I have a rule: family first, always, and this weekend was no exception! Unless I’ve had a chance to mostly pre-write my Sunday post, it might not get done if my kids are in town. So here’s my weekly rundown, better late than never…
On Sunday, Bill and I drove to Maryland to ride on the C&O Canal Towpath with our friend Chuck. We arrived at the Point of Rocks parking lot only to find it closed. After a little research, we drove about three miles east to the next entrance to the towpath, but got delayed as a long, slow-moving freight train passed.
Sadly the next entrance to the towpath was closed as well due to flooding. The Potomac River was out of control and I can only imagine how much damage has been done to the towpath as a result of all the recent rain we’ve had.
We hopped back in our cars and drove back to Virginia to ride on the W&OD Trail, the trail we ride on most Sundays. The only difference on that particular day was that we’d spent an extra hour and a half just getting to the trail… We had a delightful time catching up with Chuck and look forward to more rides together this fall.
I headed out for my run at 5 AM on Monday morning and immediately felt different. Granted, it was 60° with lower humidity and I felt a certain pep in my step, but my feet felt lighter and my pace was about 30 seconds faster than it’s been lately. It wasn’t until I got back in my house that I realized that I was actually wearing my Saucony Peregrine 8 trail shoes (affiliate link) rather than my usual Asics Gel Nimbus 20 (affiliate link).
My schedule on Thursday made it impossible for me to run before 5 PM. I suppose I could have run at 4 AM, but NO. It was hot and humid and quite the contrast to Monday’s delightful run. I wore my Asics, but I’m sure the lack of a pep in my step was due the weather, not the shoes. 😉 I bumped into two of my Cruiser friends and ended up running the last half of my run with them which was such a treat!
While out, I ran to the orange fencing to check out the repair progress on the bridges behind our house. Not much has happened, so sadly, I’m confined to a three-mile loop if I want to stay in the woods. Of course, I can’t complain and know I’m extremely lucky to have a 23-mile network of wooded trails in my neighborhood even though I temporarily have to take the long way around to get to the rest of the trails (unless I wade across the creek).
My son Daniel, his girlfriend Jess, and Pablo came to visit for the weekend and arrived mid-afternoon on Friday. I couldn’t wait to try this fleece lined rain jacket on Pablo, a hand-me-down from one of my friends whose dogs are too big for it. It fit perfectly and Pablo was more than happy to model it for a picture.
Saturday morning I got up before everyone else and met my friend Tracy for a run. I got home just as everyone was getting up and whipped up a big breakfast complete with avocado toast (I pretty much make guacamole and spread it on toast).
And after my run, Pablo was happy to lick the sweat off my legs!
Saturday evening, I had the pleasure of seeing two of my original running buddies at the wedding reception of my friend Susan’s daughter. Even though it’s been over fifteen years since the three of us ran together every morning before getting our kids off to school and we now live in three different states, we picked right up where we left off and got our cardio fix on, this time dancing for hours. Our kids are grown and we’ve gotten older, but we’re still three fit mamas!
Sadly, our weekend flew by and before we knew it, Sunday afternoon was upon us and it was time for the kids to leave. It won’t be long, though, until Pablo comes back for two separate one-week visits while Daniel and Jess travel!
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – After Weeks Of Mist And Rain, Finally Some Fall-Like Weather!
- Wednesday – And Just Like That, Wednesday Word Sort Of Fizzled Out…
- Friday – A 5K World Record, Cracking My Cooktop, And Isn’t It Supposed To Be Fall?
Looking ahead to this coming week I have nothing specific in the pipeline. Work is incredibly busy, I’m meeting up with a friend for coffee on Tuesday afternoon, other friends for happy hour and dinner on Friday, and I’ve got a dental appointment Thursday afternoon, all of which will all take precedence over writing. Perhaps this week I should say, “Life first, and then the blog.”
In addition to the runs I mentioned above, here’s a complete run-down of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- When do you blog? How do you fit it all in?
- Do you have long-time-friends that you don’t get to see often enough?
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s a wrap… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Holly at HoHo Runs and Wendy from Taking The Long Way Home for their Weekly Wrap. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Avocado toast!
Went for brunch with friends this morning at an iconic and closing soon restaurant and what do I have. Of course.
Pablo is so cute 0- I know I say that every time but I think you agree 😀
Love how you recap your posts. Even though I subscribe some get missed
I had avocado toast for the first time in NJ this summer and have made it several time since. It’s so yummy! And yes, I agree that Pablo is the cutest (and sweetest). 😀
It’s crack!
If you have a Le Pain Quotidien near you, theirs is one of my favorites.
If you do dairy, feta on top of standard just adds a wonderful flavor combo
I definitely understand how life takes precedence over blogging. I usually have time to write – I sometimes fall behind commenting and responding to comments.
Do you plank for 5 straight minutes? Wow! That’s amazing. I’ve seen this in your posts before and often wondered. You and your friends should be proud of yourselves for staying so fit. It takes commitment!
I do plank five minutes straight per day, and have done so for just over two years (forgetting only twice). I do a two-minute straight arm plank, move into a side plank for one minute, then turn to the other side for one minute, and finish with a one-minute forearm plank. My core thanks me for my consistency!
Wow! That’s amazing!!! Way to go. I am trying to build up my plank time, but I just do the forearm plank.
I’ve been having the same thoughts about the blog too. In fact, the week of my sister trip, I’ve already made plans for a sub-host for the WW. I don’t want to be blogging on the trip!
You and your friends look great! Send me whatever you’re drinking…
Every week, I say I’m going to spend ten minutes per day on my weekly wrap and then don’t. Keeping true to that plan would help a lot because my business has really picked up and I just don’t have the same amount of time for blogging that I did in the past. It’s all good, though!
Pablo is adorable in his raincoat! How fun to catch up with your old friends and dance the night away. You all look amazing! I’ve been blogging much less than ever. Summer has always been a difficult time to fit it in. Often, I think the idea (or the number of people blogging) is waning overall. Or is it just me? Thanks for linking.
I think you’re right. I’ve seen a huge downturn in the number of running blogs out there over the 5-1/2 years I’ve been blogging.
Well I was expecting to read that you did some sort of long jump over the bridge so you could get your run done LOL. Some weeks I have a hard time fitting it all in myself!
HaHa! I was a good citizen and didn’t cross the orange fencing even though I did lean across it to take the picture. 😉
I have to agree to family before the blog, which is why I didn’t have a post until today 🙂 LOVE Pablo and also love how many fit moms you were able to hang with all weekend!
I want to keep my blog fun and not be a chore so this makes complete sense and it sounds like you’re on the same page. Actually, that’s another reason I just stopped my Wednesday Word linkup.
It definitely sounds like you have a busy week coming up! I’m not a social butterfly — I guess that’s how I blog. 🙂 Oh, and I don’t work . . .
True, we do entertain and get together with friends a lot; and that work thing really gets in the way! 😉
