One Neighbor’s Trash is Another Neighbor’s Treasure
If plogging is the Swedish slang word coined by Erik Ahlström for picking up trash while jogging, I wonder what picking up trash while walking might be called. Whatever it might be, I did some of it this past week for both selfish reasons and to keep our neighborhood from looking like a snowstorm hit after the first lawnmowers make their way through this spring.
During walks around my little neighborhood I’d noticed styrofoam peanuts (which were probably spilled from a box during garbage pickup) scattered in front of my neighbor’s house. As they say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” which was completely true in this case. I took a bag with me on one of my walks and gathered the peanuts for future use.
When I repot houseplants I use styrofoam peanuts instead of rocks in the bottom of pots under the dirt to improve drainage. It works just as well as rocks, but weighs much less. In recent years, though, items are rarely shipped in styrofoam peanuts and I had run out of my stocked supply so was thrilled with my haul!
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 26 miles

• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 9:54 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
I’m not gonna lie, I probably wouldn’t have ridden as far if I hadn’t seen the Strava 40K weekend cycling badge up for grabs. Even though I rode farther than the 24.8548 miles required, I didn’t earn the badge. It appears that manually added workouts don’t count toward Garmin challenges – my bike Garmin doesn’t work on my spin bike and my running Garmin doesn’t have an indoor biking feature. Oh well, the challenge worked because it gave me an incentive to ride longer.

• Start time: 4:06 PM

I had planned to run for a mile during my virtual workout with Kim, but woke up with a little bit of a spasm (which quickly went away once I did my PT stretches). Still, I chose to err on caution and keep my cardio workout low impact and walked instead.

Physical therapy stretches: every 3-6 hours
Drove to the farm
I took Pablo out for a quick walk before heading back out for my own workout. My husband has been taking Pablo for hour-long walks every morning, but wanted to get out for a bike ride before we left for the farm so I took over walking duty.
It snowed like crazy over an hour while we drove through the Shenandoah Valley, and even though the grass turned white, the highway stayed clear. Eventually, we drove out of the storm and by the time we got to the farm, the snow they’d gotten earlier in the day had mostly melted as well.
Pablo did great on the drive. I wonder, though, what he was thinking. I’m sure that he could tell by the tone of our voices that we were going somewhere fun.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Have you plogged? ~ yes, many times
- • Did you know that Thursday was National Margarita Day, and if so, did you celebrate? ~ It was also my husband’s birthday so I ordered a margarita while out celebrating his birthday.
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ no
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Oh no. I didn’t know about Margarita day but I had one last week.
No race but one last weekend.
Unofficial plogging… I hate when people litter.
Hope PT helps and your back continues to improve. And it warms up for bike rides.
FYI: I can’t comment from the link-up
Thanks for the heads up! I’ve got to figure out what’s going on with my blog and InLinkz, but I’m not sure where to start. 🙁
I’m all about plogging, though it’s been a few months since I’ve done the honors. That’s a great tip using the styrofoam peanuts! Barb & I were all about Margarita Day as well 🙂
When I think of plogging, I think of you! In fact, I may have first learned about it from you several years ago.
Glad you and Barb celebrated Bill’s birthday, I mean margarita day! 😉
That is a great use for the styrofoam peanuts! It is funny what badges will make us do, lol! Pablo is so cute, I know he enjoys those walks! We did celebrate National Margarita Day with a Hibiscus Margarita, very tasty!
I’ve not tried a hibiscus margarita. Sounds yummy!
Clever plogging!! I never thought of using Styrofoam like that, love the idea!
I bet your husband enjoyed taking Pablo on his walks in the morning.
Why didn’t you take Pablo with you when you walked the trails on Saturday? Looking at your pace, I guess he is too slow (or sniffs at too many corners, ha!)
As soon as Pablo did his business, he turned and wanted to go home. I think it was because I had him on the sidewalk, not the open fields behind our house. And you’re correct, he stops and sniffs EVERYTHING so we don’t really increase our heart rate or get much of a cardio workout when we take him out.
Wow, those styrofoam peanuts really were a find! I agree, you don’t get them much in packages anymore.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone being as dedicated to the PT work as you are! But I know- pain is a powerful motivator. Glad everything is feeling good. And- you got some good sleep this week!
Those PT stretches only take me about 3 minutes so I consider it time well spent for the benefits, both long and short term.
Ha, I’ve heard of plogging but never tried it. Glad you were able to walogg (?) and get use out of the peanuts. Nice job staying active and meeting most of your goals. I’m impressed with how many steps you get in, even on days without running!
Walogging – I like that! I’m very active with my clients so I’m moving around all day and get in a lot of steps with them.
I’ve never plogged but I have definitely thought about it when I’m on my trails. The amount of poop bags makes me crazy! Why people don’t just let their dogs poop in the woods OR pick up the poop bags and carry them out makes me crazy. Today I saw a plastic cocktail glass in the woods. My mind wanders and I wondered who would carry one of those into the woods. One time I saw a diaper!
Picking up your dog’s poop in a bag and then leaving the bag behind? Why would someone do that? Like you said, just let your dog poop in nature like the other animals if you can’t/won’t carry the plastic bag back out with you.
I noticed that the recent windy weather has brought quite a bit of trash that must have blown away from trash pickup day. It looks pretty bad. If the park system doesn’t pick it up I might get out there and clean it up!
That’s a great idea about the styrofoam peanuts. I used empty soda cans!

Using empty soda cans for large outdoor planters is genius. Thanks for the tip!
That’s great how you can use the Styrofoam peanuts! Very clever. I’m not big on plogging but tyat’s mostly because I don’t want to carry things around when I’m out walking (other than my camera). But I hate litter and it’s a huge problem here. Either it’s something with people unwilling to pay for waste collection or it’s stuff that has blown away (it’s a windy area).
What a bummer about the cycling badge! I know it’s the actual workout that counts.. but I like getting those little badges myself!
I know how heavy camera equipment can be from trying to pick up my husband’s backpack when he has multiple lenses in it. The weight of all that glass adds up!
This is the one reason why I decided to switch to mirrorless cameras a number of years ago. I started on Canon DSLR, then bought a Panasonic mirrorless, now I use Olympus which is a bit heavier than the Panasonic but a great camera and still MUCH lighter than standard DSLRs. And my lenses are super tiny! For now I’ve decided that I don’t need any of the fancy pro lenses. But it also means that I only have a small waist bag with me so no room for rubbish.
My husband just got a Fujifilm mirrorless camera that’s small enough that he can put it in his bike jersey back pocket. I guess it’s not as heavy either since it’s mirrorless – I didn’t really think about that until I read your reply. 🙂
I have absolutely plogged! It’s so great and I love that you are able to make use of the trash you collected.
I did know it was national margarita day, but i didn’t partake this year. This was kind of a hectic week and it didn’t work out this time around. Boo. Happy birthday to you husband!
No race this weekend, but Saturday… It’s happening!
