The Perfect Snowstorm
I love snow and in the future if I could order up the perfect snowstorm, I’d request either Tuesday’s or Saturday’s and be quite happy. Both gave us beautiful snow covered trees and grass, but in both cases the roads stayed clear. Now that we’re on the downward slope of February, I’ve had my fill of winter and I’m ready for spring. One can dream…
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Rest day
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
Drove to Charlottesville and back
We will be watching Pablo for two weeks so we met him and his humans in Charlottesville for the exchange and lunch. Charlottesville is only a 2-hour drive for us, but a 4-hour drive for our son and d-i-l so we got the good end of the deal.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 3 miles
• Average pace: 14:41 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 91 feet
• Start time: 2:26 PM
• Location: neighborhood streets
• Weather: 48° and overcast with 100% humidity and occasional drizzle
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon jacket, gloves and mittens
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
After dropping my car off for an oil change I took a walk to kill time until it was ready for pickup.
Tuesday
Cycling: 12 miles
• Average speed: 16.5 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin

• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 6:29 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63°
• What I wore: bike shorts and tank
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
As daylight hit, I watched rain turn over to snow from the comfort of my basement spin bike.
Later while I was working, my husband took Pablo out for a walk in the snow. I couldn’t join them for a walk, but Pablo was just too cute in his rain vest not to share a picture.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
Thursday
Walking: 4 miles
• Average pace: 14:50 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 182 feet
• Start time: 6:04 AM
• Location: neighborhood streets
• Weather: 25° and clear
• What I wore: leggings, l/s shirt, fleece jacket, down coat, knit hat, and heated gloves
Cycling: 17 miles
• Average speed: 13.1 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird

• Start time: 12:10 PM

• Weather: 43° (feels like 35°) and sunny, climbing to 47° (feels like 42°)
• What I wore: fleece-lined bike pants, l/s jersey, coat, and fingered gloves
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
I learned during my virtual workout with Kim that if I dress appropriately, I can walk in 25° weather. Running, no problem, but walking? In the past I’d probably have skipped it, but now that I picked up a pair of long tights at Costco, started wearing my old down coat for walks, and have heated gloves, I feel invincible. HaHa!
In keeping with my riding outside at least once every week winter goal, Thursday was the only day I had a chunk of time open in the afternoon and luckily the weather cooperated. And once again, now that I have the appropriate winter cycling clothing and gear, I’ve been able to keep up with my goal.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
I also had physical therapy which included stretching, dry needling, and a few exercises. Some of the new stretches I’ve been doing are starting to mildly aggravate my previous injury resulting in light tingling in my right leg and foot so we modified my stretches. Still, things are looking up and I’m happy with the progress made so far.
Saturday
Walking: 3 miles
• Average pace: 14:36 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 110 feet
• Start time: 7:33 AM
• Location: neighborhood loop
• Weather: 32° (feels like 24°) and partly cloudy
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, nylon shell, down coat, ear warmer headband, and heated gloves
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
After a few warmish days, it snowed overnight leaving us with the perfect snow, pretty to look at on the trees and grass, but not sticking to the roads or trails. I wanted to take some pictures so I got out early for my walk before the snow melted.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • If you live where it snows, have you gotten much snow this year? ~ We missed our first snow while we were in Florida, but we’ve enjoyed three others that have moved out pretty quickly.
- • What are your weather limits for outdoor workouts? ~ I won’t workout outside during high wind or electrical storms.
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ no
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Well, you know I see plenty of the white stuff in Iowa, LOL! I prefer the fluffy stuff that coats the trees and grass, but melts upon hitting the streets…oh, and that’s WITHOUT wind! I know, pretty tall order.
You have too much of the white stuff in Iowa. At least this year has been a little better than usual with the exception of January. Wouldn’t it be nice to actually be able to order up perfect weather?
That photo collage is amazing!
So nice that you can have Pablo for two weeks. I guess he will be accompanying you on your walks?
What a great way of staying warm for a walk… I’ve said it before: I envy your heated gloves! If I ever get stuck in a cold weather climate, I will know what to shop for.
Thanks, Catrina! BTW, Pablo will be going to the farm with us next weekend. He’s going to love that!
OH gosh I love his vest! What a great pic of him enjoying the snow. How lovely you can help out when your kids travel!
Great week getting out there Deb! Such a great mix.
Thanks, Jessie! One of my clients gave that vest to Pablo when he first joined our family. Wasn’t that sweet?
I could deal with more snow if the roads stayed clear! We only have had one big snow this year and I am good with that… Pablo sure is a cutie! OMG I need those heated gloves. I have the worst time keeping my hands warm on my runs and my walks. I am glad your PT is going well!
I got my heated gloves at Costco for much cheaper than Amazon’s price. Maybe they still have them. It’s worth checking if you have a Costco nearby.
Pablo is so cute!
Being Swedish, I totally feel your pain at the end of the winter. Even in Ireland, I get tired of winter!
I’m not a fan of going out when it’s too cold but if it’s an otherwise nice sunny day and no ice, I’ll do it – I bought a pair of fleece lined leggings last winter and they’re great. Heated gloves sounds like something I should get for my husband, he can run in shorts but have almost frozen fingers!
I used to have a pair of fleeced lined running pants. They were really warm. I’m like your husband, I can run in shorts and be fine, but need to wear mittens over gloves to keep my fingers warm on that very same run. LOL
Pablo looks so stylish in his vest! I was actually going to buy Cocoa a coat this year, but it hasn’t been that cold.
We haven’t gotten much snow at all this year–I do like snow, but I’m also ok if we don’t have any. When it’s snowy, it really limits where I can run. God forbid! :p
My husband has been taking Pablo on 1-hour walks and considering it was snowing while they were out, we decided to put his “flannel lined rain repellent” vest on him. It sounds like it’s from LL Bean or Land’s End. LOL
I hear you on the snow getting in the way of our outdoor workouts. 😉
Pablo looks very happy!!!
So the PT stretches are for your back? Glad to hear you’re making progress! That snow does look pretty. No snow here, just a huge amount of rain this weekend.
Pablo is definitely having a fun week and we’re enjoying spoiling him! And yes, the PT stretches are for my back.
Pablo! He always looks so happy when he’s visiting! i love that sweet guy!
I won’t run in lightning, rain (I will stay out if it starts raining on me, but prefer not to go out in it), and hurricanes. Snow and ice really aren’t factors here.
Pablo is having a fantastic time! My husband has been taking him out on really long walks in the open field and woods near our house. He loves sniffing where so many other animals have been.
Pablo looks very happy to be staying with you! How fun! Overall we’re probably under our average snowfall for the year but there was a time in January when we had 20+ inches on the ground. I like this downward slope of February you speak of. I’m ready for spring as well!
I hope March doesn’t decide to throw a winter curveball our way.
Sorry if you get this x 3, it keeps failing to verify that I’m human.
Love your shoes matching with Kim’s outfit. The right clothes make all the difference, like my Central Park shenanigans on Saturday.
Pablo doesn’t look so sure about the snow!
Got it, and just once.
I hadn’t even noticed my shoes matched Kim’s outfit, but they sure do! I was slow on the learning curve when it came to dressing for winter walks. LOL
