A Little Winter Respite
Bill and I just returned from a quick getaway to Tampa, Florida where we attended our niece’s wedding. It was a delightful and much-needed mini-vacation where we enjoyed temps in the 70’s while it snowed back home. These pasty white legs enjoyed some breathing room after being trapped under jeans and yoga pants for months.
We arrived in Florida on Thursday morning and while waiting for additional family to arrive, we met Bill’s brother and wife for a nice and relaxing lunch on the patio of one of the restaurants at the Innisbrook Resort.
Thursday evening we attended the rehearsal dinner which was held at a hibachi grilled owned by the groom’s family. It was an impressive sight seeing the chefs work two tables at once.
It was so nice to spend time with Bill’s family and get to know the groom’s family. In general, we laughed, ate, drank, visited, danced, and laughed some more. It was truly a fabulous time away from the rat race of our daily lives.
A Glimpse into what Retirement Might Look Like
On Friday morning, we slept in until 8:30 and it felt magnificent. We walked just over a half mile to the resort’s well-equipped fitness center where I hopped on a treadmill and ran a mile while Bill worked out on an elliptical right beside me. After our warmup, we spent over an hour lifting weights, and then moved on into the yoga studio to stretch (I did my yoga for sciatica routine). After our workout, we walked back to our room and then drove around in search of a place to grab a quick lunch. I could see our mornings during retirement being quite similar – minus the sleeping in – I’d still want to get up early and bring up the sun during a run at least a couple of days a week!
Physical Therapy Update
Since last week’s update, I had one PT session where my PT suggested skipping this coming week’s session and see how I’m doing in one more week. I’m thrilled to report that I three successful one-mile runs with zero residual pain. I’ve had no foot numbness for about five days and weened myself completely off of the anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant meds my doctor had prescribed. Unfortunately, since writing this paragraph yesterday at the airport, my leg started hurting on the plane and I woke up this morning with foot numbness. I popped a couple of Advil and hope that will calm things back down and that this is just a temporary blimp in my healing.
This coming week I hope to try a couple of two-milers outside, weather permitting. Not running during January and February has turned me into a cold-weather wimp. 😉
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
I had three one-mile runs on my treadmill (affiliate link) this past week and each one felt better than the previous!
- Monday – 11:45 pace and it felt very labored
- Wednesday – 10:42 and it felt hard
- Friday – 10:32 pace and it felt much easier
As I mentioned earlier, I’m hoping that I can muster up the motivation this coming week to get back to my super early runs. It’s amazing how quickly good habits go by the wayside and bad habits get picked up – I’m looking at you warm cozy bed on cold winter mornings.
Biking
There was nothing really new happening on my spin bike (affiliate link) this week. Knowing I’d be out of town later in the week, I made sure to fit in my rides earlier in the week and rode 52 miles over four days.
Strength Training
Strength training went well and with making a couple of minor adjustments, I had zero foot numbness after my workouts. I replaced the guilty parties with other hip strengthening exercises and so far so good!
Yoga
My spine thinks cobra pose is the bomb! That is all.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – A Run is a Run, No Matter How Short!
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- If you live where it gets cold during the winter, do you ever head to warmer climates for a few days to get away? ~ We always took ski vacations so this was almost a first for us.
- Weddings: love them or tolerate them? ~ Bill and I love attending weddings!
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s a wrap… Have a great week!

We rarely do these types of little getaways so this was extra enjoyable!
Florida really isn’t my thing but I regretted not booking a warm weather vacation this year. I need some warmth on my skin. I hope the little blip with numbness goes away and you continue to make progress.

LOL, the wedding was in Florida so that sort of determined where we needed to travel. A lot of our friends have retired to Florida, but I can’t imagine the summers there (not a fan of humidity, although we have plenty in Virginia). For warmth, we’re more of the desert type which is why we’re going back to Southern Utah…
The hubby and I are headed to Tampa in two weeks, and I’m excited for (hopefully) much warmer weather! This winter has been painful. Glad I am slowly getting back outside more…though all the puddles and random ice are still a buzzkill. Thanks for joining us for the WRD 😉
I hope the weather in Tampa is as nice while you’re there as it was while we were visiting!
Congrats to your niece! That location looks so beautiful. I am jealous of the warm weather.

Thank you! It was a gorgeous location for a wedding and we had so much fun!
I was in Florida for a triathlon training camp and the weather was amazing…even if just for 5 days 🙂 I’m SO happy to hear your PT is going well and you were able to do the three runs without residual pain – well, except for the last part. Hopefully the Advil did it’s job and you will be back to running pain free this week. Good luck!

Thank you, Allie! I had a pretty comfortable two-mile run this morning!
We’re not skiiers. We don’t enjoy cold & snow (so don’t ask why we lived for 7 years in VT (up north!), and now 10 years in upstate NY. That’s half our marriage. So yes, we do like a little warm weather vacation in the winter, but we actually don’t do it all that often.
I am retired. Sort of. So my day sort of gets to be what I want & I like it that way. 🙂 But I never sleep in. 6 am is actually relatively late for me. Turns out my siblings are pretty much the same way.
I hope that one moment of numbness was just a minor blip on your way to recovery!

Thanks, Judy! I felt pretty good this morning on my short little run. 🙂
Your getaway sounds divine! Especially after being so cold!
We don’t generally tend to head to anywhere warm in the winter. Not that we don’t want to. I mean I can handle warmer than the Netherlands but we have to go pretty far away to get a break from the coldness. We did go to Napels (Italy) for Ron’s 50th and on the day that he had to do his long run he was in shorts and a tank. In January! We don’t ski either. Usually our getaways in the winter are non-existent or a quick city trip for Ron’s birthday or our anniversary (last week).
I love weddings! If only more Dutch people would get married instead of just living together forever! Someone invite me to a wedding!
I did NOT race this past weekend. My race was cancelled – whomp whomp 🙁
I was so bummed to read that your race was canceled. 🙁
I would love to go to Naples someday. I’ve been to Rome and Florence, not to Naples. My husband has though – his grandparents were from Naples.
What a beautiful wedding venue! Congratulations to your niece and whole family! I’m still far from retirement, but I had a rare Monday off last week – I ran in the morning, had a leisurely shower, took the kids to the cinema at 11 am, did some random shopping and then at 4, I thought “Let me go to a pilates class!” Felt amazing! LOL
It sounds like you spent your day off doing things you really enjoy! How fun!
great idea for a getaway and getting things done. I am also planning something similar in the summer.
