A Mini Road Trip
As if a 21-day road trip wasn’t enough time in the car, my husband and I took a whirlwind trip to the farm to see my mom. It rained most of the time we were there so I was happy to get out for at least one walk.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

After sitting in the car for six hours, I was ready to get outside for some exercise to loosen up my stiff body.

My husband and I were up early for the drive back home, and once again after sitting in the car for six hours I need to move! The weather was delightful, so after unpacking, I hopped on my bike to climb some hills. It was the first time climbing my two favorite hills since July 2nd and my legs felt it after riding on mostly flat terrain while on our trip.
On the way home, I stopped by the bike shop to see if my handlebars could be raised slightly because I felt more slammed on my gravel bike than on my road bike. Even though I overheard them giving out dates of September 17 before bikes could be finished, my favorite mechanic took a look at my bike and made a few adjustments on the spot. He even pointed out that my seat was back a tad bit too far and adjusted it. The bike feels so much more comfortable!
While stopped at the shop mid-ride for about an hour, I held my Garmin while Oscar worked on my bike. After finishing the ride, Garmin said I’d averaged 9.5 MPH, but it showed up on Strava as 12.7 which is what I thought it should be. I guess Garmin calculated my mileage on total time, not riding time even though it normally doesn’t do that.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 3.03 miles
• Average pace: 15:20 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 142 feet
• Start time: 3:44 PM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 73° and mostly sunny with 40% humidity
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
The weather was absolutely perfect and even though I didn’t take a picture, the walk really did happen. 😉
Thursday
Walking: 4.29 miles
• Average pace: 15:20 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 98 feet
• Start time: 5:31 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 55° and clear
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, light jacket, visor, and gloves
Cycling: 36.12 miles
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Average speed: 12.9 MPH
• Surface: gravel and paved
• Elevation gain: 1,745 feet
• Start time: 10:46 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Hamilton loop with Thomas Mill to Diggs Valley
• Weather: 72° and sunny, climbing to 79° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
I was up early and out the door for Kim‘s and my weekly virtual cardio workout. She stayed inside on her spin bike while I donned gloves for the cooler temps outside. Yes, it’s that time of year where I’ll be wearing gloves to keep my fingers from turning into icicles pretty much between now and late April. LOL
I waited until it warmed up a bit before heading out for a ride with my husband. We decided to hit up some gravel and stopped for a picture with the paved to gravel sign that has a bunch of VeloPigs stickers on it.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
I woke up to a special visitor! Pablo and his humans had arrived around 11 PM, but I was fast asleep and didn’t hear them.
Saturday
Walking: 4.05 miles
• Average pace: 15:28 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 169 feet
• Start time: 7:12 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 61° and mostly cloudy, climbing to 67°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor (gloves for the first mile)
With a busy weekend of family time ahead, I got out for a walk before the fun began.

So good that you are a special customer at your bike shop!
Yay for Oscar – I think he deserves a home-made pie or something. 🙂
Sitting in a car for hours is my worst nightmare, I get really grumpy. So to make it easier, I usually go for a run beforehand just to make myself tired. It helps a bit, but I’m still not in the best mood 🙂
We love that bike shop! The guys that work there are so nice. Oscar had just rebuilt my husband’s Salsa Cutthroat (the orange one he took with him on our road trip) and another mechanic (who has since quit working there) gave my Salsa Warbird (the pink bike) a complete tuneup in February and surprised me with bright pink valve stems. 🙂
Exercise definitely helps before sitting in a car for a long time.
