Yoga Friends
Sunday afternoon while watering the flowers on our deck, I noticed this little skink hanging out with my yoga frogs. He stayed in chaturanga while eying the frogs in their more relaxing poses.
Summer Kickoff
I have to keep this post short and sweet because today’s our Annual Summer Kickoff Barbecue. This year we decreased our guest list from 99 families to 44 (and a lot of those are away for the holiday); but for the most part, there’s still the same amount of work going into it. There’s food to shop for (although a lot less), tables to set up, drinks to put out on ice, food to cook in advance, etc. I’m so thankful that my friend Betty is willing to help me out year after year. It eases up the burden and allows Bill and me to visit with our friends.
One thing I can’t control and take care of in advance is the weather – here’s today’s hourly forecast. The barbecue starts at 5 PM… You know, Momma N’s gotta make everything wet and messy for the third year in a row.
Seriously, I need to channel my inner yoga frogs and chill. There’s nothing I can do about the weather and our basement is plenty big enough to accommodate everyone if we need to rush inside. As my dad would have said, “There’s a 40% chance it won’t rain.”
Even though we celebrate Memorial Day with a barbecue every year, we do take the time to remember those who fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we might live freely in this beautiful country.
Injury Followup
I had my followup appointment with my spine doctor to go over my MRI results a couple of weeks ago and totally forgot to mention it. My spine is ugly, ya’ll! Basically, I have one plump and healthy looking disc, and the rest are rather squished and pathetic. I’ve even developed a tiny bit of scoliosis as a result and there are little herniations all over the place. No wonder I’ve lost 1.5 inches in height in the last several years.
I suppose that’s the price you pay when you wanted to run all the marathons, and for years ran a minimum of sixteen miles on Saturday morning whether you were in a training cycle or not.
My doctor recommends that I continue on with my current routine and that surgery isn’t necessary – thank goodness. My numb foot is a rare occurrence these days so things really are progressing back to my new normal.
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
Two of my runs this week were at zero dark thirty and solo, but I felt good and ran strong. Of course, cool temps and low humidity didn’t hurt.
On Friday evening, I didn’t reach out to my girlfriends in time to set up a run date so I slept in a little and didn’t head out on Saturday morning until 8 AM. Even with running later, the weather was decent (the heat is moving in today) and I felt pretty good.
Biking
I had hoped to get out on my bike after Saturday’s run, but my time was limited so I had to skip it…
Strength Training
Boom, three out of three completed.
Yoga
I’ve added Yoga for Cycling (affiliate link) into my routine and even got Bill to join me. It’s a short routine (less than ten minutes) so there’s no excuse not to fit it in at least once a week.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
I had hoped to finish the second part of my recap of our Five Boro Bike Tour, but it didn’t happen. I got a good start on it with my pictures, but have to add the story. For me, the pictures take the longest, so I’m off to a good start. I do need to get it finished so I can start working on the DC Bike Ride recap.
Tomorrow I’ll have a post commemorating Memorial Day and then on Friday, I’m planning to join Marcia for her fun Runfessions linkup! It’s been a while so I need to get some things off my chest. 😉
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- Have you lost any height from running?
- How do you celebrate Memorial Day? ~ We’ve gone to Arlington National Cemetery a few times in years past…
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I think a lot of us have spines that are probably more messed up than we think (which reminds me I really need a chiro appt!). But you’re feeling better, so life is good.
Good luck with the BBQ. I agree with your Dad. 🙂
We’ll celebrate tomorrow with my parents, which is appropriate since my Dad is a WWII vet.
The weather held out and we had fantastic, albeit warm, weather for our barbecue!
Please thank your dad for his service. I’m happy you were able to celebrate with him.
Hope the weather held out for your BBQ. I should be landing in DC around that time too so I hope it’s clear. Great to see you back running a bunch this week too Thanks for linking up

The storms stayed to our north so we were fine! And yes, it feels great to be running again. 🙂
I like your dad’s thinking! I often say the same thing (and I’ve been focusing on the % of NO rain vs. what the weather people tell us to expect LOL). Hope Momma N shows you a little bit of mercy this afternoon! She’s actually been surprising us with some sunshine on all these “rainy” days…Thanks for linking!
Momma N was surprisingly cooperative on Sunday and we had great weather! 😀
I don’t want to know if I’m shrinking…I spend way more time at doctor appointments than I ever wanted to! Glad you still get to run.
I love those yoga frogs! I had them in my garden last year; forgot to bring them in over the winter, and now they’re powder. They did not like the polar vortex!
My friends and I laugh because when we get together these days all we talk about is our doctor’s appointments. It used to just be me and my running friends talking about our injuries, but now it’s with all my friends. Getting older isn’t for sissies. 😉
I love those little frogs, too, and I especially love that I got them on clearance!
I have gotten a little shorter over the years! 🙁 I’m glad you don’t need surgery on your spine right now. I am in awe of you being the hostess with the mostest!! Dang! Hope it all turned out well.

I suspect most of us distance runners are shrinking… 🙁
The barbecue was a huge success and the storms stayed away until after midnight when all the guests were long gone!
I hope you are having fun right now with your guests. that party sounds like a lot of work, but so much fun! I bet your guests look forward to it each year.
So sorry to hear about your spine. Getting older just is no fun sometimes, is it?
I waited too long to run this morning and had to deal with the heat and humidity. Sweating felt good, though. I just did a short one.

The weather turned out just fine for the barbecue and we had so much fun. Yes, it’s a lot of work, but it’s always great to catch up with our friends.
Good luck with your BBQ. The skies have been threatening here for over an hour, but so far it’s been an empty threat. I’m glad you don’t need surgery, but it is kind of a bummer to have all that spine damage. Now that I now osteoporosis is rampant on my mom’s side of the family, I am going to ask about screening and prevention at my next check-up.
I think my doctor started having me get DEXA scans every five years when I hit 40. So far, so good, but I need to keep an eye on it because my mom has osteopenia.

I am in awe that your list used to have 99 families. I hope the weather cooperates for your BBQ.
Happy to hear you don’t need surgery

We were lucky and the weather held out!
I’ve never heard of a Skink before- he’s kinda cute!
I can’t believe it’s already so warm there! YOWSA! Great job still getting your runs done!
Skinks are very common here in Virginia. My neighbor just showed us a picture of one she saw on her deck and it had a brown body with a bright blue tail. It was very cute, too!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a skink before – that is a cool looking lizard!!
I hope the rain held off or at least passed quickly for you. My husband would be right there with your dad on the weather outlook – he’s always a glass half full and I always need it 🙂
Good news about no surgery too. Hopefully the foot continues to feel good!

Skinks are common here, but they can blend right in with the mulch and easily be missed. They’re fast little buggers, too!

99 families. WOW. Your basement may be bigger than my apartment building!
Yay skinks

Generally about half of the invitees are away for the holiday weekend so nowhere nearly that many people can come. Also, we have a very large deck and back yard and the hope is that most people will be able to enjoy the outdoors. 😀
