My week was totally thrown off with Independence Day falling on Tuesday. Just like I’ve done for the previous four years, I started my July 4th holiday running a local race while wearing a rather dapper looking costume… for me, at least. Be sure to check back later this week (hopefully Thursday) to see just how underdressed I was as compared to some of my friends who were also running the Firecracker 5K.
Heavy rain most of the day on Thursday kept me off the running trail – yes, I’ve become a wimp – and Friday morning found me making up my missed run. The puddles covering much of the trail were a welcome distraction from my otherwise humid run. I’ve learned to plow right through the puddles because the grass on the side of the trail is usually mud soaked and I’d rather get my feet wet with clear water rather than mud. Besides, who doesn’t love playing in puddles?
After a trip to Wegman’s Friday afternoon, I made zucchini noodles with sautéed mushrooms and onions covered with Wegman’s fresh tomato sauce. A tossed salad and peach/coconut rum cocktail completed our delicious dinner.
Saturday morning Bill and I slept in and then messed around the house, managing not to head out until about noon. Fortunately, the temps were in the high 70’s/low 80’s and manageable. We ran/rode together for about a mile and then Bill sped off.
With a decent breeze blowing about, I felt pretty good and ventured off of the shaded neighborhood trails and onto the W&OD Trail. Because it was so late, the trail was relatively quiet. In other words, the smarter runners and bikers had gotten out much earlier!
After an incredibly relaxing Saturday afternoon, Bill and I decided to see if any of our Cruiser friends were up for a Sunday morning bike ride. Since my weekly recaps are Sunday to Saturday, I’ll talk about our bike ride next week. I will share a little spoiler – I rode 36 miles, my longest ever. Who knows? Perhaps there’s some sort of century ride in my future!
Looking ahead to this coming week, I hope to finally get my Firecracker 5K recap posted on Thursday. I had hoped to complete it last week, but can’t figure out how to get the watermarks off the free race photos – something new now that =PR= Races has switched over to using FlashFrame. As soon as my handsome IT guy has a chance to help me, I’ll wrap up the recap and get it posted.
In case you missed it, on Wednesday I wrote The Development And Evolution Of A Training Plan as part of my monthly Wednesday Word linkup.
In addition to running, here’s a more detailed look at what other workouts I completed this past week…
Fitness tools beyond the equipment in my gym that I used during the week included:
- Rodney Yee’s Complete Yoga For Beginners (affiliate link)
- Rodney Yee’s Intermediate Yoga (affiliate link)
- Rodney Yee’s Yoga Conditioning For Athletes (affiliate link)
- Tony Horton’s Ten Minute Trainer (affiliate link)
- Teeter Hang Ups Inversion (affiliate link)
Cameras used for blog photography include:

- And the occasional picture taken by Bill
- Questions:
- What did you do on Independence Day?
- Do you tiptoe around puddles or charge right through them?
- Did you race this weekend?
Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Holly at HoHo Runs and Tricia from MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap. Be sure to check out not only the hosts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I usually do try to get around puddles! I hate having wet feet and/or socks.
Running in the middle of the day in summer is no joke! And great job on the bike.

Thanks, Judy! It was fun, but now my shoulders are really tired from leaning over the handlebars. 😉
I agree that having the 4th of July on a Tuesday totally threw off my week as well! It looks like you had an awesome time in the race!
Loving the zoodles dish that you made for dinner. I miss Wegmans and wish I had one near me!

I think Wegman’s come into our area about ten years ago and now I don’t know how I lived without them. I’m lucky to live about fifteen minutes from two different Wegman’s – right in between them!
I love that you are biking so much! I usually do part of the Reston Century are you planning on doing it this year? I was thinking of the 50 miles this year

I looked up the date of the Reston Century and most likely we’ll still be at the beach that weekend. If not, I’m a definite maybe!
Not a fan of puddles…I usually slow down and walk through them with big steps. So not a fan….

My BRF (the one that moved away) was like that. She’d tiptoe around the puddles and get mud all over her shoes while I’d cut right through them and barely get my feet wet. 😀
Your Friday dinner looks delicious! I ran an Independence Day 5k and snagged an age group win so that was fun! I do typically jump over or around puddles but my run on Thursday morning was in the rain. I kind of enjoyed it. Nice job on the bike!

Congrats on your AG win – that’s so exciting!
This was was so off due to the holiday. The three days I worked, felt extra tough too. I’m glad you are enjoying your bike. We get to a make our own breeze on them!
This week was…. (sigh)
I know… I’m so surprised by how much cooler it is riding a bike. It makes me think my hands might freeze this winter. 🙁
I use the puddles as an excuse for plyometrics!
I’d like to ride my bike more, but it really bothers my wrists and knees. I’m planning on trying it again after next weeks RnR Half.

HaHa! Don’t pull a hamstring jumping over a puddle!
I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who feels it in the knees on my rides. Actually, it’s only my right knee that feels a little off after all of my rides, but clears up in less than a day. I was surprised that this was happening because I thought biking was supposed to be so good for the knees.
I love running right through puddles. Most people I run with think that’s weird, but I don’t mind being wet. I guess it’s the salty beach soul in me. I love water! It sounds like you had a good week and a fun race on the 4th. Thanks for linking! 🙂
Or perhaps it’s the little kid in you! 😀
Great week of workouts! I love your running skirt from the 4th of July race. Where did you find it?
Also LOVE Wegman’s! We don’t have one in our area but if we are racing in a city where there is one we always have to stop.

Thank you for the skirt compliment! I ordered it from Amazon a couple of years ago.
That peach coconut drink sound so refreshing about now!
Can’t wait to hear more about your race on the 4th. I love when people dress patriotic for a run!
One day I just made up the recipe for the peach cocktail… 🙂 It’s so refreshing and perfect for at the beach. Here you go – put ice in a highball glass and then fill about 1/3 or 1/2 full with coconut rum. Finish filling the glass with sparkling peach Izzie that you can get at Whole Foods. Garnish with a peach slice and enjoy!
BTW, I’m hoping to have my Firecracker 5K recap finished in time to post on Thursday!
We went on a long ride today – maybe we crossed paths? Deb has me thinking about the Reston ride at the end of August I think – join us!
We started in Ashburn at 7:30 and rode to Purcellville and back. Were you out this far? I would be bummed if we passed each other and didn’t realize it. Yes, Deborah mentioned the Reston Century Ride to me, too. There’s a really good chance that we’ll still be down on the Outer Banks then, but as I told her, if we’re back in time, I’m a definite maybe. It really sounds fun!
Your 4th of July attire is perfect! Congrats on your longest ride yet – that’s exciting!
Thank you, Sarah! 😀
I think you dressed perfectly “patriotically” for the 4th of July race!! I’m not one to go overboard on running ‘outfits’ myself.
Goodness, those zucchini noodles with tomato sauce looks divine! I love anything with tomato sauce 🙂
36 miles? Great job!! I’m really seriously eyeing a century myself. 55 is my longest and oh my how the shoulders and neck hurt after a while!!
Teresa recently posted…Red, Hot and Blue Independence Week!
I’m not sure I could have handled 14 more miles yesterday, but just like with training for a marathon, it’s all about building up gradually.
I ran a race on Tuesday and then spent the evening with family. We had a good time! I once did a late night ride in Chicago and I think that was 20 something miles. Or maybe 30? Cannot remember. Very casual, beginning at midnight and finishing around 4am. Went out for breakfast and then slept the rest of the morning and afternoon.

Was your bike ride an organized event or just something you and your friends did? Either way, it sounds really cool!
