~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…
It’s time again to join in on the fun and clear my conscious of recent running, biking, fitness, and nutrition related faux pas. I know I’ll feel better when I’m done!
I runfess: We were supposed to go to the Outer Banks for a couple of weeks, leaving on the Friday that Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina. Needless to say, we didn’t leave that day and for a variety of reasons we ended up not going at all. As disappointed as I was not to get away for some R&R, I was relieved to not have to base my run times on the tide in order to avoid running in deep and loose sand.
I runfess: I usually wear my eyeglasses when I run at zero dark thirty; however, because I didn’t grow up wearing glasses, I feel weird being photographed with them on (I don’t think I look like myself). Usually, I take my eyeglasses off, especially for running pictures. Here’s one of the rare pics I’ve posted wearing my glasses while running.
I runfess: When I run later in the day, I wear my contacts (or skip them and go blurry eyed) because I need to wear my sunglasses. Sometimes, due to how dry my left eye can get as I become dehydrated, I’ll just wear my right contact. I can see quite well with it since it’s multifocal, but I don’t see as well as when I’m wearing both contacts or my glasses. Last Saturday, after our run, Tracy and I were looking at pictures she’d just taken with her phone and I needed to be able to see better. I pulled out my contact so I could put on my glasses and laid it on the carpet of my car. Tracy had a look of horror and asked if I was going to put it back in my eye. I assured her that I wear disposables and would throw it in the trash when I got home.
I runfess: After over indulging in M&M at my mom’s house in July, I’ve been very carefully watching what I’m eating and have lost those few extra pesky pounds I gained, and I’m back where I should be. In the process, I’ve started paying attention to serving sizes and was perhaps a little too excited to see that one serving of ginger snaps is six cookies!
I runfess: I still haven’t made anything from my Run Fast. Eat Slow (affiliate link) cookbook by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky; and I’m going to keep runfessing this until I embarrass myself to the point of making something… anything!
I runfess: I’m enjoying biking more and more and wonder what the 45-year old Runner Girl Deb would think! Let me explain – the Cruisers and I had more than our share of experiences with extremely rude bikers who thought they owned the trail; and as a result, we declared to never venture to the dark side.
I bikefess: I haven’t ridden my bike this week because of the crappy weather, but when I had the opportunity, I didn’t ride my inside spin cycle either.
I bikefess: I’m not sure why there’s a difference between Chamois Butt’r (affiliate link) and Chamois Butt’r Her (affiliate link) and I’m afraid to ask. The guy at the bike store said that perhaps the girls version has a nicer fragrance, but I think I saw him blush a little as he said tried to explain it.
There you have it, my most recent runfessions. Ahhh yes, it feels good to get another set off of my chest. See you next month in the runfessional.
- Questions:
- Do you wear eyeglasses or contacts? If so, which do you wear when you run?
- Biking ladies, talk to me about butt butter!
- What are your runfessions?

After our recent trip to Italy, I runfess I am carrying a few extra pounds. I am now watching what I eat very carefully in order to get rid of them.
A friend got me the “Run Fast Eat Slow” book as a gift, and I haven’t made anything from it yet, either. Maybe we can encourage each other.
One of my problems is that I get the cookbook out to remind me to flip through it, but then when I tidy up the kitchen, I put it back away – out of sight out of mind.
I think the Chamois creams are exactly the same-I’ve bought both. They sure do help though
I found a video about chamois cream that I’ll be sharing on our coffee date. 😉
I think my ‘Her says it’s pH balanced for …. women but either is fine to use anywhere.;-) I hope being a runner and a cyclist makes me more considerate all around, but I know I’m not perfect.
Yeah, I noticed that after digging around a little more. Also, I found a video about applying chamois cream that I’ll be sharing on our coffee date.
I’m intrigued!
Coco, go back and read the two comments made by Steve Mathews, president of Chamois Butt’r. He explains the difference and why the Her version is the same price and quantity as the original, and says that there’s a coconut version coming out next month. It’s a very interesting background on the product!
I can’t wear my glasses for much but sitting and reading like I am now! The prescription is so strong that I get headaches from eyestrain. I know I can’t run in them. I have hard contacts, so I don’t get that blur like soft wearers get.
I have some HooHah Ride Glide that I like. But I’ve used both Chamois But’rs and I haven’t noticed a difference between the 2. PS There’s no scent….
I just tried the Her butt’r today, and you’re right, there’s no scent. Check out the two comments from the president of Chamois Butt’r below. They’re very informative!
We do not use any fragrances or coloring in any of our products (the dermatologist we receive input from advises us that much of the dermatological problems he sees with skin care products is due to unnecessary fragrances and coloring). Most of our products have some smell, but it is very minor and due only to the functional ingredients we use. Many people report noticing a mild lavender fragrance with the Her’, but that is due to the lavender oil we use, which we don’t include for the fragrance. I hope that helps, Steve Mathews, FPresident and Founder, Chamois Butt’r
That’s great news about the TJ’s Ginger Snaps. They are so yummy!
I always wear prescription sunglasses when I’m running. That way I can still see but don’t have to wear my regular glasses if I don’t want to.
Prescription sunglasses seem like a really good idea. Good thinking!
I think the “her” versions of stuff like Chamois Butter and Body Glide are just marketing ploys. I compared the ingredients on Body Glide and they’re the same. I made one recipe from RFES. My life is complete. Haha! Thanks for linking!
Since writing my post, I’ve learned that the Her chamois cream has the right ph balance for girl parts…
LOL on your life being complete! I guess I need to hustle and make one of the recipes in the cookbook, too! 😉
Deb, your question about the difference between Chamois Butt’r (Original) and Chamois Butt’r Her’ came up on my social media feed, and I thought I would chime in. The big difference is that Chamois Butt’r Her’ is pH balanced for women, with a lower pH, slightly more acidic, and the pH is less different for women than the Chamois Butt’r Original. That said, Chamois Butt’r Original is and has been just fine for both men and women for 25 years (originated in 1993). In more recent years, a lot of our competitors were coming out with women specific products, at least they were branded women specific (many were made with the same ingredients list as their men’s product, and they were made in a smaller package, many times pink, and they cost more – “shrink and pink” in the advertising world). My wife Mitzi Mathews is a Family Practice and Sports Medicine MD, and she said if we were going to make a women’s specific product, it would be made with some legitimate benefits, it would be the same price as our men’s product, and no way were going to shrink and pink it!
Thanks so much, Steve, for your feedback! And thank Mitzi for her input on keeping the product price equal to the “men’s” version! I ordered a tube of “Her” yesterday from Amazon and it’s to be delivered tomorrow, just in time for my Sunday long ride. I’ll let you know what I think after I’ve had a chance to try it.
Thanks for your quick reply, touch base with me anytime to give me feedback.
Sorry, but I’m so talkative it takes 2 posts. The majority of women do not have problems with many products down in their nether regions, but some women are very sensitive to slight changes in pH. With Chamois Butt’r Her’, making the product more acidic, has benefitted women who are very sensitive to some skin care products. We have heard from our customers that Chamois Butt’r Her’ is more gentle for sensitive skin, and some women who have had problems using other chamois creams, do very well with Her’. The other ingredient differences from the Chamois Butt’r Original is that we used Shea Butter, Lavender and Green Tea Leaf Extract, all of which provide some additional, but very gentle beneficial properties that are not in the Chamois Butt’r Original. The long and short of it, is we currently offer 3 versions of Chamois Butt’r. The Her’ was developed to be more gentle to sensitive skin, or to less likely throw off a woman’s own pH in the perineal area. We have had a lot of very positive response to Chamois Butt’r Her’, but it comes down to personal preference whether you prefer the Original, the Eurostyle or the Her’ product. We also have many men who prefer the Chamois Butt’r Her’. If that is not enough, in Oct 2018, we are releasing our new Chamois Butt’r Coconut, for those who have requested a natural oil version of Chamois Butt’r. Thank you for your patience with my long explanation, please feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions, via http://www.chamoisbuttr.com. I have prescription reading glasses, but that’s it (thus far). I have never had to wear glasses other than to see for distance (like the overhead projector back in the day)…but now I’m getting progressively more far-sighted and need some “assistance” for up-close visuals LOL I’ll probably eventually be in bifocals….and that will be weird. My eyes are extremely sensitive so contacts will never be a possibility for me.
I was 20/20 until I hit my early 40’s and then suddenly my arms were too short to hold what I was reading clearly so I had to get reading glasses. LOL Eventually, my distance vision had to be corrected and multi-focal contacts and progressive glasses were the solution. #oldpersonproblems 😉
I wear contacts. I almost never run in glasses (just sunglasses) — I did Friday, because it was an early morning treadmill run & I’d be wearing contacts too long if I’d put them in that early — HATE running in glasses!
I used to run very early in nothing, but for me that’s really a bad idea. I definitely can’t see much without something.
Sorry about the missed vacation.
Thanks, Judy. We were bummed, but we certainly could have gone down to the beach for a shorter time, just chose against it…
I don’t like being photographed with my glasses either …like you, I just don’t feel like I look ‘normal’. I laughed at you putting your contact on the carpet of your car…. I have put mine in so many places, outside of my eyes, that I can’t even recall them all. That’s the beauty of disposables!
I know, right? Even though for the past year I’ve worn my eyeglasses more than my contacts, I still don’t feel that I look like “me.”
So I just found this in my inbox. Whoops
It’s funny how we see ourselves with/out glasses. I got mine at 17 and although it’s more than half my life, I go back and forth on whether i’m me without my glasses. Getting transition lenses was huge help for running especally in dawn winter races and in case of a Florida half, pre dawn. Actually it was running “blind” in the latter that tipped it. I’d gear checked my glasses and wore sunglasses throughout, but it never got sunny enough to need them. It’s weird for me to see photos when I don’t wear them (usually running)
That’s an interesting perspective. I seem to be wearing my glasses more and my contacts less so I’m finally getting used to seeing myself in glasses. 😎
