On Monday while riding down the interstate, I caught up on some of my favorite running blogs, and decided to document the event with a my first ever selfie! After about the ten tries and getting pictures of everything, but me, I went with this one. I was using my camera and not my phone so I couldn’t see what was in the frame. Don’t worry, my hand and camera were in front of Bill’s face so he couldn’t see where he was driving either, so we were both clueless! Just kidding!
As soon as we got unpacked, we took a walk on the beach to visit with our neighbors that we hadn’t seen since last summer, because they weren’t at their houses yet when we came down in June. I had the pleasure of meeting Buster for the first time!
And I think he likes me!
The next day was rainy and cold and we tried to go out for a run between raindrops. The wind was whipping the water onto the shore even though it was just after low tide, and the running was difficult. You can see that I’m standing in pretty deep loose sand. It was like running in cake batter! After trying to run about a mile we decided to drive down into town to run on the trails, and it was a really good call!
I turned my RunKeeper on and we just started running and exploring! We ran on this boardwalk that goes out to Currituck Sound. It was a lovely 1+ mile run out-and-back. My legs would love for me to run on a boardwalk forever!
And so Bill doesn’t feel left out, here’s a picture of him!
Since the wild horses can also get to the marshy area we had just run through (these are the same wild horse that roam freely around our house), this sign is up to remind people to keep the horses in the area so they don’t get out into the roads.
After our run to the sound and back, we ran along community roads and sidewalks. We ran past this little guy and a biker behind us moved him to the side of the road for safety! He jumped back into his shell when he heard my camera snap! The turtle, not the biker!
Next we ran up one of the sandy side streets to the ocean front. You can see the Currituck Light House behind Bill…
We wrapped up our run by running on a trail that runs along the main road. I decided that since I probably wouldn’t be doing a tempo run this week, to kick it up a notch on our final 1.5 miles back to where we had parked. We ran strong and it felt great! To cool down, we walked around the grounds of the lighthouse before we headed back to our house.
- Questions:
- When you run, do you like to go on an adventure or run a predetermined route?
- When was the last time you ran on a non-asphalt or gravel trail?
- Ladies, do you run in shorts or skirts? Do you call them skirts or skorts?
How’d you like the skirt? I just ran for the first time in one Saturday too. You look SUPER speedy on your boardwalk run and you look SUPER pretty in your first selfie! You need to teach me the tricks of the trade!
I’ve been wearing running shirts for years for working. I love them because I can train my clients, leave the gym and go run errands, and not worry about changing clothes. I just didn’t think I would like running in them, but I really liked it!
It’s funny that I look speedy in that picture, because as I came around that corner all I was thinking of was to slow down so I didn’t end up in the marshy water below! 🙂
I refuse to wear a running skirt out of principle. I’m not sure why I’m so opposed to them, but I am.
ANYWAYS. Running in soft sand is SO HARD! It’s a killer workout! I also agree that you looked super speedy in that boardwalk photo =).
I switch it up each time I run…sometimes I run my same old regular routes, but I also just take off on random trails that seem exciting. It keeps it interesting.
Agree with Emma. You’re flying on that boardwalk! You go girl! I ran in a RunningSkirts maternity skirt when I was pregnant with Monkey, and I loved it. But I haven’t bought a new skirt post-baby. I do like that you can go from gym to grocery store in them. The one I have is also not stinky. My running shorts are pretty awful after a hard run!
I’ve been doing a lot of road/asphalt/track running now that I’m into my marathon plan, and I miss the trails! I might skip my tempo next week and trade it out for some single track!
Looks like such a pretty run. I’d love to check out that route next time in NC.
You’d love it! I’m going to do a post on Sunday or Monday with my RunKeeper routes from the Outer Banks.
Great photos Debbie!! It looks awesome down there. Guess who I saw this morning on my run? I ran close to home on the W&OD as I got a little later start. Who do I see near Crestveiw but…..Squeaky! I have not seen him in a few years…reminded me of our starts at Crestview several years back when we always saw him. Good to know he is still out there, and still wearing the white non-running shoes. 🙂
Did you get a picture? The last time I saw him was at Partlow’s, and he was in his white shorts with no shirt and it was cold!
When I’m at home I have a set route, but when I’m out of town we just like to explore the new area! On Sunday, my long runs, I run on a gravel trail. The trail is suppose to be for horses, but I never see any. It is easier on my knees then the bike path!
I’m exactly the same way about exploring more when I’m out of town. I have my favorite places to run when I’m home and tend to stick to them. I need to get better about exploring around my home town. 🙂
I think growing for a run is the best way to explore! And I love running skirts, especially for long runs/races just so long as they are made with inner shorts that don’t creep up. more comfort, less chafing.
Exactly, you see so much more on foot that you miss in a car!
Great job on your selfie! Buster looks like a fun dog. Maybe he will run with you. Your beach running looks like fun. I would totally manage to slip on that wet boardwalk. I am a creature of habit so I mostly do predetermined runs which may include a small piece of exploring.
I am a shorts runner all the way. Running skirts just patent my style. But you look really cute in yours! Did you like it?
I didn’t even notice that I was running in a skirt instead of shorts, and that made me very happy!
I only like an adventure when I’ve properly prepared (mentally and physically) for it – otherwise the necessary invention and detours annoy me. In London, we explored 2 or 3 times, and the rest of the time, I re-ran those routes. I also think it’s hard to do a faster/more challenging/pace dictated workout when you’re also trying to remember directions, not get lost, and read the now-smudgy map you’re holding in sweaty hands!
I do wear skorts sometimes, just for fun. I call them skorts….obviously 🙂
Believe me, this run wasn’t fast or pace dictated. It was just about Bill and me getting out and enjoying a run and each others company, so it was the perfect time to explore! Full disclosure though… We’ve had the beach house in our family for 25 years so we know the general area pretty well. We had never gone on the board walk out to the sound and thought that would be a great time to go out there, and run on some of the side roads to the ocean.
