With full intentions to enjoy my family during the holiday week, I wrote out my blog posts last Monday and Tuesday morning, scheduled them to post on Wednesday and Friday, and then set my laptop aside for much of the week. I sneaked in some comment replies, and popped over to a few other blogs to see what else was going on in the running world, but other than that I stayed pretty focused on my family and friends – and cooking…
I fit in Monday and Wednesday’s strength training sessions with no problem, working out between clients; however, I skipped my Tuesday run with the girls since I was still experiencing some sciatic nerve pain in my calf.
Wednesday was filled with social activities… and lots of food. The Cruisers and I met for lunch at a favorite local fish shack, and were even seated on the patio (with the plastic walls rolled most of the way down. I had shrimp tacos and Bill had a lobstah salad, and I might have had a margarita with lunch, too. And yes, I survived the stress of lunch out with friends just two days before Christmas despite my earlier concerns!
Wednesday evening found us heading out for our first ever book night before Christmas. We usually go between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but with Joseph heading back to Chicago yesterday, we squeezed it in early this year. Contrary to our concerns that traffic around the mall would be horrendous just two evening before Christmas, we managed to get in and out of Barnes and Noble without a hitch. After shopping for books we headed back to Reston Town Center and had a delicious dinner at Il Fornaio. The rain held out and we were able to walk to Fountain Square for pictures in front of both the Christmas tree and the fountain.
I spent most of the day on Thursday cooking and baking, and wrapped up just in time to help Daniel make a new pasta dish he’s been wanting to try. Even though Daniel lives only about twenty miles away, he packed his bags and spent Wednesday through Saturday with us. This momma was happy! With Joseph and Julie home from Chicago for the week, they split their time between our house and Julie’s parents’ house; so I should say that this momma was triply happy.
After Christmas Eve mass, we enjoyed our usual family time complete with our traditional Christmas drink, toasted almonds; and this year, Bill added Mexican margaritas. Daniel’s college roommate joined us, and then another college friend stopped by, and then a high school friend, and before we knew it we had a party going on! Our last guest left at 1:30 AM, and on their way out, they bumped into Santa Claus coming in.
Christmas day was wonderful with family time with both our own little family, and Julie’s family. Before I knew it, a month of planning and preparation was behind me, the day had come and gone, and I had failed to take a single picture…
Saturday morning six Cruisers met at 8 AM for an easy run (after the first mile, Alan took off and missed the picture). I’m loving the later start time during the winter, but come summer I’ll probably meet my MRTT friends for their earlier start time, or convince the Cruisers to get up earlier.
This was my first run in eight days, and I was thrilled to run pretty much pain free. We set out for six miles, but listening to my body, I stopped after five miles. Later Saturday morning, I lifted weights, fitting in my final session of the week.
Saturday afternoon we headed out to the grocery store for snacks and drinks for our football double-header evening, but first we hit up a new-to-me restaurant that Bill recently discovered. Not a fan of sushi, I’ve skipped his recent trips, but decided to tag along this time. Low and behold, they serve hibachi grilled dishes, so I got shrimp and scallops. Oh my goodness were they delicious and light!
My hibachi dish was nowhere as artsy and photogenic as the sushi dishes, though. Here are pictures of Julie’s and Bill’s. Joseph’s was pretty cool as well, but I didn’t get a picture.
Saturday evening we enjoyed watching our Hokies win one last final game for our beloved coach, Frank Beamer, before he retires. The Hokies made it to Beamer’s 23rd straight bowl game, the Independence Bowl; and after an incredibly high scoring game, and stressful final three minutes, I snapped a picture of our TV when Frank got ice dumped on him after his final win as the Hokies head coach.
We have high hopes for our new Virginia Tech football coach, but for now, I’m happy to not look ahead, and honor Coach Beamer.
While the Hokie were still playing, the Redskins kicked off for a game that could cinch the NFC East for them if they won. Being a Redskins fan can be quite stressful, but this year it’s been fun watching them pull things together. Saturday was actually a great day to be a DC sports fan with the Redskins, Caps, and Wizards all three winning!
Bill and I spent Sunday afternoon hanging our basement TV and switching out all of our media components from our old TV stand to the new one. Last week I found a TV console for a steal on a local Facebook group version of Craig’s List. It’s pretty much exactly what I had in my head that I wanted, so I was thrilled to find it used, and in excellent condition. I may not have gone for a run, but I worked up a sweat helping Bill get everything in order!
A Sunday afternoon and evening spent working on a big house project resulted in not getting this weekly recap finished until late on Monday, but it is what it is… Happy Monday evening, ya’ll!

- Questions:
- What are your New Year’s Eve plans?
- How difficult is it for you to listen to your body?
- Did you race this weekend? Were there even any races?
How great that both your kind SS were home staying with you! I hope mine will do that too some day. We’ve been on vacation all week and I am starting to miss my regular schedule. Good for you for listening to your body. I am not always so good at that !

Hope you’re having fun on vacation!
It sounds like you had a lovely holiday time. Lots of fun, good food, and family 🙂
Last week was a tough running week weather wise so may be weight lifting was the way to go! I am glad you are feeling better. The aches and pains are bothersome but it sounds like you have been resting a bunch, hopefully that will cure it.

Yes, with all of the rain we had I feel like I “picked” a good week to rest my back.
Happy New Year!
Yay for a pain free run! Isn’t it crazy how we spend so much time preparing for the holiday and then it’s over just like that!
PS. I like your trees beside your tv!
I know, and for us, this year especially with moving our book night to before Christmas. Since Book Night is part of our Christmas gift to our sons, it normally extends the holiday a bit. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, too! Happy New Year!
I don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but the larger tree on the right is a Virginia Tech tree (my hubby, oldest son, daughter-in-law, and I are all Hokies), and the tree on the left is a West Virginia University tree (our youngest son is a Mountaineer). We’re showing our alma mater love!
It is so hard for me to listen to my body and not push it! I am getting better about it, but….baby steps.
This NYE my husband and I are staying in. I’m making a roast for sandwiches, and a shrimp salsa dip. I’m going to try to keep my 4 year old up for as long as she’ll hold out so she can “celebrate” with us too – games, puzzles, and dancing will all be on the itinerary. Happy New Years to you!

Your New Year’s Eve sounds perfect, and similar to ours when the kids were little. These days it centers around college football bowl games and then we switch over about twenty minutes before the ball drops to watch the final festivities on TV. This year we’ll be watching for the star to rise in Chicago for the first time, plus Joseph and Julie will be there!
Amen on a pain-free run! Looks like the extra time did you well Debbie! I can not imagine trying to get in and out in your city. I thought my little city was about all I could handle right before Christmas. We had hibachi last night I always eat too much rice but other than that I do pretty well. My husband and I share a plate and we always get the choose 3. Chicken, Filet and Shrimp. It took me awhile to try it but now I love it! Aren’t those FB buy sell and trade pages awesome? You got a great piece too! Looks brand new! I got in my training run but I did hear of some Christmas light runs, I think that would be neat! Enjoy your week, we’re headed back down to New Orleans for NYE festivities and also go to the Sugar Bowl the next day!

How cool that you’re going to the Sugar Bowl – have fun! Who will you be cheering for Ole Miss or Oklahoma State?
It sounds like you had a very Merry Christmas! Good for you with listening to your body!! So glad you had a pain free run too…Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you, too!
I too did not take one single picture Christmas day, but I did manage to get some video. It’s so chaotic (and fun) when everyone is here and I forget. We always watch our old Christmas videos during the holidays and have a lot of laughs. The decorations are still up so I can still takes pics. As for listening to your body — well I almost wish I didn’t have such a high threshold of pain. I hope your calf is better very soon! Thanks for linking Deb and Happy New Year!

Watching old family Christmas videos sounds like a fun thing to do during the holidays! Good for you for at least recording some video.
Thanks, my calf is feeling better. I think I just need a longer recovery between runs these days.
My husband got a new TV a few weeks again. I think it’s time for a new stand. That’s a really nice one! I got a GoPro for Christmas, not the HERO 4, but the HERO+ LCD. I haven’t had a chance to play with it much yet, but I’m hoping when I do my shots will turn out half as good as yours. Hope you have a Happy New Year!

Fun! Can’t wait to see your pictures, and remember, I take about 300 shots for every good one worth sharing. 🙂
That TV and entertainment center look great – and I love your trees!

Thanks! The trees are tributes to our family’s alma maters – Virginia Tech and West Virginia. I need to add one for George Washington University and Utah State!
Sounds like you had a fun Christmas. So nice that your daugher in laws family lives near by so they can spend time with both families 🙂 Happy New Year, Deb!

Hope you had a great Christmas, too, Jenny! Happy New Year!
Sounds like you had a really fun Christmas with lots of family time! I’m glad you were able to get out for a run and that the leg was feeling good. I ran 5 miles last Saturday morning, too, over at Burke Lake Park.
Y’all are brave to do your book night at the mall before Christmas – that could have been pretty stressful! I’m amazed that it didn’t end up being too bad, and I’m glad y’all were able to make the tradition work with Joseph and Julie’s availability.
Finally, GO HOKIES! We enjoyed watching Tech and then watching the Redskins game on Saturday night as well. So glad they could pull off a win in Beamer’s final game. I was definitely nervous those final few minutes!

We even got a parking space right across from the mall entrance next to Barnes and Noble! Someone backed out of a space right as we pulled up and the traffic guy (yes, it was so crazy at Tyson’s Mall that they had traffic guys in the parking garages), motioned for Bill to stop so he could have that space! 🙂
I LOVED that Coach Beamer went out with a win!
