I really wish I’d taken screen shots each time I checked the weather forecast for Marion, Virginia this past week as I debated what to pack for the Hungry Mother 25K Trail Race on Saturday, but it’s safe to say that most of the time, the forecast looked very similar to this…
By Wednesday evening the forecast had changed to freezing rain (in my opinion, the scariest type of precipitation), and by Thursday night the forecast was calling for snow. For most of the week the forecast suggested that we would start with rain before it turned over to sleet, snow, or the dreaded freezing rain. All this was quite the contrast to what I envisioned while registering for the race – a beautiful spring day with a hint of green as trees began to bud and grass along the trail woke up and sprouted after several months of dormancy.
Other than refreshing WeatherBug on my phone, I had clients to train, final training runs to complete, and race clothes to pack.
Tuesday morning at 5:30, I met my running friends, exchanged hugs, and then headed off to do hill repeats while they opted to do an out and back run. Even though I’d separated from my friends, I saw plenty of other runners’ headlamps on the hill because it’s a popular training spot with one of the best (read steepest) hills in our area for repeats.
I decided to give myself two days rest before my race so I headed out for an easy run through our neighborhood on Wednesday. Thursday’s weather was supposed to be much more blustery and changing up my schedule would allow me to take advantage of beating the cold front, but just barely. As soon as I changed into my running clothes it started raining. I held back for about five minutes until the rain lightened up and then headed out. During my run I encountered rain, threatening clouds, puffy white clouds, sun, and wind. The cold front came in with force when I had about a mile left in my run and it practically blew me home.
I haven’t run any trails since Ragnar Trail Richmond two years ago so my Saucony trail shoes (affiliate link) have felt very little love. They are actually the most comfortable running shoes I’ve ever owned, but I save them for trails. I wore them a couple of weeks ago on a snowy run and decided to wear them again on Wednesday. I thought it might be smart to give them another spin before my race.
I went back and forth trying to decide what to wear for the race, and packed a few different options. Friday evening I settled on a plan A and B, and decided it would be a game-time decision on whether I’d wear shorts or capris…
Plan A
Plan B
We awoke on race morning to 45° and dry – the overnight rain had moved out and snow wasn’t expected to move in until later in the afternoon. By the time we left my mom’s house for the race, the temperature had dropped to 39° and was expected to drop as the day wore on. Temperatures hovered around 40° with a windchill of 35° for the entire race with the exception of our climb to the summit of Molly’s Knob where we could feel the temperature drop significantly.
My plan A outfit was perfect once I shed my lightweight jacket. There’s a really funny story associated with my jacket, but you’ll have to wait until I get my recap written later this week to hear about it. Let’s just say the gentleman wearing bib #77 is now my hero! I can’t wait to pull all of our pictures together and recap this race. It was so well done and it was delightful to be running a race back in my old stomping grounds in Southwest Virginia!
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Looking ahead to this coming week, I’m starting to work on my race recap and hope to get it posted later by Thursday.
In addition to what I mentioned above, here’s a complete run-down of my workouts (completed mostly in our home gym) from this past week…
- Questions:
- Do you stalk the weather before races?
- Has spring arrived where you live?
- Did you race this weekend? ~ Yes, my first race of the year was yesterday!
Have a great week!

I’m glad there was no precipitation of any kind for your race. I’ve been weather stalking for my race this weekend at the beach and although I know it could change several times before the weekend, it looks as if it will be 15 degrees warmer here at home than it will be at the beach. I guess I picked the wrong time to leave here…haha -M
I hope you have fantastic running weather this weekend! I usually intentionally don’t stalk the weather until just a couple of days out because it stresses me out; however, when I’m traveling to a race I tend to ignore my own rule.
Well, it was supposed to be my first race of the year, too, this weekend but when we DID get snow, yeah, no thank you. And it was just a 5k! I wasn’t registered so no DNS or DNF. Maybe next year.
I’m glad the weather at least didn’t precipitate all over you. 🙂 Looking forward to your recap!
Oh no, that’s a bummer! I’m hoping to get the recap posted either tomorrow or Friday.
Now my actual first race of the year has a forecast of cold rain. And wintry mix the night before. Lovely.
It’s hard enough to decide what to wear when you can make a “game day” decision. It’s so much harder when you have to pack in advance. Glad your A outfit worked out.
Thanks! I think having wind in the forecast is the hardest factor for deciding what to wear in a race…
I am glad that we both faired pretty well with the weather this weekend. I was quite nervous earlier in the week. Still I am ready for some spring like temps
We both got very lucky! 😀
Glad you dodged the precip for your race. Looking forward to your recap! Heck yeah, I’m a weather stalker!
Farmers and runners – the ultimate weather stalkers! I’m hoping to post my recap either tomorrow or Friday.
I definitely stalk the weather when I go for a race – this past year for the Tokyo marathon I brought 4 different outfits haha! Glad you had one that worked!
Packing for an international marathon must be really hard!
Weather stalking can be so frustrating, but it’s a necessary evil for runners, lol
Sound like you had an awesome race and I look forward to reading the recap!
It was a fantastic experience and made me wonder why I don’t run more trail races. I’m hoping to get my recap finished and posted either tomorrow or Friday.
Other than the tulips & daffodils starting to poke through, it is not spring here (yet). I’m a chronic weather stalker LOL
Finally, all of our flowering fruit trees are blooming. The parkways are gorgeous!
Isn’t it funny the how we envision those beautiful weather days as we peruse the race websites? I’m glad the weather was not as bad as forecasted and I look forward to your recap. And don’t ask how many weather apps I have on my phone. It’s embarrassing. Thanks for linking.
Weather apps – I have four! LOL
I’m hoping the weather at the Grand Tetons Half is perfect because it’s a race of a lifetime and the views will be spectacular.
I’m hoping to have my Hungry Mother 25K recap posted either tomorrow or Friday.
I ALWAYS stalk the weather before races. Heck, I stalk it before runs so ….. 😀 I’m glad you didn’t have to suffer through freezing rain during the race. That’s seriously the worst!! I was supposed to race this weekend but had to DNS. And then, with the weather – because I’ve gotten soft lately – I didn’t even get out for a long run. I just couldn’t bring myself to lace up and head out into the cold rain. I’m so over all the cold!
You and me both! If it’s a cold rain, I opt for running on my treadmill and I hate running on my treadmill. Who am I?
Looking forward to your recap – was glad the weather was better. You made great choices!! Hoping spring shows up any day now!
I’m hoping to get my recap finished and posted either tomorrow or Friday – stay tuned!
It sounds like we might skip right over spring and hit summer by Friday with temps in the 80’s…
Oh, that weather stalking brought back memories of me weather stalking for my first marathon ..remember the rain, rain and more rain!?! Ugh, so yes, I definitely weather stalk ..better to be prepared than surprised! Can’t wait to read the recap ..sounds like it was a great race!
It poured buckets on my first marathon, too!
I’m hoping to get my recap posted by tomorrow or Friday – I’ve got so many pictures to go through, but that’s a good thing!
I have been known to stalk the weather before a race, but so much can change within a week that I’ve found it to just add to my anxiety! The trail race looks absolutely beautiful, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I have a pair of trail shoes but I don’t love them and I’ve only worn them twice…sigh!
I agree completely, stalking the weather too far out just adds to the pre-race angst. What a bummer about your trail shoes.
[…] options. I didn’t find any and decided to trust my gut. I was glad to subsequently read Deb Runs’ post and see that even way more experienced runners struggle with this for weird weather […]
I was so glad to read this. This was my first race with questionable weather that I was traveling to and I was nervous. Glad it’s not just a newbie thing. Love your color palette.
No, it’s not just you… Packing for a race when the weather can change drastically isn’t an easy task; especially if you’re staying for a while and need other clothes to wear. I tend to overpack, so choosing what to take to the Grand Tetons Half will be another challenge since we’ll be flying.
And speaking of you packing for an out of town race, I’m heading over to read your Cherry Blossom Ten Miler recap now!
