~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…
It’s time again to join in on the fun and clear my conscience of recent running, biking, fitness, nutrition, and life in general faux pas. I know I’ll feel better when I’m done, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll give you a laugh or two in the process!
I walkfess/bikefess: I recently moved several of my tank tops down to the basement storage room. It’s too cold to wear a tank when going out on walks, but I have been slipping one on for indoor spinning and walking on the treadmill pictures (no one wants to see me in my sports bra). Anyway, for the rest of the winter, my tanks are conveniently located right next to my cardio equipment.
I bikefess: I have a pair of long Specialized bike pants with a really big seat area designed to fit over padded bike underwear. Even though I have padded bike underwear, I never though to wear them underneath, instead wearing the long pants over bike shorts. I wore them all of last winter and they were uncomfortable because I was using them incorrectly. Duh!
I bikefess: I developed a hotspot on my upper left leg on the last few days of our ride across Florida in January. It came back several times over the year especially after riding longer distances on particularly hot and humid days and I was terrified it would develop into a full blown saddle sore.
It wasn’t until a week ago that I realized that I was applying the Chamois Butt’r too far forward on my bike shorts’ chamois. Once I started applying it farther back on the chamois, I noticed I was experiencing a lot less friction and was a lot more comfortable. Duh!
I bikefess: I learned during a recent ride that bike math is just as difficult as marathon math when calculating mileage in your head. The W&OD Trail loop I set out to ride was 44 miles so I decided to throw in an additional short out-and-back to get to the 50 miles on my training schedule. Sadly, I calculated wrong and my 50-mile ride ended up being 54 miles.
And finally, I runfess/walkfess/bikefess that I have cold induced asthma and was recently prescribed an inhaler; however, I keep forgetting to use it before heading outside to exercise on freezing cold days. As a result, I wheeze for the first ten minutes or so until I warm up.
There you have it, my most recent fessions; and you can bet that it feels good to get another set off of my chest! See you soon in the runfessional.

Oh, the endless quest for bike shorts perfection!
Once, I thought I’d outsmart the system by wearing padded bike underwear under my padded bike shorts—because double the padding surely means double the comfort, right?
It doesn’t. It had me shifting uncomfortably in the saddle the whole way!
Oh wow, that’s good information to have – I’ve thought of doing the same, but have never tried it. Now I won’t!
I bikefess that I often wear my padded “bike” underwear under regular bike-styled shorts (that aren’t padded). But I usually wear “civilian” underwear as well, LOL. The chamois thing really creeps me out. True story!!!
LOL, I didn’t know that about the chamois creeping you out. Wearing padded underwear under regular bike style un-padded shorts makes total sense, though.
When I did ride my stationary bike, I did wear those padded shorts (actually skirt).
I don’t have asthma but boy, am I out of breath when I run in the cold.
So far this winter has been NO FUN!!
I “think” when I first started riding again in 2017 that I didn’t wear padded shorts – I can’t even imagine doing that now! By 2018 or 19 I bought my first pair of padded shorts and have relied on them since.
I bike fess that I need to try padded shorts – I have a padded seat but hadn’t thought about trying padded shorts…duh! LOL
LOL, you sound like me sometimes overlooking the obvious. Hope padded shorts work well for you!
