Family Christmas Celebrations
Bill, our sons, daughter-in-law, and I spent last weekend visiting my mom on the farm. After the craziness of the last few weeks, it was nice to kick back and relax with family for a few days. We arrived home around 3 PM on Monday and after unpacking, I hit up the grocery store for the remainder of items I needed for meals and baking for the rest of the week.
On Christmas Eve, we let Pablo open his present from his black lab friend Teddy (whose human is my good friend Tracy).
The gift was an adorable customized scarf which made Pablo look quite dapper.
After Christmas Eve mass we enjoyed our traditional family time, but missed Jess who was out of town visiting her parents.
On Christmas night Pablo posed in our basement with his new Baby Shark. He wasn’t the only one receiving a Nationals related gift, there were lots of World Series Champions items under the tree for everyone!
Book Night, an Annual Tradition
Friday night, once Jess was back in town, we celebrated our annual Book Night, a night between Christmas and New Year’s Day when we go to a book store and the kids get to pick out any books they want as part two of their Christmas gifts. Afterwards we always enjoy a family dinner out. This year we went to Arlington to Barnes and Noble followed by dinner at Il Radicchio, a quaint little Italian restaurant where the food was amazing!
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
Even though I was exhausted from six hours on the road, I knew I’d be bummed if I didn’t join my friends for our planned Monday evening Christmas lights run at 6:30 PM. It was 43° when I left my house (which for me is shorts and short sleeves weather as long as I have on gloves) so I took advantage of wearing my Christmas shorts. Unfortunately, the temperature dropped to 38° during our run and I got a little chilly. We ran through our friend Angela’s neighborhood and past the winners of her neighborhood’s Christmas lights contest.
The single-family house winner (shown below) even had a Candy Cane Lane that visitors could follow around to the back of the house to see more decorations, and if you were lucky, the homeowners met you outside with a candy cane. Coordinating music was also available for drivers to tune in to as they slowed to enjoy the light show.

We even paused for a group picture with Santa in his space sleigh!
I ran super early on both Thursday and Friday mornings. I averaged a minute per mile faster on Thursday than Friday which just goes to show that my body takes longer to recover from runs these days than it did even just a couple of years ago.
Biking
On Saturday morning I hopped on my spin bike (affiliate link), but only had time for six miles.
Strength Training
Despite a busy week, I fit my strength training sessions in by moving the days around.
Yoga
I only found time for three ten-minute yoga sessions this week.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – Catching Up with a Good Friend and Fashion over Function
- Monday – Searching Walnut Grove Farm for the Perfect Christmas Tree
- Wednesday – Wishing You the Happiest of Holidays with a Favorite Christmas Memory
- Thursday – Runfessions of Old School Logging, Kringle Addictions, and Funny GoPro Captures
Coming up this week, on Tuesday I’ll publish my annual Year of Running recap.
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed either outside or in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- • Did you go on a run, walk, or drive specifically to enjoy looking at Christmas lights?
- • What was your favorite thing from this past week? ~ Mine was spending time with all the kids at Book Night
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
We are such Christmas slackers. My next door neighbor took care of bringing out ALL THE LIGHTS. I wanted to put one of those “ditto” signs up pointing to their display. LOL. Looks like you had a nice holiday week!
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Wendy!
Book night is an awesome tradition! I like it.
Pablo looks extremely pleased with baby shark. Bandit has taken to growling at Lola if he has one of his toys & she tries to jump up with him, which is why we don’t leave toys just laying out. She’s actually quite good at defending her kongs. 🙂
Your lights run looks lovely (although I would’ve been frozen!
Book Night is one of our sons’ favorite family traditions (we’ve been doing it for about twenty years).
I don’t know how Pablo would be about sharing his toys since he’s an “only dog.”
Well book night sounds like a fantastic tradition to repeat! Your neighborhood has some great decorations to run by. Looks like a fab week of family and fitness

Last week was a great week all the way around. This week I’m taking it easier because of my back, but I think I should be back to normal by next week!
Holy moly, those Christmas lights are incredible! WOW. What a fun run!
I’m shorts in 43 degrees too 🙂
Love Pablo’s dapper scarf. So handsome. Your family photo is great!
Yes, some of the houses were amazingly beautiful and some were fun and tacky with their Christmas decorations. I loved them all!
I have a couple of other friends who wear shorts in the low 40’s. Glad we’re not alone!
I remember you mentioning Book Night last year…what a great tradition! All of those houses are totally LIT. They look amazing! Such a nice family pic of all of you by the tree 🙂 Best wishes for a great 2020!!
Thanks, Kim! Happy New Year to you as well!
I may steal the book night idea for our family. We don’t go out to eat a lot, so it would be a nice treat to go to the bookstore and then out for a meal. My stepsons are voracious readers.
Love the Christmas lights. I don’t run in the dark, but I love seeing our neighborhood lights on our nightly dog walks.

Please steal away! We’ve been doing Book Night for about twenty years and our sons (and now the girls) love it!
I ran last week in a park because there were light displays. I love this time of year – the decorations not the weather.
I spent time with family and friends – that was great.
Book night is a nice idea – we have added that to our running group and tennis group.

I used to love winter weather and looked forward to snow like a little child. Now, not so much!
I’m happy you were able to get together with family and friends over the holidays and yay for multiple Book Nights! Happy New Year!
What a great gift for Pablo! That scarf is just too cute!
I love the book night tradition. I feel like that’s something I should start with my friends and/or family.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2020!
Yes, Pablo was pretty proud of himself. LOL
Our family loves Book Night! We’ve been doing it for about twenty years.
Happy New Year, Kim!
I’m so glad you had some time to relax and recharge. Pablo is THE BEST.
I didn’t really get to see too many holiday lights this year. Driving around at night hasn’t really been comfortable for me, so I just skipped out. The boys did a nice job of decorating our home but that’s about all I got to see.
Hope you have a wonderful New Year!
Awww, thanks! We think Pablo is the best, too. 😉
What a bummer about the timing of your accident (Is anytime ever good, though?). Here’s hoping you heal quickly and 2020 is your best year yet!
Happy New Year!
Yes! we did Christmas Lights running as well! I am pretty sure it was your photos that made me decide I was going to do this on Christmas Day Evening! We don’t have decorations like you guys have in the States but still it was nice.
We don’t do much for the holidays but I did enjoy our traditional Movie Day on 2nd Christmas / Boxing Day. We do that every year and I love that I have something like that to look forward to.
No races though, but I did get to parkrun in Dusseldorf again.
Cool, I’m glad I inspired you to go on a Christmas lights run!
Happy New Year, Renée!
Man, those houses look beautiful! Pablo look so sharp with his scarf. 🙂 I love the Book Night idea – what a wonderful thing to do. My favorite thing last week was spending time with my family too.

I’m glad you were able to get in lots of family time, too!
Happy New Year!
That Book Tradition is fantastic! Would love to start that with my family – and having dinner afterwards is a beautiful touch! I can see why those houses placed in the décor competition! I love the second place single-family house best!
Our sons were in elementary school when we started our Book Night tradition and twenty some years later we haven’t missed a year. It’s one of our favorite family traditions. 🙂
The second place single-family house was my favorite as well!
Happy New Year, Shathiso!
Those Christmas lights are amazing/insane.
I love the idea of Book Night. This is the first year in ages I didn’t get a book or a gift card for a book
