~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…
I runfess: I was quite the sight at the track on Tuesday morning. I have the most basic Garmin that isn’t even made any more. Since my basic Garmin can’t track my total miles run while also giving me splits of each interval, I carried a kitchen timer to track my time for each 400 repeat. I then wrote that 400 time down on my pad of paper laying on the side of the track. Yep, I was embracing old school technology!
I runfess: I might have ordered a new Garmin Forerunner 230 (affiliate link) even though my old one still works, just not to the capacity I need want.
I runfess: That after all that talk last week about wanting to see a bear while visiting my mom, I just might be a chicken at heart. There have also been bear sightings in my little safety net of suburbia this past week, and yesterday morning I drove to meet my friends for our tempo run rather than running solo through the pre-dawn woods as I’d originally planned. Just to be safe, I ordered a new police strength pepper spray (affiliate link) to replace my old one that I’m afraid might have outlived its life expectancy.
No bears were sighted on our run, but we did see an albino skunk. He really wasn’t truly albino, just solid white except for little black feet. He ran right across the trail in front of us causing us to abruptly halt our run until he was safely out of sight in the brush on the other side.
I runfess: I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve worn my current running shoes to the point that I’m starting to feel a little pain in my right knee. I desperately need to replace them so I’m heading to the running store today after work to buy a new pair. I’m torn between these Brooks Glycerine 15 (affiliate link) – a newer version of my current running shoes, these Nikes Air Zoom Pegasus 34 (affiliate link) – a newer version of my current shoes I wear when training clients, and these Saucony Triumph (affiliate link) – a newer version of a shoe I used to wear for work. I can’t wait to try them on and see which pair I like the best.
I runfess: I went on a 36-mile bike ride with a Cruiser friend a few weeks ago and this runner loved it! I’m considering adding a Cruiser Sunday morning ride to our calendar. The Deb from ten years ago would be horrified at the thought!
I runfess: I still have three pairs of Moving Comfort running shorts that I bought over ten years ago. Not only are they too big, but the elastic in the legs of the panty liners had gotten so old that it turned into a sticky gel-like substance leaving a gooey residue on my legs. I fixed it by cutting off the elastic edges, leaving me with breezy liners under my shorts. There’s no way I can part with these beloved shorts, so fortunately for my running friends, those shorts have been relegated to my wear-only-at-home shelf.
Ahhh yes, it feels good to get another set of runfessions off of my chest. See you next month in the runfessional.
- Questions:
- How often do you change your running shoes?
- Do you carry pepper spray when running or hiking?
- Do you use a GPS watch for running, walking, or biking? If so, which one do you have?
- What are your runfessions?

Love the image of that track kitchen timer! When I do intervals on the mill I hop off and write them down and then those scaps of paper fly around the pain cave forever. Somwhow my pepper spray made it out of my fuel belt and now I couldn’t tell you where it is. My bad. Thanks for linking!

Good to hear I’m not the only one who jots down my interval times on a piece of paper!
I made the move to the Garmin 230 last fall and I haven’t looked back! You’ll love it!
I’d ditch those shorts…but that’s just me…I love new gear!

Good to hear about the Garmin! Two of my three friends yesterday morning were wearing the Garmin 230 and they told me I would love it, too.
HaHa, I wear those old running shorts more as loungewear than anything else. Believe me, I love new running clothes as much as anyone else!
I have the Garmin 10 and love it! My husband always jokes how “old school” I am. I look forward to getting new running shoes, so I track my mileage pretty closely. Saucony’s are my favorite! I bought pepper spray, but never carry it with me. A lot of good that does!!
The Garmin 10 battery dies after only four hours so it dies before I finish my long bike rides, especially if we stop to take breaks and pictures. One of the things I like about the 230 is that you can switch it to biking mode so it reads out in MPH rather thank MPM. Also, I’m obviously very happy about the way it will track my interval workouts. 🙂
Carry your pepper spray! you never know when it just might be the smartest thing you brought along that day.
I’ve been enjoying biking more and more lately myself it’s so much more enjoyable in the heat. Love your old school tracking!

Glad to hear that you updated your Garmin! I’m sure you will enjoy running with it soon!

Yes, I can’t wait for it to arrive!
How often do you change your running shoes?
-Not often enough…usually not until I start feeling some sort of pain ; (
Do you carry pepper spray when running or hiking?
-A stick, a pocket knife or so.etimes even a rock. Better safe than sorry.
Do you use a GPS watch for running, walking, or biking? If so, which one do you have?
– always connected to some kind of device 🙁
My goodness, aren’t we all connected to some sort of device these days? 🙁
I embrace old-school practices! I did a track workout back in the spring…and I wanted to track total miles, but also record splits (200’s), so I noted the “stop” times on a piece of paper LOL I know there’s a setting (on my Garmin) to do it on the spot, but I didn’t have the owners manual with me and I’m too tech-dumb to push a few buttons and figure things out
Kimberly Hatting recently posted…What’s there to Runfess?
I’m glad to see that I’m not alone! 😉
Bears…Oh my! I can’t imagine getting close enough to pepper spray a bear!

I can’t either, but if I’m that close I want to have pepper spray or something to deter him!
Love it! As much as I love technology, there are still some areas of life I’m still holding on to my ‘old school’ ways. I always run and bike with pepper spray if I run any place other than the neighborhood. To be honest though, it’s the two legged animals (humans) I’m more concerned about.
When my old Garmin died several years ago, I replaced it with a TomTom Runner because it was under $100 and still did everything I needed it to do, intervals included. It’s so basic and easy for these 50 years old eyes to see!
P.S. I’m loving cycling these days as well! It’s really a great workout and fun!
