I ran yesterday. I ran, but I waited until the mercury climbed from two degrees to a balmy fifteen. During my run I actually daydreamed about the beach… I never do that. You see, I’m happy in the moment. I like that we have four distinct seasons in Virginia, and I embrace them all. Come March I will start grumbling about the boring brown grass and bare tree branches, but right now, I like them because at any moment they could become snow covered.
In additional to loving all four seasons, I’m also intrigued by the weather they bring. Yes, I just admitted that I’m a weather nerd. The first thing I do every morning is check my WeatherBug app on my phone so I know how to dress for my run. I hang on every word of the news reporter standing by the seawall in a hurricane telling us that it’s windy and raining sideways. I watch with glee as the overly excited reporter sticks a yard stick in the snow to show us how much snow they have outside the newsroom. And I even laugh when they drop an egg on the asphalt in the city on the hottest day in ten years.
To celebrate today’s extreme cold weather and my brief thoughts of being somewhere warmer, I made a few fitness posters using this past summer’s photos. Enjoy!
- Questions:
- Do you enjoy the different seasons, or would you prefer just one?
- Do you check the weather forecast before heading out?
- What’s the coldest temperature you’ve run, walked, or skied in?
I love weather, too. And four seasons. And I miss the beach I just saw 🙁 But I have the mountains! Who can complain?
You do have beautiful mountains!
Beautiful photos; now I’m daydreaming of the beach, too! That one of you running beside the horses is fantastic!
Once Kelly and I ran in -47C/-52F! We were the coldest place in the world that day, so we gave it a shot and ran five miles.
You. Are. A. Beast!!! I would like to think that Bill and I would have done the same thing and gone for a run! Where were you?
I love the seasons – hence why I’ll probably never leave New England. I may grumble when it’s extreme (like this ridiculous cold snap!) but you can’t beat a New England fall.
I always check the weather the day before and even right before I head out so I know how to dress, for sure!
One fall we vacationed in the Berkshires at the Inn at Stockbridge. The leaves were gorgeous!
Well, I like the four seasons. And we kind of get them all, with the exception of autumn (because palm trees don’t really have leaves that change and fall), and our summers last indefinitely. It’s just hard when we go from 70F to 25F in two days, without the benefit of snow or public places turning on the heat. That being said, I think I prefer the warmer weather – I’m just better prepared for it. The freezing temps hit and we’re just not equipped with the proper gear, and it’s a mad scramble to make sure everyone is warm and comfortable.
The coldest temperature I’ve run in was in the upper 30s in Virginia, when I was visiting. I did not love it.
Hope it’s warmed up down there!
I definitely check the weather before I head out! I probably spend way too much time stressing about clothing choices when running! I love all seasons as long as it’s a “mild” winter 🙂
It can be pretty miserable being too cold for an entire run. I start out wearing a very thin jacket over my long sleeved shirt that I can take off once I warm up. It’s all about layering to stay the right temperature for our Virginia winters!
I love four seasons, though here in Sweden we normally get two: winter and summer, with maybe a week in between. I love being outdoors in all weather, and today rode my bike to work in a ski suit – it worked pretty well, though I’m considering adding goggles (and peddling too fast to see the weird looks) for tomorrow.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’ll pop over and check yours out, too. Peddle fast!
I am so excited that the mercury is rising today! Going to go for an invigorating trail run on my lunch break. Woo hoo!! I need it after two days stuck inside with the crazy kiddos because daycare was closed. I love the seasons too, but I’m ready for the polar vortex to loosen its icy grip!!
Hope your run was invigorating!
Wow – it was 6 degrees here yesterday with a wind chill of -15. I worked out indoors, but I’m not a runner, so weather doesn’t usually impact my workout. I know my daughter can’t wait until warmer weather so she can start running outside again. I usually love the four different seasons, but yesterday made me longing for San Diego weather for a little while.
Thanks, Dana, for stopping by my blog! I enjoyed your guest post yesterday on Nicole’s blog. Hope it’s warming where you live.
Seasons are fascinating to a Florida girl. I spend some time in Oregon in the spring and fall and surprised myself by LOVING the beauty of the seasons. I am pretty content with our 4 Florida seasons, hot, hotter, hottest and not quite so hot because I don’t like to be cold.
HaHa! We lived in northern Utah the first two years we were married and we had two seasons… winter and July! 🙂
We all have our own preference. And I prefer four seasons! 🙂
Indeed!
I like having all four seasons, too, but I often catch myself complaining a bit about the weather we are having at some point during each season. Oops. I’m OCD about the weather forecast when it comes to a race, but on a daily basis I usually just go with whatever I overhear on the news and call it good. I do get surprised sometimes because of that 🙂
Great job getting out there in that bitter cold on Tuesday! I was outside for work, but I ran inside next to the woodstove.
You answered to the sweet warm call of Sven!
I would have to list my love of the seasons in this order: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer. Though Summer isn’t my favorite I wouldn’t want to get rid of it. I love all seasons, too!
Your posters are fantastic (I’m still loving the picture of you running with the horse!).
I’m a big fan of summer except when it gets really hot and humid; oh wait, isn’t that every day in July and August where I live? 😉
I do love four seasons, but now that I live in a one-season place (OK, we have ‘monsoon’ season and ‘just plain rain’ season), I realize that I’m perfectly OK with two weeks back in the northeast over Thanksgiving, then returning to my warm happy place.
Of course, the hot weather has its own challenges, but I never need a WeatherBug to tell me what the weather will be! Hot & humid, all the time. One kind of clothing, all the time. Short spandex, linen, and any kind of tech material? YES. =)
I must say that I’m thankful that we don’t have monsoon season in Virginia!
…but this year you have the Polar Vortex! 🙂

I’m kind of loving the extra cold this year because we are actually getting snow and not a winter mix, and that makes me very happy!
