Busy, Busy, Busy not Working Out
Last week may have been low on workouts, but it was filled with fun family time, lots of cooking, many miles (902 miles to be exact) in the car, and time spent Christmas decorating. As soon as we arrived at the farm on Monday I put up my mom’s Christmas tree and other decorations both inside and outside, and then on Tuesday, we celebrated an early Thanksgiving with a turkey breast and the works. On Thursday, we celebrated a second Thanksgiving with a turkey trot, a whole turkey and even more “works” at my son and daughter-in-law’s house, on Friday I volunteered to put up their Christmas tree and help decorate their house, and finally yesterday I put up our own Christmas tree. Decorating the house will have to be a work in progress that I hope to finish in a couple of days, but work is going to get in the way…
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 26 miles
• Average speed: 14.3 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 971 feet
• Start time: 10:27 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Clarks Gap loop
• Weather: 52° and sunny, climbing to 57°
• What I wore: bike shorts, l/s jersey, light jacket, ear warmer headband, and fingered gloves
Just as I was planning to head to the basement to workout on my spin bike (affiliate link), my husband said he was planning to ride outside. I hustled to get my gear together and joined him and I’m so glad I did – it was a gorgeous morning for a ride!
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 14:12 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:50 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: shorts and jog bra
Drive to the farm
Up early, I worked out and trained a couple of clients before heading to the farm for a few days.
Tuesday
There was no time for a dedicated workout, but I was plenty busy cooking a full Thanksgiving spread and decorating my mom’s house for Christmas.
Wednesday
Drive to Charlotte, NC
Thursday
Running: 4 miles
• Average pace: 9:23 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 140 feet
• Start time: 8:31 AM
• Location: Charlotte, NC
• Weather: 45° and sunny, climbing to 47°
• What I wore: capris, s/s t-shirt, nylon shell, ear warmer headband, visor, and gloves (took shell and gloves off about half way into the race)
Stretching: 10 minutes
Continuing with our family tradition of running in a turkey trot on Thanksgiving morning (even when we travel) I ran the Turkey Dash Charlotte 4-Miler with my son, daughter-in-law, and her brother. This year I sported my turkey capris (affiliate link) and new Thanksgiving themed t-shirt (affiliate link).
My d-i-l finished first and took pictures as the rest of us ran into the finish chute. I finished 3rd in my 60-69 year old age group. Finishing 1st and 2nd were younger women at 61 and 63, respectively; so had there been 5-year age groups… In lieu of age group awards, the race organizers made donations in our honor to a local charity, a wonderful gesture for Thanksgiving.
Stay tuned for a race recap on Tuesday.
And finally, I wasn’t alone celebrating turkey day with a workout as fitness blogging friends from around the world joined in for our annual Thanksgiving collage.
Friday
Walking: ¾ mile
• Average pace: 20:11 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 28 feet
• Start time: 5 PM
• Location: Ballantyne Bowl
• Weather: 54° with the sun setting
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, down vest
After a day of helping the kids decorate for Christmas and lounging on the sofa watching Elf, and with super stiff legs from the previous day’s turkey trot (like day after a marathon sore), I needed to get outside and move. We took Pablo for a walk around the Ballentyne Bowl which is scheduled to be completed in the spring. I wonder what he thinks of the artificial turf?
Saturday
Drive home from Charlotte
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions
- • If you celebrate Thanksgiving, did you travel? ~ We traveled to the farm for the first half of the week and to Charlotte for the second half.
- • Which workouts were your most enjoyable, toughest, and/or memorable? ~ Bill and I had a lot of fun on our Sunday bike ride (which seems like forever ago) and Thursday’s turkey trot was tough!
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ Yes, if you count it as a four day weekend!
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

What a fun week for you.
Love that you did a race. And with your family. A big bonus.
I did a trot. I always do if possible.
My hubbys family is not festive so not sure if I will tempt the cat with a tree.
Yay for running in a turkey trot! Can’t wait to read all about it since I now know Troy. 🙂 And yes, your kitty would love to climb a Christmas tree!
I was fortunate to have a 4-day weekend (my place of work has always given us Black Friday as a paid holiday). That said, my mind has been so confused as to what day it really is, LOL. Reality is gonna bite my buttocks tomorrow! Great job on the turkey trot! That’s a very nice gesture with the AG awards 😉
Yes, I love that the race organizers make a donation to charity rather than wasting that money on medals. 🙂
That’s funny- I also feel like Sunday was forever ago. Well, you had a busy week. You traveled, ran a race, and put up three Christmas trees! Our tree is up and I’m hoping to get the rest of the house decorated today (we’ll see…) The outdoor decs are definitely not going up till next weekend.
Congrats on your race! I love that in lieu of awards they made a donation. A much better use of funds!
Good luck with your decorating! I hope you enjoy it.
I hope your Christmas decorating went as planned! I opted to go on a bike ride and visit my other son and his family rather than decorate on Sunday. 😉 Yesterday was a busy work day, but today at 7:20 AM I’ve already trained my one and only client of the day so you know what I’ll spend the rest of my day doing!
Wow, what a busy week of travelling and family! Lovely that you got to see everyone.
Yay for a Turkey Trot with the family! I’m surprised that you felt it in your legs the next day – but I guess cycling and strength uses slightly different muscles than running.
10-year age groups are tough when you’re in the second half! Well done!!!
I was surprised that my legs took such a beating, too, but I guess it was because I ran the race so much faster than when training. I feel like I’ve gotten a little lazy with my running. Yes, I intentionally only ran one day a week over the spring and summer so I could cycle more, but during those runs I really took it easy. 😉
You were busy this week! Looks like a fun race and great finish photo. Look forward to your recap. Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks, Deborah!
Congratulations on your AG win! That’s amazing!
We did travel. It was kind of strange, because we didn’t cook, and instead went out to eat, but I didn’t hate it. I just wish we could have stayed in Charleston longer!
Thanks, although it was 3rd place, not a win. Looking forward to hearing all about Charleston since I’m familiar with the city after spending spring break there.
What a fun, busy Thanksgiving weekend for you! Congrats on the TT and the age group placement.
No traveling for me–unless you count our quick drive up to the lake. It was a normal work week for me and a busy Black Friday in the clinic. And no, we didn’t have any sales, lol.
Thanks, Wendy! LOL on not having a Black Friday sale at the clinic.
That is a lot of driving, decorating & cooking — the last 2 are workouts in themselves. You are just an energy bunny! Congrats on the AG award, too!
I have the opposite problem this morning — wanted to run before it started to rain but it started to rain early. There will still be plenty of mill time, I’m sure, so I’m trying to avoid that as long as possible, even though I don’t mind it.
Sound like a busy but fun week (although I know it was a lot of work).
Thanks, Judy! This Energizer Bunny is starting to lose a little battery power, though. 😉 Hope you got in your treadmill time!
What a busy and beautiful week!
Congrats on the podium.
A very beautiful finish photo, you look very fast with both the feet off the ground.
Thanks, Stefano! Yes, my daughter-in-law caught me just right and made me look very speedy. 🙂
Wow, that’s a busy week for sure. I love how you still managed to fit in some fitness activities here and there, and congrats on the good age group placement in the turkey trot!
I had a quite busy week but with some good sessions in the gym and at least a few good walks.
Thanks, Susanne!
That’s a lot of decorating! I’m sure everyone was very happy for your help. Good job on your turkey trot! Those turkey capris were the perfect touch.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly workouts – Very thankful!
Thanks, Lisa! I’ve had those turkey capris for a couple of years and while I would have been more comfortable in shorts, I let fashion trump function! 😉
