Wrapping Up 2023
Based on my Strava, I spend 495 hours, 12 minutes (or 20 days, 15 hours, 12 minutes) participating in my 4 favorite types of exercise during 2023…
- • Cycling – 3,415.7 miles in 247 hours, 56 minutes
- • Running – 142.6 miles in 24 hours, 5 minutes
- • Walking – 292.2 miles in 77 hours, 56 minutes
- • Strength training – 145 sessions in 150 hours, 15 minutes
When do I find time for this? Much of it is while other people are sleeping. An early bird, I’m up by 5 AM most days and in my gym for my own strength training session by 5:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before I start my workday at 6:30 AM. Most of my cycling and running happens on the weekends, or Tuesdays and Thursdays because I’m fortunate to work part-time and I keep those days light intentionally. I fit walking in whenever the time and mood allows.
For the upcoming year, I’ll try to keep doing the same. Here’s to a healthy and fit 2024!
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

Up early, we hit up Wegman’s before the crowds got too crazy – we’d gotten home from the farm the day before and I still had to shop for our our own feast. Later, after church and shopping, I hopped on my spin bike (affiliate link) to knock out a cardio workout. And then before spending the rest of the day cooking, I walked over to the nail salon to get two nails repaired that I’d chipped.
Once home, I spent that afternoon cooking, and then cooking some more. 😉
Monday
Rest and fun family day
Tuesday
Cycling: 30 miles

• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:06 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
A rainy and dreary day, I kept my cycling inside once again. I was bummed because it was relatively warm out and with only one early morning client I had plenty of time to ride.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 1-¾ mile in ~ 50 minutes
During the afternoon we watched our Virginia Tech Hokies win the Military Bowl in Annapolis, MD in the pouring rain, thankful we hadn’t bought tickets and were watching it from the comfort of our cozy basement family room.
Thursday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 11:16 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 151 feet
• Start time: 6:20 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 50° and mostly cloudy with full moon peeping through
• What I wore: shorts, s/s t-shirt, light shell, ear warmer headband, mittens, and visor (took shell off almost immediately)
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 15:12 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 59 feet
• Start time: 7:31 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 48°, mostly cloudy, and breezy
• What I wore: shorts, s/s t-shirt, and light shell, ear warmer headband, mittens, and visor
After getting up at my usual time and feeling absolutely fine, I started having stomach issues (if you get my drift) and couldn’t get outside to join Kim until 20 minutes into our scheduled virtual cardio workout. Yes, I risked going outside to run and did fine with only one trip back into the house for a potty break. It wasn’t until about an hour after getting back inside that chills and wave after wave of nausea hit me. I slept for over four hours and woke up with a headache and body aches. Tylenol fixed most of the achiness by the time I went to bed.
Friday
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Cycling: 10 miles
• Average speed: 11.7 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 476 feet
• Start time: 2:22 PM
• Location: neighborhood streets loop
• Weather: 51° and mostly cloudy
• What I wore: bike shorts, l/s jersey, jacket, earflap hat, and gloves
I woke up feeling 100% normal, but with no appetite and that lingered for most of the day. I played catch up on some of the things I’d hoped to do the previous day, but carved out enough time to go our for a short chill bike ride. BTW, are these bike socks I received for Christmas not perfect for me?
Saturday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Cycling: 12 miles
• Average speed: 13.0 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 551 feet
• Start time: 3:42 PM
• Location: neighborhood streets loop
• Weather: 49° (feels like 45°) and partly cloudy with a beautiful sunset
• What I wore: long bike pants, l/s jersey, jacket, earflap hat, and gloves
Up early to see Pablo and his humans off after having them visit for the week, I opted to skip going on a longer gravel ride with friends to rest my legs for my upcoming New Year’s Day race. After a day of non-stop laundry, writing thank you notes, and tidying up the house, I finally headed out for a shorter solo ride much later than planned and got to enjoy a beautiful sunset as I neared the end of my ride.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • What 2024 fitness goals have you set? ~ Once again, my goals are simply to maintain my current level of fitness and do my best to avoid injuries.
- • Have you seen any beautiful sunrises or sunsets recently? ~ Yes
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ No, but I have one tomorrow morning!
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Ugh on the 24 hour bug (which sounds a lot worse than the one I had a couple of weeks ago) — glad you bounced back so quickly!
Good luck on your race tomorrow & Happy New Year!
Love the socks. 🙂
Thanks, Judy! The race went well and I love my new socks, too. 😉
Sorry to hear you were sick but glad you had a quick turnaround. I’m trying my best to avoid catching all the things that are going around. I’m masking most of the time at work now.
No goals for 2024-like you, I just want to stay fit and healthy. I’ll just go with the flow and jump into things as they pop up. Good luck with your race tomorrow!
Thanks, Wendy! ‘Tis the season for nasty little viruses. Try to stay healthy around all those sick little kids.
Look how being sick improved your sleeping stats, Debbie!
I’m glad you’re feeling better – just in time for that New Year’s Day race tomorrow.
Those socks are perfect! Who gave them to you? Your husband?
Indeed! Having my two earliest clients away for the holidays certainly helped with my sleep. My body was happy with the extra rest.
My son and d-i-l gave me the socks. 🙂
I had a sore throat for a few days after our ski trip. Travel is tough on my body! Thankful it wasn’t COVID (as it has been in the past). My Strava cycling total is only 749 miles for 2023. I’m hoping to get a lot more next year, although since it’s all outdoor miles I guess that’s not terrible.
Happy New Year!
You’ll definitely want to ride more with those beautiful new bikes! Again, congrats!
Ugh on being sick, but glad you recovered quickly. My husband got over covid just in the nick of time and I thankfully didn’t catch it — yay SpikeVax!
I’m with you on the 5 am workouts — or at least the 5 am alarm — or 4:40 if I’m being ambitious or going to yoga. 😉 I am hooked on my morning workouts and love getting outside at the start of the day.
My #1 goal for 2024 is to rehab my hamstring ASAP!
I do hope you hit your 2024 goal of getting that hamstring rehabbed so you can get back to all of routines.
Ugh, sorry about the stomach bug, but glad it was short lived.
You have a well balanced approach to fitness and activity! Well done.
Thanks, Jessie!
I’m glad that nasty Thursday bug left the premises by the next morning. Talk about your unwelcome guests! I hope your NYD race went well, and you had a great start to 2024 😉
Thanks, Kim! Happy New Year!
Sorry to read you were sick.
A very good year of cross training. Well done!
Before my retirement I was an early bird too I ran and swam before going to work.
My only goal for 2024 is …. injury free!!!!
Thanks, Stefano, I’m felt fine by the next day. Staying injury free in 2024 is a great goal for all of us.
