My life growing up in out in the country on a dairy farm was pretty fabulous and my life today in suburbia isn’t too shabby; however, a tiny part of me has always wished Bill and I had chosen to live in the city instead of the suburbs of Denver when we had the chance. Anytime we visit Chicago, I get to live that fantasy city life, even if only for a week at at time. This past week we snagged a short-term rental on the 29th floor of our son and daughter-in-law’s building and our view of the Chicago River, the Wrigley building, and Michigan Avenue never got old.
While in Chicago, Bill and I celebrated our son’s MBA graduation from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business where he graduated with honors. We arrived early to enjoy several relaxing days before the rest of the family arrived for the weekend. Once everyone was in town we had a packed weekend of delicious food, fun, and all around celebration.
Our time in Chicago flew by and my head is still spinning as I try to remember all that we did. I have a slew of pictures on my iPhone and GoPro to look through, and I’m sure I’ll be sharing my favorites throughout the week on Instagram and on Thursday or Friday in a vacation recap.
The highlights of our trip, besides the graduation festivities, included visiting the Bean, going to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, chilling at the Tiki Hut along the Chicago River, and of course running along Lake Michigan on the Lakefront Trail.
As you can see, I spent a lot of time walking while in the city. I only recorded the sustained walks when I wore my Garmin or remembered to check the mileage on my Fitbit just before and after a long walk. Even though there was a really nice gym in our building, I didn’t make it up for a workout and instead did a few exercises in our apartment.
Looking ahead to this week, I’ll post a full recap of our trip on Thursday or Friday; and in case you missed it, on Wednesday I posted Seven Tips For Keeping A Positive Mindset On Aging as part of my monthly Wednesday Word linkup.

I’m linking up with Holly at HoHo Runs and Tricia from MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap. Be sure to check out not only the hosts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Looks like you had an awesome time in Chicago – congrats on your son! It’s one of my favorite cities and I’m going there for a conference in 2 weeks – I can’t wait!
I always try to get in some form of exercise while on vacation, especially on cruises. I don’t exactly eat “clean” on vacation, so exercise helps to balance out all the food, haha.
Thanks for linking up for the Weekly Wrap!

Have fun at your conference! There’s an annual fitness conference in Chicago that I attended in October. It was great!
Congrats to you and your son! You must be so proud. What are his plans now?
I’m so sorry we couldn’t connect this week. Life is too busy. It’s just wrong!

Thank you, we are so proud of our son’s many accomplishments while at Booth! He and our daughter-in-law are moving to New Jersey where he’ll be working for one of the large consulting firms and she’ll continue to teach.
I completely understand about your busy schedule. Life gets so busy and I’m be back in the rat-race now that our fabulous week is behind us.
Congratulations on your son’s graduation! That’s so fantastic. Looks like you all had a great few days there.

We had a fabulous time in Chicago! I’m so sad that our vacation is over…
Isn’t the Chicago lakefront beautiful? I just love the peace & calm of the lake on one side, and the urban architecture on the other side. Congrats to your son…you must be so proud 😉 ….Did you have two guys walking around with big snakes wrapped around their necks when you were on the lakefront? WE passed them when we were running…and I couldn’t figure out what it was on their necks until we were passing them…UGH. Almost face-planted…

Fortunately, we didn’t see any snake-wearing guys on the Lakefront Trail, but my next door neighbor texted me a picture of one that slithered onto their driveway while we were away. 🙁
Congrats to your son! Glad you had a great visit in a fantastic city!

Thank you; it was a fabulous week!
My SIL used to live in Chicago, but I wasn’t a runner then — I bet running by the lake is super cool! I’ve never even been to the bean!
Congrats to your son!

Thanks, Judy! Doesn’t running really change our perspective on how we view a city?
I definitely like to find the local disc golf course while I travel. With soccer matches and hungry kids, it isn’t always possible, but I will give it a shot! My oldest wants to start running, and I’m suggesting the park with a figure 8 track where I used to run when I was young. er.
You know that running would be a great compliment to soccer. Your daughter would outlast everyone on the field.
Looks like you guys had a fun and memorable trip to Chicago and congratulations again on your sons graduation! What an incredible accomplishment …I know you guys are so proud!
I loved all the pics you posted on IG and will be anxious to see more. Now I’m going straight to read your previous post on maintaining a positive mindset while aging …I really need this!

Congratulations on your son’s graduation! You have a lovely family!
I use the stairs as much as possible when I’m on vacation. Honestly I tend to schedule more of sightseeing and shopping when I’m in a new place.. 🙁
Thank you, Erica!
Congratulation to your son! And, you have a beautiful family. What a great vacation in the city. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Yes, it was pretty hot, but the humidity was really low so it wasn’t too uncomfortable.
