Celebrating Independence Day!
Several of my friends and I started our Independence Day off with a bang by running in the Firecracker 5K. We had a blast as usual and I’m so glad I was able to join in on the fun!
Once home, I met with two clients and then chilled for the rest of the day. Bill and I stopped by a local frozen custard shop looking for custard that measured up to Nielsen’s in St. George, Utah. It was good, but let’s just say we still have more homework to do!
We brought our celebration to an end with a block party and neighborhood fireworks. When the sky opened up with pouring rain, we rushed into our neighbor’s garage. Fortunately, there were several young men up for the challenge of carrying all the loaded tables into the garage.
Eventually, the rain stopped and we were able to move back outside to cap the night with a pretty impressive fireworks display, but with the heavy muggy air, the smoke stayed low making them harder to see.
Getting a Pablo Fix
I needed to pick up my race packet in Reston and Bill needed to drop his bike off in Arlington for repairs, so while we were out and about on Wednesday after work, we met our son and his girlfriend for dinner at a little pizza place. Apparently, pizza is a good pre-race dinner for me so I’ll have to keep that in mind! Pablo was thrilled we stopped by and met with us with his usual wiggle-butt prancing!
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
As I mentioned in last week’s rundown, I really, really wanted to run the Firecracker 5K on Independence Day – I’d run it the past seven years and didn’t want to skip it this year. Since my angry SI joint had prevented me from running two weeks ago and hiking took over my life (in a great way) the following week, I headed out for an easy short run on Monday afternoon. Everything felt fine when I woke up on Tuesday so I signed up for the race!
Thursday’s Firecracker 5K didn’t disappoint. I started with my friends and despite the heat and humidity, I felt great so I did my own thing. I pushed harder than I have since early December and finished in 27:22 (8:49 pace) and just 14 seconds off third place out of 32 women in my age group. I’ll take it!
I ran a little later than my friends on Saturday morning since I’d trained a client at 6 AM. My tummy was off so I decided to keep it local in case I needed to rush home. As a result, I ran laps on my little half-mile loop in my immediate neighborhood.
While running those twelve laps, I picked up three old soggy newspapers that had been thrown in the street by the delivery person (between houses), two plastic cups, and various things from our fireworks display. There had already been a major cleanup of the area; I just let my obsessive-self pick up every little twist tie and wrapper that were more visible with the sun bouncing off. The long sparkler sticks were in a pile by the curb, most likely placed there and then forgotten by whoever did the fireworks cleanup in the dark.
As I’d round the circle, I’d dump my new haul onto our driveway and continue on my way. I normally designate my Thursday early morning runs as my trash pick up day so I can drop whatever I find in the nearest garbage toter that’s out by the curb waiting for pickup. I love doing my part to help keep our neighborhood streets clean.
Biking
I rode a walloping two miles on Sunday! When Bill got home from his ride, I hopped on my bike and rode to the Wine’ing Butcher with him to pick up chicken to grill for dinner. And prepared Brussels sprouts – their Brussels sprouts must be laced with crack because I cannot stop eating them!
Strength Training
It felt good to be back in the gym after a week of doing minimal strength training exercises!
Yoga
I thought I’d injured my back on Tuesday doing pyramid pose… Seriously, who does that? I felt a twinge and my back started spasming just as I twisted to go into the pose. I immediately lay on my back and did a few gentle stretches. Luckily, other than a mild awareness for the rest of the day and the next day, I was fine. 👍
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – Exploring Scenic Arizona and Southern Utah
- Friday – Catching Up Over Coffee: Getting Older, Unexpected Flowers, and a Surprise Book
I’m completely torn about what to work on next. I really want to get my Firecracker 5K recap posted, but I also want to share our hikes from vacation. But first, I’m going on a “mellow gravel” bike ride with Bill and some people from one of the local bike shops…
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- If you’re in the USA, how did you celebrate Independence Day?
- Do you like Brussels sprouts?
- Did you race on Independence Day or this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Great job on your Firecracker race! I did a new-to-me 8K, and it was fun…though very warm and humid (#july LOL). I get so frustrated with all the random trash I see…I keep finding candy wrappers EVERYWHERE along the parade route for our local parade. UGH. Thanks for linking, Deb 😉
Thanks, Kim! I can’t wait to read your 8K recap, too!
Congrats on your 5k and AG place! I ran our local Independence day race too–today. There’s a 5k and a 10k, but with all my running struggles, I opted for the 5k.
I’ve had SI joint issues on and off this year after dislocating it in January. I have some exercises that a PT gave me to do when it’s acting up and that seems to be helping. Pretty sure it’s because of my left hip being weaker than the right.
Thanks, Wendy! I think it was a good idea for you to drop down to the shorter race. Congrats on doing so well!
There was an SI joint exercise that I was doing preventatively that aggravated my shoulder so much I had to stop doing it. I couldn’t figure out why my shoulder was hurting so much and one day while doing the exercise it clicked. Within a week of stopping, my shoulder pain that had lasted six months went away!
Not sure why your comment ended up in the trash file… 🙁
Love brussel sprouts! Although to me they’re more a fall/winter veggie.
Congrats on a strong race! My race is 4 miles and I often wish it was a 5k (which would knock out the last really big shadeless hill at the end). We still had fun.
I think pizza is a great prerace dinner. 🙂 Or sushi . . . since mine was just 4 miles, I just had chicken and veggies, actually (with a little more carbs earlier in the day).
I’ve always heard that pizza is a great pre-race dinner, but think I’ve only tried it one other time (I was always afraid the cheese would do a number on my digestive tract). Anyway, I think it just might become my go-to thing now (along with a few homemade roasted sweet potato fries).
I don’t think I’ve ever run a 4-mile race. Yeah, if the end is in the sun and the rest isn’t, I’d want to change it to a 5K, too. 😀
I bet it felt terrific to get back out there with the MRTT crew! Looks like a fun one and glad you are feeling good this week

Thanks, Deborah, and yes, it felt great to get back out with my favorite peeps!
Pablo is such a cutie!
I often eat pizza or pasta the night before a race or long run and it never fails me. I guess either option must be the right amount of carbs for me.
I was always afraid the cheese might upset my GI tract on race morning so I’ve only tried pizza once before (I think). I’m all over it now – pizza for the win!
And guess what? Pablo is coming to stay with us for almost a week later this month! 😀
You did great on your race! I read a race recap on Thursday or Friday from someone else that ran that race too. I also did a race on the 4th and it was humid too. After the race I went to see my mom and we had lunch.
I enjoy pizza or sushi before a race too. Actually I could eat pizza every single day.

Oh, I bet it was Elizabeth from Racing Stripes whose Firecracker 5K recap you read. She killed her race and won her very competitive age group!
Mmmm, pizza…
July 4th is one holiday I have never raced on! It’s just too hot for me. That’s awesome you did so well on your race… and still got that picture! Well done! I love that your neighborhood had a block party and fireworks. We were laughing because the only “fireworks” we had were leftovers – a ton of sparklers, and snap pops. Oh, and some snakes, which are totally lame and of course they are useless at night.

The Firecracker 5K has become such a staple that I just wouldn’t seem like Independence Day without running it! This was the first time we’d had a block party on the 4th and I’m so happy my neighbors organized it.
Yay for getting out there and running a race again for the first time in months! Your time was great. Too bad you just missed medaling. We did some fireworks at my sister’s house in Cape Cod too, but they are very elaborate. My 2 youngest sons helped put them off and had a lot of fun. They lasted almost 30 minutes!
Your little granddog Pablo is so cute! I have to smile every time you post his photo!

Thanks, Laurie! Of all my blogging friends, I think you understand how frustrating these frequent injuries (dare I say age-related injuries) can be and how sweet it is to return to running.
I’m glad you had a fun Independence Day while visiting your sister and love that you had your family with you!
Sounds like you had a great 4th despite the rain.
That is so nice of you to pick up trash in your neighborhood!
Thanks, we did have fun!
Congrats on the race!! I was going to do a 5K in a few weeks but think I’ll skip (or maybe just go and party with everyone). Heat and humidity has been killing me this week lol
You could go cheer your friends on and then join them for the post-race festivities! The heat and humidity don’t seem to bother me as much as when I was younger. I thought the opposite was supposed to happen. LOL
Brussels sprouts are fine on occasion, but I never wake up in the middle of the night craving them! I had a rough 4th – my sister’s house burned after lightning struck a tree that landed on the house! It could have been worse.
I love that you are back in the races! And I really love the shot of you with the selfie stick above you. You are fierce and beautiful and that captured your essence!
Oh no, Eli, that’s terrible about your sister’s house. I hope everyone was able to get out safely.
And thank you! It’s nice to be back out there!
Way to get out there and run! I got in a super humid workout on the 4th and spent time with my friends. I didn’t race because it’s just too dang hot here for that personally lol. Way to clean up after the fireworks. Surprisingly, there weren’t any in our neighborhood. It was weird but I welcomed the night of silence!

I “hear” you on the fireworks noise. Someone was putting them off on a nearby street on the night of the 3rd when I was trying to get some sleep for my race, and I wasn’t happy. LOL
I don’t race on July 4 but there’s is a local one. Instead we go boating and then watch the fireworks on the lake.
I love Brussels sprouts.
Congrats on a great race.
Can’t wait to read the recap and about those hikes.
Boating and watching fireworks from the lake sounds like a wonderful way to enjoy Independence Day!
And thanks, it was great to be racing again!
I thought I left a comment here earlier this week…
Congrats on your great 5k! Isn’t it so much fun to run when everything comes together? We’re not done yet, are we?
You certainly did leave a comment earlier and I just found it in the trash. Not sure why it went into the trash file, but this comment made it through… Sometimes I question WordPress – they do the same thing to Deborah pretty regularly.
And to answer your question, no we’re not done yet! High five, sista!
