read your race recap!
You really didn’t miss a beat! You even did your virtual run with Kim (I was wondering why it looked so warm where you were in her photo collage.) Sounds like a really fun trip and exciting game!
It was a fun trip, even if a bit of a whirlwind. The game was great, but sadly we lost.
PABLO!!!!!!
What a week! We absolutely had a whirlwind trip last week, too. Sometimes those are the best!
So I love pizza that’s just cheese, or with mushrooms, olives, and onions. However, if I’m having “fancier” pizza, I like pepperoni cups and hot honey, or pears, red onion, and feta.

I know, isn’t Pablo the cutest!?
You go for much fancier pizzas than I. 😉
