Hoping to Get Some Answers
On Friday I’ll finally have my long awaited appointment with my spine doctor and will hopefully get some answers on why my sciatic nerve has been acting up causing both a sharp pain in my right glute and my right foot to go numb. More importantly, I hope to find out what I can do to correct the problem. I suspect that physical therapy will be in my near future and I welcome that prospect!
And Now on to a Run-down of My Week’s Workouts…
Running
My friends and I had considered meeting on Sunday morning at 8 for a run (walk for me) on the W&OD Trail, but we all canceled when we woke up to streets that hadn’t been plowed or had been plowed at 3 AM and had several inches of fresh snow on top (we ended up with 10.5 inches). We decided it safest to stay home and run locally. Unfortunately, the planned Starbucks hangout after our run was canceled as well…
Biking
I hopped on my bike on Monday afternoon and promised myself that I’d start replacing my early morning runs with biking. I don’t know about you, but for me it’s so much harder to get excited about getting up at 4:30 AM to ride my bike in my basement as opposed to going outside for a run even though I stay on a boring half mile loop in my neighborhood during those super early solo runs. I’m mentioning this because neither Tuesday’s nor Thursday’s ride happened…
Saturday; however, I mustered up the motivation to complete my twenty mile ride while my husband was out riding on the partially snow-covered W&OD Trail. He has a bike with fatter tires than mine so he’s better prepared, but even so, I don’t think my fingers would stay warm on my bike in temps under 50°.
Strength Training
I got in three solid weight lifting sessions this week and continued to focus on my core.
Yoga
I continued this week focusing on yoga poses and stretches that promote healing of the areas causing pressure on the sciatic nerve. I’m choosing moves based on what my physical therapist had me do when I first had problems and things I’m finding on the internet. Who knows, I may be completely off track with what I’m doing, but none of the stretches should be hurting anything.
I’m really looking forward to hopefully getting started on physical therapy after seeing my doctor this Friday and putting this running injury behind me!
Last Week on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – Reassessing My Strength Training Workouts and Just Whining in General
- Tuesday – 2019 New Day New Year 5K Race Recap
Looking ahead to this coming week…
- Thursday – I’ll be joining Marcia for my current set of Runfessions.
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- If you’ve had physical therapy, did you find it helped?
- Have you had snow this week? ~ We had snow twice earlier in the week and then it rained much of yesterday. Today is windy and tomorrow it’s supposed to be really, really cold!
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s a wrap… Have a great week!

Deb, so sorry to hear that your pain hasn’t improved. Mine is back after the trail race I did yesterday too. Unfortunately, PT did not help at all. I am going to begin doing some stretches and yoga I found online too. I hope by the spring both you and I will be back on track again!

Thanks, Laurie, and yes, I hope we’re both back and running pain-free in no time at all!
I’ve had great experiences with physical therapy. I’ve had good physical therapists and am pretty good about doing your homework, I hope you find an answer soon. I was worried that yoga aggravated something in my hip/glutes/ITB so I took 2 weeks off just in case. It probably was just a coincidence, but you never know.
I’ve had great results with physical therapy as well and that’s why I’m very hopeful and want to get started as soon as possible. I hope your little pain goes away quickly!
Yes I would have a much harder time getting excited to bike in my basement vs getting outside w my group. Interesting that biking does not bother your back at all? Hope you get news from your DR. I can only imagine how frustrated you are!
Right at first biking bothered me, but it hasn’t these last two weeks and running still does… 🙁
We had some piddly snow this week, but nothing like you did. And we were in the rain zone today
Hope your Friday appt gives you some answers

It rained here all afternoon yesterday and last night so it washed away a lot of our snow, and now the temps are dropping drastically.
I think you’ll enjoy and learn a lot in PT. I did. I went for three months. Sadly, it may be in my future again too. Great job with the indoor ride. There were times in my life when I was motivated to ride my bike multiple times a week before work in the winter (no snow). I don’t know how I did it. Now, I can’t even convince myself to hop on the trainer. Thanks for linking!
I had such great results with physical therapy back in 2012 when I first hurt my back. I’m hoping for equally good results this time around.
My bike is so sad because i haven’t ridden all winter. I really need to get her on the trainer but the trainer and the treadmill seem one in the same for me. Hoping you get some answers at the PT!

Thanks! It’s tough doing cardio inside!
Having not done much biking, I’d have to concur that a 4:30 wake-up would be tough with an indoor bike awaiting me LOL It’s supposed to be extremely cold this week (single digits for the highs), so I’m looking at (probably) lots of indoor action in the wee hours.
It’s gonna be cold here this week, but not that cold! Stay warm even if it does mean those dreaded indoor cardio sessions.
I am such a fair weather cyclist! It really has to be in the 60s for me to even consider it.
I’m looking forward to hearing what you find out on Friday. I’m sure there will be an MRI in your future (or did you already have one?). I had a great experience with my PT when I dislocated my SI joint a few weeks ago. You just need to find one who works with athletes.
No, I haven’t had an MRI since my initial injury in 2012 so I’m suspecting that as well. I have a great PT who got me through my last back injury/sciatica pain episode. I’m hoping he can work his magic again!
I had PT for an Achilles problem and it helped.
Hope you get answers and it is fixable.
We got lots of snow. And wind. And sub zero temps.
Hate it.
Thanks, Darlene!
Praying you get some answers soon!! Pain is sure no fun!! Hugs!!
Thanks, Michelle!
You’re so welcome!!
you had a good week it seems, did what you could despite snow and having to succumb to the bike at 4:30 am!
I hope you get some clear answers Friday! On Thursday I see the anesthesiologist who will hopefully ok me for my foot surgery (and hopefully hear asap when the actual date is…)
I’ve been with various physios for so long now, it’s not even funny. currently with a foot/ankle specialist who is helping me with a bit of tendonitis caused from not wearing my insoles. I see another physio for dry needling when I have issues with lower back/ glute/ hamstring. I saw a sports specific physio to help me with my core and running form. I saw a manual therapist when i first had issues with my foot tingling (because he thought it was coming from my back). So yeah. Lots of PT.

It will be great for you to finally get that foot issue behind you. Good luck!
