Waning Days of Fall
I tried to get outside as much as possible this past week because I suspect the weather isn’t going to stay this nice much longer. I made it out every day except for Friday when we got snow flurries during the morning before it turned to rain in the afternoon.
The farm got about a half inch of snow late Thursday afternoon which had all melted by noon on Saturday. With an elevation of over 2,000 feet higher than where we live, the farm regularly gets more snow.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Hiking: 3.13 miles
• Average pace: 18.31 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 149 feet
• Start time: 12:52 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails and side trails
• Weather: 58° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, jacket, and visor
It was National Hiking Day so I got out for a hike. I won’t lie, I was hoping for a badge from Garmin, but apparently NHD isn’t on their radar.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Cycling: 42.31 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 14.1 MPH
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,450 feet
• Start time: 12:41 PM
• Location: W&OD Trail Sterling/Hamilton loop
• Weather: 69°, mostly sunny, and breezy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, and fingerless gloves
My husband and I took advantage of the fantastic weather, especially for mid-November, with a longer ride. I often see a flock of chickens eating along the trail just west of Leesburg. Usually they ignore me, but occasionally they’ll flap their wings and run in every direction if I startle them. Needless to say I was cautious when I had to scoot between them and a walker as I followed my husband out the trail. No sure what to say, I shouted, “On your left, and chickens, on your right.” Hopefully, I made the man smile as I rode by.
Tuesday
Cycling: 30.27 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 14.4 MPH
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 978 feet
• Start time: 11:44 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Reston loop
• Weather: 59° and mostly cloudy with a light drizzle the last mile
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, jacket, and fingerless gloves over nitrile gloves
What a difference a day makes! Ten degrees cooler and with the sun covered by clouds, I was chilly for the first half of our ride. I was surprised when I got a gale watch notification on my Garmin during the ride; although, the impending storm wasn’t forecast to roll in for about 36 hours.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 4.09 miles
• Average pace: 15:12 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 206 feet
• Start time: 3.10 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 65° mostly cloudy, dropping to 63°
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, and visor
With pretty ugly weather in the forecast, I got out for a longer walk, surmising that if I was stuck on my treadmill the following day, I’d rather be on it for a shorter walk.
Thursday
Walking: 4.28 miles
• Average pace: 15.22 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 195 feet
• Start time: 5:32 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 41° and clear, dropping to 39°
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, puffer jacket, ear warmer headband, and gloves with mittens on top (took mittens off after two miles)
So much for panicking and going on a longer walk the previous day since I thought I’d be stuck inside on either my treadmill or spin bike due to the impending storm. Well, the storm blew through in about three hours the previous evening and I awoke to a clear sky. Kim wasn’t so lucky, though, and had to stay in her garage on her treadmill.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Cycling: 12 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.3 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:36 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 64°
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
Walking: 2.14 miles
• Average pace: 14.35 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 83 feet
• Start time: 8:54 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 48°, mostly sunny, and windy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, and visor
After a ride on my spin bike, I ventured outside into the wind for a walk.
