A Wet Start to the Week
On Monday at around 7:20 AM, I arrived one of the gyms where I work just as the sky opening up to a torrential downpour as I pulled into the gym parking lot. I considered waiting it out in my car until I finally gave up and made a mad dash into the clubhouse.
Once inside the gym, I discovered standing water in several places around the cardio equipment.
Despite a flooded gym, we fared much better than in Reston and closer in to DC. This is the second time in eight years that this particular parking lot near the Metro has flooded to this extent. It runs right along the W&OD Trail and the Cruisers used to occasionally park there when we’d meet in Reston for our run. Note that a four lane road runs between the parking lot and the grass in the foreground.

Back to the Gym
Once the water damage at the gym was assessed, it was determined that it needed to be closed so more extensive repairs could be completed. From around 10 AM on Monday until 3 PM on Friday, the gym remained closed. Luckily, I was able to move most of those clients to my home gym for the week so they didn’t miss their workouts.
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
Because of my adjusted gym schedule, I was able to complete both of my weekday runs in the daylight and didn’t have to get up at such a crazy hour – I slept until 5 AM four mornings and even slept until 6:30 on Wednesday!
I’d hoped to run with a friend on Saturday morning, but she had to cancel Friday evening when she got sick. I waited until 7:30 AM to head out and mostly stayed on the shaded trail in our neighborhood. I took it easy and had a great run.
Biking
On Sunday, I joined Bill for my first group gravel ride sponsored by Bicycles and Coffee in Purcellville, VA. They referred to the 16-miler as a mellow ride so it seemed like a great place for me to start.
According to my Garmin (affiliate link), we had 1,024 feet of elevation gain on our 16.27-mile ride. My average speed was 11.8 MPH – I noticed my speed as slow as 5 MPH on a couple of the really steep climbs, but only as fast as the low 20’s on my descents. I’m extremely cautious with my speed on gravel after wiping out many times as a child on the gravel roads on the farm. Potholes and washboards don’t help with my confidence level on gravel either.
After posting a picture and video to Instagram, several people commented about riding on gravel. My Salsa Journeyman is considered an all-road bike (gravel and light touring) which is exactly what I was looking for in a bike when I upgraded last summer.
Strength Training
As always, I’m happy to be so consistent with lifting. I’m sure my body thanks me, especially as I get older.
Yoga
After last week, I was a little more cautious this week with triangle pose. LOL
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – My First Race in Over Six Months and Celebrating Independence Day
- Tuesday – Mountain Biking at Hurricane Cliffs in Virgin, Utah
Looking ahead to this coming week, I’ve got my Firecracker 5K recap ready to post on Tuesday. I’m not sure if I’ll get a chance to work on anything new since I’ll be working a shortened week and packing to go visit my mom for the weekend and all of the following week!
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- Have you tried gravel riding? ~ Bill has really been enjoying it the last couple of years and was excited to get me to try it!
- Of running, biking, strength training, and yoga, which is your favorite type of exercise?
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I smiled when I saw that your “sleeping in” was 5:30. It was a crazy day with the flooding and really scary. Looks like a solid week for you thanks for linking up!

HaHa! So far this week, sleeping in has only been until 5 AM, but tomorrow I’m heading to visit my mom for a week and there may be some real sleeping in in my future! 😉
Whoa! That rain was something fierce. I am happy that the damage wasn’t too extensive and that the gym was able to reopen at the end of the week.
Great job on your workouts this week! I would have to say that my favorite workout is strength training just because there are so many different variations.
Yes, the rain was crazy and we were lucky not to have any damage at our home.
I’d be fearful of gravel road biking, too! I’m still working on my smooth bike trail technique LOL Wow, that’s a lot of flooding!
LOL, I’m still working on all of my biking skills as well. 😉
We had so much rain in June that I was really starting to consider building an ark! Just kidding, but it was bad. The weather has been really crazy this year! Glad you were able to get everything in.
I’ve never tried gravel riding. I have a road bike, so I don’t think that would work out so well for m!
No, I don’t think your road bike would do too well on gravel. You’d probably like the challenge of gravel riding, though!
We had a lot of rain but lately, not so much. It has been warm and sunny.
Not a fan of biking. I try to squeeze in running…occasionally a walk or a trip to the gym to use the arm machines. Running is my jam though.
I had a 5k on Saturday…not a great one on my part but glad to have done it.

I wasn’t a fan of biking for years, but I’ve really started enjoying it lately. Looking forward to reading about your 5K.
Yikes! Glad it wasn’t your gym that flooded.
I don’t like yoga, but I’m trying to like it. I squeeze in strength training when I can, but running is my primary.
My dream for my tiny apartment is to have room for a small weights/yoga area, but there just isn’t
Thanks, Cari! We were lucky not to have any damage. I’m always worried about the huge trees in our back yard coming down when we have a lot of rain and wind. My mom just lost a huge weeping willow. 🙁
wow the rain was really unbelievable! did the equipment get ruined at the gym?
seems you had a really good week of workouts! I laughed at sleeping in until 6:30 but I know you have to usually get up much earlier.
I really don’t know what gravel riding is to be honest! So I can’t say I’ve done that!
My favorite type of exercise these days is probably biking and then running. I love strength training too. I’m not feeling mentally great with my running at the moment but maybe in a few weeks it will go up to the top spot again. I actually tried yoga a few weeks ago for the first time since probably the early 90’s! And I didn’t hate it, so there is hope for me, haha!
No racing for me until August when I have the Helsinki Half Marathon. Fingers crossed.
I think so – three pieces of equipment had signs on them saying they were out of order when the gym reopened. 🙁
Gravel riding is simply riding on gravel roads as opposed to paved. We have quite a few gravel roads in western Loudoun County even though it’s a suburb of DC. Traction isn’t as good so it’s a lot more adventuresome. 🙂
OMG that rain and water! That is so scary and I’m glad you’re ok and you didn’t have any damage to your property – Wow!!
Also glad you were able to “sleep in” until 6:30 – that’s pretty much my sleep-in time too so I feel you! Love the pic of your bike and the gravel ride – just awesome!!

Thanks, Allie! We had another huge rain storm yesterday while I was at the gym. The managers and operations people came running in to see if the “fix” held! LOL And it did!
Wow! That flooding! I’m glad everything is okay now and that you didn’t have to cancel most of your clients.
