In My Happy Place
Gardening was the theme of the week, or at least in my spare time and when it wasn’t raining. This time of year keeps me busy with spring cleanup before my lawn guy comes to spread mulch. I find working outside with my flowers and plants to be very therapeutic and look forward to it.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 40 miles
• Average speed: 13.2 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: gravel
• Elevation gain: 2,434 feet
• Start time: 9:56 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail to Thomas Mill/Canby/Diggs Valley loop
• Weather: 59° and sunny, climbing to 63° and overcast
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm warmers, jacket, and fingerless gloves (took jacket off after 8 miles)
Physical therapy stretches: every 3-6 hours
After way too long I got out with the Gravel Rats for a fantastic group ride. Unlike the VeloPigs, they ride year round on Saturdays and Sundays, but it has never seemed to work out for me to join them since the fall.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 3 miles
• Average pace: 15:18 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 140 feet
• Start time: 8:47 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 52° and partly cloudy, climbing to 58°
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, ear warmer headband, and gloves
Gardening: 2 hours
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
It was a beautiful afternoon, so after work I got outside to clean up my perennial garden. It was great to get back in my gardens even if I had to be super careful not to aggravate my back – I wear knee pads and walk on my knees rather than bending over.
Tuesday
Cycling: 30 miles
• Average speed: 11.7 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,558 feet
• Start time: 9:49 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail to Thomas Mill and Woodburn loop
• Weather: 52° and raining, climbing to 56° and overcast
• What I wore: bike pants, l/s jersey, rain jacket, and fingered gloves
Gardening: 2 hours
Physical therapy stretches: every 3-6 hour
I waited until it stopped raining to start my ride, but by the time I got all of my gear on and rode my bike out of the garage it had started raining again. Fortunately, the rain stopped 30 minutes into my ride and didn’t return. I added both Thomas Mill and Woodburn back into my hill work routine for the first time this season. It felt great to work on climbing again and even better to be flying back down!
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Physical therapy stretches: every 3-4 hours
Thursday
Walking: 4 miles
• Average pace: 15:29 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 192 feet
• Start time: 5:59 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 52° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, down vest, ear warmer headband, visor, and gloves
Cycling: 27 miles
• Average speed: 13.2 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 948 feet
• Start time: 9:19 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Clarks Gap loop
• Weather: 56° and cloudy, climbing to 63° and sunny
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, jacket, and fingered gloves
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours, plus 1-hour of physical therapy
Luckily, the rain stopped not long before I planned to step outside for my weekly virtual cardio workout with Kim. With plans to ride outside later in the morning, I chose walking over staying inside on my spin bike.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Gardening: 2.5 hours
Physical therapy stretches: every 3 hours
I had hoped to go for a walk, but my todo list was 13 items long and I just ran out of time – 12 out of 13 items checked off isn’t too bad, though. 😉
Saturday
Walking: 3 miles
• Average pace: 14:38 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 9:26 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 65° (42° and raining outside)
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Cycling: 6 miles
• Average speed: 15.8 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 10:21 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 65° (43° and raining outside)
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Physical therapy stretches: every 3-6 hours
For the second Saturday in a row it was cold and rainy outside so I was stuck inside our basement on my treadmill and spin bike. I walked first and by the time I got on the bike, my legs were shot so I kept it really short.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Do you have spring flowers popping up? ~ I’ve only seen daffodils, hyacinths, and snowdrops so far.
- • Do you mind switching to Daylight Saving Time? ~ I don’t mind it at all. I love the extra hour of sunlight in the evening and enjoy my pleasant walks or runs pre-dawn where I can bring up the sun.
- • Did you run in race this weekend? ~ no
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Wow, you really got a lot of cycling miles in this week! Are you training for something?
No flowers yet–I’m anxiously awaiting my chives! I’m not a fan of the time change either way. I’m heading home from California today and with the two hour time difference plus the time change, I’m going to have to adjust to a 3 hour time difference. Yikes!
Yes, I’m training for two bike races! One is in May (a 100-mile gravel grinder) and the other is in July, a 50-mile ride up WV’s highest peak on gravel, rocks, and even some grass.
Oh dear, adjusting to time zone changes plus DST hour difference sounds awful.
As you know, I’m horribly envious of all that outdoor biking! My spin bike is driving my nutzo, but I’m grateful I do have it as an option. We finally have some signs of bulbs beginning to emerge from the ground. No signs of blooming for awhile, but things are in motion 😉
Yes, I’m well aware! 😉 Today, I was stuck inside to do my long ride because of ridiculously crazy wind and dangerous high wind gusts (up to 55 MPH). Boo!
Are you planning to dig up any of your bulbs to take with you to your new place?
Nice job on the biking and well done on your daily steps, too!
I thought of you today because today we had the world’s largest timed bike race here in Cape Town. 35’000 participants for a 109km long route around the peninsula. It’s spectacular – you would have enjoyed it.
I think I’m going to participate next year!
OMG, that’s so exciting that you’re thinking of participating in next year’s bike race! I’ll look forward to following along on your training!
Sounds like you had a great week- the training is going well! To answer your question- grr. Not a fan of turning the clocks ahead. I fail to see how getting up and driving to school in the pitch dark is a good thing, but oh well. I will survive it!
Outdoor therapy is the best. I was able to get out for two walks this week, and it felt SO GOOD after being stuck in the gym.
So happy to hear you’ve healed well enough to get back outside with walking.
No flowers yet… too cold. Hopefully this week is milder and drier.
I am looking forward to gardening but here it’s not until June.
No race until March 17.
Good luck on your race next weekend!
How lovely to get started with gardening!! I can’t wait! Here it’s still too cold but plants don’t care, there’s plenty of buds and new leaves on my roses. So there are definitely spring signs, just not in the outdoor temperature.
You’re amazing with your cycling distances! I hope to get back to the indoor cycling but for the moment I’m busy with Bulgarian squats and my legs also think it’s enough. 🙂
My gardening amounted to cleaning out the last of the leaves from the gardens, cutting back last year’s liriope growth, and weeding. I’m just seeing my peonies popping up through the ground, but not much else.
Bulgarian split squats are plenty for the moment. Just think how strong and stable your legs are getting.
We had some flowers bloom this week – the daffodils were here when we hit 60 and 70 degrees! And then it snowed this morning a few inches, so I don’t know what’s going to happen to all those blooms 🙁 We did not start gardening here yet – thank goodness because it’s still snowing and frosting here.
Your daffodils should be fine. They’re quite hardy.
That’s a lot of cycling! It’s great that it doesn’t aggrevate your back.
My garden is my happy place too! I can’t wait to dig in – pun intended 😉 It’s still too cold here for nything to be popping up yet, but I can’t wait to see some spring flowers!
Happy gardening!
You racked up the miles cycling this week! We have flowers here! Tulips and daffodils are blooming. I am so ready to start planting but no we will have another frost. I am planting our garden seeds this week and hoping for a better harvest than last year!
I won’t be planting anything anytime soon (here in NOVA I wait until the late April/beginning of May), but it was time to cut back Liriope, fertilize the foundation plants, etc.
Looks like gorgeous weather this week!
You were gardening, while I was painting and organizing! Super fun!
I don’t mind the change either. It takes a few days for me to get myself in order, but I like the longer days well enough.
The next few days the weather is supposed to be amazing! 🙂
Isn’t it great getting things organized and refreshed?
I just took a pic of some crocus blooming in our front yard! I am jelly you’ve been able to work out in the garden. That probably won’t happen for a bit yet here. Great job on all the cycling miles this week!
Gardening is going to be hit or miss here for the next several weeks. After a few gorgeous days, the weather is turning cold again. 🙁
We do have a few spring bulbs popping up, but not many. I have mostly late season blooming tulips so it will be a bit until I see them. It looks like your cycling is going quite well. Good job!!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly Workouts – spring into training
Thanks, Lisa!
So much cycling! You’ll be ready for your races for sure. Looks like spring weather is there for you! How lovely.
Spring has been put on hold for a few days here, but I guess fluctuating temperature is a part of spring. 😉
