How to Recap our Incredible Family Vacation
Yesterday we flew home from, quite possibly, my second best vacation ever (Italy was the best). Having our adult children with us to explore the desert southwest made one our favorite places all the more meaningful.
I’ve decided the best way to recap this incredible family vacation is to break it down by National Parks/State Parks and to keep it long on pictures and short on words. If I keep my recaps short and sweet, I should be able to get them posted much sooner. Of course, tomorrow I head back to work, so there’s that… 😉
No Time for Cocktails by the Pool
We rented a really nice southwest style four-bedroom Airbnb with a pool in St. George, Utah. We had a tough time picking a central location and settled on St. George, choosing not to pack up and move several times. In hindsight, staying in Kanab for a few of our nights and then moving on to St. George might have been a better idea.
With days filled with driving to various state and national parks, hiking, and then grabbing dinner on our way home, we were often gone from before 8 AM to 8 or 9 PM. Exhausted, we’d shower and hit the bed to rest for the following day. It wasn’t until our last night that we returned to the house by 6 PM and had some time to enjoy the pool.
Coming Full Circle with Vacationing Style
Way back in our early years of marriage, Bill and I drove cross-country several times, exploring our vast country along the way. It was at that time that we fell in love with our National Parks, especially those in the Rocky Mountains and the desert southwest.
When our sons were little, we took week-long winter ski vacations in New England and summer vacations at Bill’s parents’ beach house. It was rare that our vacations include sitting by a pool reading and sipping cocktails.
In recent years, Bill and I have returned to our cross-country explorations, often retracing our earlier adventures. This year, we brought our children with us, sharing with them a part of the country so different from the east coast.
Instagram Highlighted the Week
I posted a highlight of each day to Instagram throughout the week. Check it out for a quick reference to the spots we visited.
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Hiking
I’ve always said that the best way to explore a new city or town is by taking an early morning run. The same can be said for hiking. Driving through a park can be breathtaking, but you’ll often miss hidden wonders when not traveling by foot. Here’s a list of our daily hikes
- Sunday – 4 trails in Zion National Park
- Monday – 3 trails along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon
- Tuesday – 4 trails in Kanab / Grand Staircase Escalante
- Wednesday – 4 trails in Bryce Canyon National Park
- Thursday – short hike to Horseshoe Bend and Lower Antelope Canyon in Navajo Nation, both near Page, Arizona
Running
Even if I’d wanted to run this past week, it would have been hard to find the time.
Biking
On Friday, we rented mountain bikes from Red Coyote Cyclery in Virgin, Utah. Last year in Moab, I discovered I’m not particularly good at biking across rocks and down steep twisty trails with sudden drop-offs and wanted to stay on an easy gently winding trail. What’s easy to one rider might be difficult to another and I learned that an easy mountain biking trail can be a little scary. More on that in my recap later in the week…
Strength Training
On the days I normally lift, I made sure to fit in push-ups and lunges along with my daily planks. Other than that, I didn’t really have time to worry about strength training. Besides, climbing across boulders and pulling myself up small rock ledges gave me plenty of opportunity to flex my muscles.
Yoga
In all honesty, I didn’t even think about doing any yoga other than my cobra poses which I’ve added as part of my morning planking routine. I’d planned to strike a few poses for pictures out in the desert, but even that eluded me.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – Healing and Hiking
- Thursday – Runfessions of an Idle Runner
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- What’s your favorite National Park? ~ It’s hard to pick, isn’t it?
- Do you hit the gym while on vacation?
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I love the pic of your bike with the bird. I had to stare at it to realize the bird wasn’t real! Sounds like you had a lovely trip. I’ve only driven through Utah but would love to go back and explore. It’s so pretty!

Same here even though I took the picture of the bike in front of the mural! In real life it didn’t look nearly as cool. 😀
I’ve only seen the Grand Canyon once, and that was from one of the viewing points. I’d love to go back some day and do the Rim to Rim 😉 I’d be a total scaredy cat on a mountain bike on those rocky trails, too.YIKES!
We’d visited the southern rim many years ago and couldn’t believe the difference and how many trees were “up north.”
You all really packed a lot into your vacation. Traveling with older kids is so much better and more fun! I have not been to Utah-definitely on the list! Thanks for linking up and welcome home

Thanks, Deborah! We’re already thinking about next year!
Sounds like such an amazing trip and one I would love with ALL the hiking and biking!! I took a detour to check out your Insta (and followed you…thought I already was??) and WOW!!! Just breathtaking in the photos so I can only imagine how they looked in real life – so gorgeous!!
Looking forward to hearing more about the mountain biking and I totally understand about perception of going downhill or dealing with switchbacks and rocky terrain. I don’t usually have an issue but sometimes the people I’m with do!!

It was so fun, and yes, right up your alley (see what I did there?) 😉
Wow! Sounds like you had a great time and I love all the hiking that you were able to do.
I’ve never seen the Grand Canyon but it’s certainly on my bucket list!
We visited the south rim of the Grand Canyon many years ago and it was so interesting to see how different the landscape is on the north rim. The south rim is desert so I was surprised to see so much green farther north.
I have visited Bryce and Zion years ago. I really want to go back. Bryce is my fave.
I try to run outdoors on vacation. Rarely but the gym.
Good job as usual getting it ALL done.
Thanks Darlene! Of the five National Parks in Utah – Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, and Capitol Reef – it’s nearly impossible for me to pick a favorite, but Bryce is certainly way up there!
We did an “epic road trip” last year with our camper to most of those parks. I hear ya – I took my running shoes and ran the first day. Beyond that, I flopped in bed each night thoroughly exhausted from a great day of hiking through the beautiful national parks! I can’t wait to see your pictures.

Last year we went to the Grand Tetons (after my half marathon there) and then headed to Southern Utah to hit up Arches and Canyonlands. I didn’t run then either (other than my race) and it was the same thing, I was exhausted at the end of each day from all our hiking.
When we were in UT a couple of years ago, we went to Bryce & Zion. I skipped most of my runs (it was the week before a half) in favor of hiking. It reignited my love of hiking! Now if the weather could cooperate with that . . .
How wonderful to share all that with grown children. Glad the trip didn’t disappoint!
You seriously can’t go wrong with a national park.
We are already dreaming about next year’s trip. Have you been to Glacier or Acadia? I’d love to visit either one of those.
That bike/bird pic is great!
Your pictures on Instagram were AMAZING. Wow…Utah. Incredible!
Active vacations are the best, but then you need a vacation from your vacation to sleep, ha!
Thanks so much; we had a blast!
[…] I mentioned in last week’s rundown, I really, really wanted to run the Firecracker 5K on Independence Day – I’d run it the […]
So hard to pick a favorite.
At the moment leaning Kasha-Katuwe/Tent Rocks and Bandelier along with the Badlands. But such a tough call. I wonder if Grand Canyon might have been higher if I hadn’t seen those first

Wow, I’ve never been to any of those National Parks you mention. We’ve now visited both the southern and the northern rim of the Grand Canyon and they’re so different it’s like visiting two totally different parks.
