Even Personal Trainers Can Have “all the Excuses”
This past week’s workouts were less than stellar and taking a cue from some of my clients, I came up with “all the excuses” for why I couldn’t workout. I’ve long known that my chances are far better at getting my run in if I get up and do it first thing in the morning. The same can be said for riding my spin bike or walking on the treadmill. Unfortunately, both are less fun to me and make it oh-so-hard to get out of bed at zero dark thirty.
In my defense, I was quite busy with work, two doctors appointments, and redecorating our guest bedroom. I’ll save the details of the bedroom and why it kept me so busy for later this month when we meet for the Ultimate Coffee Date.
About Those Two Doctor’s Appointments
I had an appointment with my spine doctor’s PA on Thursday afternoon and after discussing what has been going on with my back, reviewing my MRI and x-ray results, and filling her in on what treatment I’ve been receiving from my chiropractor versus physical therapy, she recommended I stay with my chiro and see a doctor for epidural steroid injections.
Luck was with me and I was able to get an appointment for a consultation with the other doctor later that day and I’m scheduled for my first injection on Tuesday afternoon. I had great results with similar injections slightly higher in my spine in 2012 and I’m hopeful to see equally good results this time around. For a variety of reasons I’ve tried to avoid getting to this point, but with the combination of other treatments the pain eventually returned and I think it’s time to pull out the big guns – make that big needle.
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
Still no running…
Biking
Despite my best laid plans, I didn’t get on my spin bike a single time….
Strength Training
At least strength training is going well, nothing hurts when I lift, and I got all three sessions in last week. I spoke with my doctor about what lifts I’m doing and he said it’s fine for me to continue.
Yoga
I continued to focus on gentle stretches for my lower back/SI joint area and added in one of my older favorite yoga routines on Friday morning.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – A Week Without Running…
Looking ahead to this coming week, I’m working on another installment of Ask Coach Deb and hope to finish up a post about hydration.
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed either outside or in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- • When do you prefer to workout? Morning, mid-day, or evening?
- • If you make excuses, what excuses do you use for why you can’t fit in your regular exercises?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I am definitely a morning exercised although if I miss the morning and can escape work, I will try to get into an afternoon Orangetheory class. I don’t have motivation once I get home, though. I hope you get some relief!
You scared me with your coffee date reference and made me think I’d forgotten, but you are planning ahead — we’ll open the link up Jan 31for the Feb 1 link-up.
Yes, definitely planning ahead for our coffee date. I missed last month’s!
I am a mid morning girl. I need my coffee to kick in 🙂 Hope you have a better week ahead
Thanks, Deborah! My week is off to a better start already – I rode my spin bike this afternoon.
I’m a morning girl by default, but sometimes switch to evenings and then its hard to switch back 🙂 It’s a lot easier for me to do the mornings when the weather is better, at this point knowing it’s potentially icy makes it hard to plan to get up!
Hope the injections help!
You have such good reason to be cautious about running on the ice.
And thanks, so do I!
You know I’m all about the early morning workouts 🙂 Sorry the back is still an issue for you, OUCH. Those shots kind of freak me out (though I’ve never had any LOL). Fingers crossed they work some magic on you. ((hugs))
Thanks, Kim! Keep those fingers crossed for me!
Work is usually my excuse – but it’s that. I can often work around it if I plan.
Glad you’re on the path to answers

Thanks, Cari!
I’m 100% a morning runner, and I’m also 100% if I know my body’s not OK with it, skipping isn’t an excuse, it’s a necessity. It sounds like you have a plan for your back, hope the shots help.

Thanks, Beckett! I’m totally fine with doing so little last week. I push hard in my workouts year round and a few weeks of down time from doing so much isn’t going to hurt at all.
I hope the injection helps your back! in answer to your questions, I am a total morning runner. Always have been. I can run in the afternoon, tho. I don’t make excuses, I just go, unless I’m sick or in pain.
I didn’t run this weekend but I did compete in a powerlifting meet! There’s always something new we can do, right?

Thanks, Wendy,! I hope it helps, too!
I saw your lifting video on your IG story and got chills when everyone started cheering. Way to go with those PR’s!
Sometimes we really are too busy.
I hope the injection helps your back. Dealing with pain is so difficult. Hopefully this will provide some relief.
I am totally a morning runner. If it doesn’t happen early, it doesn’t happen. I don’t even pretend anymore that I’ll get it done in the afternoon.

I’m sorry it’s come to the steroid injection, but I hope it gives you the relief you need. Back pain is no fun at all. I’m a morning to mid-morning runner. Any later than that and life will most definitely get in the way.
Glad you have a plan for dealing with your back issues! I am always so much less motivated when I’m not running or when I’m injured. Great job with the strength training! That will go a long way.
While I’m sure you are so frustrated, I am very glad you have a plan of action. I also love how that skeleton looks like it’s been punished and put in the corner.
I think all of your excuses are perfectly valid and you are good to listen to your body. It will get better.
I thought the very same thing about the skeleton! I guess he was just showing off his beautiful spine! 😉
I’m an early morning runner – the weights can wait until later in the day. I hope the shots give you relief. It must be so frustrating!

Thanks, Lisa!
I am a morning runner as well. Thought lately it has been difficult to wake up (even if I am not running). I do like to sleep but can’t believe that I would “easily” wake up between 4:30-5:00 to run. What a bummer about the back pain and hope the injections help.

Waking up that early to run does get easier. And thank you – fingers crossed that the injection will help!
I prefer late-night workouts!
Feels easier to use all of my energy without having to worry about going to work or running errands for the rest of the day.
