On the Road to Recovery
After a follow up appointment with my doctor on Tuesday, we determined that I felt enough better that I could skip the second spinal injection and start physical therapy immediately.
I opted to go with a new-to-me physical therapist who specializes in spines and had my first session on Thursday. Figuring out how to get into the office was the hardest part!
I love my new PT Ashley and her approach to my rehab. She’s got me working hard and I’m hoping to see quick results. She has me doing massive amounts of back extensions (bending backward from the waist) and staying away from any type of flexion (bending forward from the waist) or twisting.
Every two hours I have to do 20 cobra type exercises while not bracing my core – it’s all about bending my spine backwards. Can I just tell you how sore my triceps are from four days of lifting the front half of my body off the floor approximately 450 times?
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
Still no running, but I did make it clear to my PT that my goal is to get back to running as soon as possible. 😉
Biking
I fit in four rides on my spin bike (affiliate link) for a total of 52 miles this week. Two of those rides started well before 5 AM and as my cardio ramps back up, my time spent sleeping decreases.
Strength Training
Monday and Wednesday’s strength training sessions were pretty normal, but I skipped Friday’s after my 7 AM workout with my PT. She also told me to hold off lifting on Monday until after we meet Monday afternoon. We’re plan to go over what exercises I do, and if necessary, she might have me eliminate some of them that might be hindering my recovery.
Yoga
After fitting two yoga sessions into my week, it ends up that some of the yoga and stretching that I was doing wasn’t necessarily helping with my recovery so I plan to suspend yoga until I get the all clear from my PT.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – On the Road to Recovery? Fingers Crossed!
- Friday – Catching Up Over Coffee: Purging, Mega Guac, and Redecorating
Looking ahead to this coming week, I’m working on another installment of Ask Coach Deb and hope to also finish up a post about hydration. I know that I’ve mentioned this the last two weeks, but since I still haven’t gotten to it, both are still on my to do list…
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed either outside or in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- • Sushi – yay or nay? ~ Nay for me, but the rest of the family loves it.
- • Do you care who wins the Super Bowl?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I am glad to hear that you did not need another injection. I hope this new PT can get you back to running soon. Sore arms are always a nice bonus. I rarely get sore anymore. I should remember to talk to you about that next time I see you

Thanks so much!
All the sushi all the time. As I’ve started running more I’ve re integrated it on Saturdays
Don’t care who wins, which makes it all the more fun.
Glad your triceps sore for a goo dreason

I do remember you talking about your love for sushi. At least I have tried it… I just don’t care for it. I order hibachi grilled food when we go to that restaurant so it’s a win all the way around!
Yep. Even though I adore sushi I’ll sometimes go for a salmon teriyaki dish at the same place. Or katsudon.

Continued prayers for healing!!!
Thanks, Michelle!
I’m a big NAY on sushi LOL Gosh, I hope this new PT has you back to running soon! I should do more of those cow poses…my back has been so wonky lately (I blame the shoveling).
Me, too, on the running again soon! Hope your back starts feeling better as well. Hopefully, it was only the excessive shoveling and will go away on its own.
I’m so glad you and your PT have clicked and are on the same page. That’s huge. I really didn’t have a big interest in the big game last night.I went to bed after the halftime show LOL.
Sushi? Yay! I love it.
I just got out of another session with my PT and I really like what she’s doing. She has such a different approach from my previous PT that I saw last year for the same thing. He focused on dry needling and electrical stimulation and she’s focusing totally on getting me stronger in the hips/core to help support my spine.
Same here, I went to bed right after the halftime show because I had to get up super early this morning.
I’m kinda curious what the reasoning behind not engaging your core was in cobra? Just want to learn, is all, I would’ve thought that would be helpful. I can understand trying to minimize flexion.
Sushi, YAY!!!!! Love it. Didn’t even watch the Super Bowl, but I never do.
The goal for me while doing this particular exercise is to increase the mobility of my spine by getting as much extension as possible. Engaging my core prohibits that; however, when I return to doing cobra as part of a yoga routine, I’ll go back to engaging my core. It was hard for me to learn because I’m so used to keeping a strong core.
I’ve missed quite a lot 🙁 didn’t realise you had back issues again. SI joint? we call those MacKenzie’s – Ron does these almost every day and I had to do them as well a couple of years ago when I was having issues. I’m so sorry you are “injured” again 🙁
yes to sushi!!
There’s probably a good reason you call those MacKenzies. The PT clinic I’m going to is certified by the McKenzie Institute International which is renowned for its successful spine and extremity care (from their website). It’s a bulge at L5-S1 that’s acting up this time… I may be joining Ron with continuing to do those cobras/McKenzies as a daily exercise.
Sushi? Solid NO. Luckily no one in my family eats it. We did watch the Super Bowl even though we don’t ever watch football. We had fun with it. My husband and I ended up picking the 49ers to win, and the kids picked the Chiefs. I really liked the half time show too!

I’m a solid no on sushi as well; however, the rest of my family loves it! Luckily for me, their favorite sushi place has amazing hibachi cooked choices (I get the shrimp and scallops – yum!).
We are major college football nuts, but don’t follow the NFL as closely except for watching our local team (the Redskins). Once the playoffs start, though, we follow along and always look forward to the Super Bowl. I loved the halftime show as well, and then went to bed right after it because I had early clients the next morning.
Yes to sushi. It’s been a while since I’ve eaten it so now I am craving it. I did watch the game but my favorite part was the halftime show. Good news on now getting the spinal injection!
