It’s time to sit down once again with a beverage of your choice and chat – I’ll remind you that I don’t like coffee or tea so my drink of choice today will be water. Let’s chat about things other than just running, cycling, strength training, yoga, and complaining about our most recent injuries. Sound good? I’ll go first…
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that I had to replace my water bottle after the seal broke. Its design wasn’t the best with an exposed seal that attracted mold. It took some time, but I found this Owala water bottle that doesn’t have the same type of rubber gasket. Its design allows for using a straw or not and it even has a little carrying loop on the top.
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that my monthly stats didn’t pan out as I’d expected, but I did as much as I could considering I didn’t have a ruptured appendix and 6-day stay in the hospital on my 2025 BINGO card.
The month started off strong while in Florida, but I got sick three days after arriving home and my workouts suffered for the rest of the month. I’ve divided walking into three lines, outdoor walks by miles, and then my indoor hospital and home laps by hours and minutes.
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that at the beginning of the year I cut back on my caffeine intake. For years I’d enjoyed one Zipfizz over the course of the morning, but at the beginning of the year I cut it back to half a drink per day in an effort to cut back on caffeine. Not a coffee or tea drinker and no longer a soda drinker it was my only source of caffeine. Each Zipfizz contains 100 mg of caffeine (a cup of coffee has 95 mg) so I wasn’t getting an outrageous amount, but still as I age, I knew cutting back would be a good thing.
While in the hospital I didn’t miss the caffeine at all so I’ve completely cut Zipfizz out of my morning routine. Come summer I’ll probably add a sports drink (like Gatorade) to one of my bottles when cycling, but otherwise I’m just a boring water-drinking girl with the occasional orange juice. And of course I’ll continue to enjoy a celebratory margarita now and then. 😉
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that I’m shocked at the amount of sleep I’ve needed since surgery. My goal for the past few years has been 7 hours per night, according to my Fitbit (Fitbit subtracts out restless sleep and any time I wake up during the night). Since surgery I’ve needed 8-9 nightly hours or else I fall apart during the day, and even with a good night’s sleep, I still need an afternoon nap. I hope as I rebound this changes because I don’t like how needing so much sleep makes me feel.

Today I’m joining Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner and Coco at Running With Perseverance for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date linkup which goes live the first Friday of every month. Be sure to stop by their blogs for a cup of coffee and to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the other bloggers who are participating in the linkup.
- Questions:
- • Are you a coffee or tea drinker? If not, do you have another favorite morning drink?
- • On average, how much sleep do you need per night? ~ Seven hours used to do it, but now I’m needing much more.
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

Just last week, I was telling my dad that if I ever ended up in the hospital, I’d have to bring my own kettle. There’s no way the staff could keep up with my bottomless tea habit.
It’s great that you’ve been able to cut back on caffeine!
Have you thought about trying electrolyte tablets that you just swallow with water instead of Gatorade? They might be a handy alternative!
Thanks for the electrolyte tablets tip, Catrina. I’ll look into them.
I love my morning coffee, but then I just drink water the rest of the day.
It sounds like your body is still recovering, and its great that you are able to give it the sleep it needs. I think I need 7-8 hours sleep, but barely get 7 most nights.
I don’t think one coffee a day is bad. For me, though, the older I got the more I noticed caffeine affected me. If I had a doctor’s appointment in the morning, my BP would be on the high end of normal to even slightly high, but if it was checked in the afternoon it was always fantastic.
Wow- good thing your appendix held off rupturing until you finished your Florida trip! I think your increased sleep need is temporary- you’re still healing from surgery. And, to answer your question, I drink many cups of (caffeinated) tea a day, and no one is going to prise that mug out of my hand!!!
We’ve commented many times on how lucky I was with when this happened and not just a few days earlier while still in Florida (or this summer while out west).
Those unexpected medical situations are never fun! Sounds like you are handling recovery like a pro and I am sure you will be back to your self soon. It’s absolutely normal that your body needs more sleep and recovery. Be kind to yourself!
Thanks, Deborah!
I do love my coffee but just one cup in the morning.
I’d like 8 hours but often it’s very disruptive.
Do you find the older you get, the more trouble you have getting a solid night’s sleep? I get up 2-3 times per night to go to the bathroom. Ugh!
The appendix is just so scary when it decides to go. I’m so glad you’re ok. Healing up from that kind of things requires tons of sleep. Get it all in.
I am actually drinking more water, but I hate it and all I do is go to the bathroom.
Keep drinking that water, Jenn! It’s so good for you.
I’m glad you’re honoring your recovering body with the rest (and sleep) it’s been needing. Just a bummer all the medical stuff had to rear its ugly head and initiate so much distress.. As you know, my sleep is meek and bleak. I have been noticing more fatigue in recent weeks (months?). My crazy work schedule (and time commuting in the car) seems to be catching up with me.
Thanks, Kim! Your work schedule and commute are out of control.
Omg I’m so sorry to hear about the ruptured appendix! I’m glad you are recovering well. I too aim for 7 hours of sleep per night, but you’re right the actual quality of that sleep can vary. I don’t think I knew ZipFizz had caffeine…I haven’t had it in years.
Thanks, Marcia!
I’m more of a tea drinker and used to live on 5hrs/night but have increased to 6-7 in years past.
I’m so sorry to hear about your appendix/hospitalization! 🙁 It sounds like the needing extra right now is likely related to your body just trying to heal/recover… I hope you feel completely better soon!
Thanks, Farrah!
I tried cutting out coffee at one point, but didn’t last long lol! I love my morning coffee but have cut out any caffeine the rest of the day.
I’m not surprised you find yourself sleeping more – I’ve been the same way since my surgery. Makes me feel a little sluggish but I guess that’s part of the healing process. Hang in there!
Thanks, Michelle! I’m working on sleeping more. You do the same!
