Let me tell you the story of Rally Pigeon… but first I’ll start my story earlier in the day when we visited The Bullpen, because most good stories start with a margarita!
Our good friends Beth and Tom invited us to join them for a Nationals game where the Nats were taking on the Giants in the third game of their series.
We arrived under absolutely perfect weather conditions (mid-70’s, low humidity) plenty early to have time to visit The Bullpen, grab a few drinks, and play some cornhole.
And grab a bite to eat… Don’t judge me; I will always eat a hotdog when I’m at a ballpark!
We caught the national anthem, but not from our seats…
Beth and I made it over to our seats (we had seats separate from Bill and Tom), and I got to see Natties shortstop, and my secret crush, Ian Desmond hit a home run (not at this at bat, but later in the game)…
A couple sitting next to Bill and Tom offered to trade seats with Beth and me so we could all sit together, so at the end of the fourth inning we were reunited. We moved to our new seats in plenty of time to catch the presidents race.
Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt were neck-and-neck until TJ edged Teddy out at the finish line despite Teddy’s best efforts. Teddy: Call me! I can make you a faster runner!
Sometime during the sixth inning, and with the Nats down 6-2, a pigeon landed on the field just behind second base. We soon learned that it wasn’t just any pigeon, it was Rally Pigeon!
And a close up…
Rally Pigeon even got a mention by Jayson Werth after the game!
Before we left the ballpark, Rally Pigeon joined us for a post-game group picture!

I like to think Rally Pigeon is like Santa Claus; you have to believe…
- Questions:
- Are you a baseball fan? ~ If the Nats are playing, our TV is on and we are watching!
- MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, or NCAA?
- What did you do for fun this past weekend?
I love how cornhole is popular at baseball games now! There is a spot at Coors Field where you can play. I love cornhole so much and baseball games are fun. Sadly, the Pirates never seem to do well enough to justify me spending a lot of time getting invested in them. I did go to two Rockies games this year (one vs. the Pirates!) and that is about normal for me. Bring on the football!

Bill and our son built a cornhole set last summer, and I painted our son’s university’s logo on them. They turned out great!
We can’t wait for football either! This weekend is our first Hokie game, and I’m hoping to tailgate with Meagan!
So fun that y’all went to the game and all the pre-game stuff. Love “rally pigeon.”
BTW – Blake Trienen (one of the new pitchers this year) is from Kansas. His dad and Chris are in the guard together and we have known them for years!!! So we are all cheering for the Nationals these days!!

Very cool about you guys knowing Blake and his family!
I’m not a baseball fan, but I’ve been to one Oriole game this year, and we are going on Monday. I don’t mind going once in awhile, but I prefer football. We saw Billy Joel at Nationals Park – what a nice stadium!

We used to be big Orioles fans back in the Cal Ripken, Jr. days and until the Nats came into town. Bill was a Senators fan when he was little, so we were thrilled to get a team back in DC.
Camden Yards is a very nice stadium, too! We used to love that the Baltimore Marathon ran through Camden Yards and past the Babe Ruth statue.
I’m a huge baseball fan. My team is the Boston Red Sox, but we root for the Nats since we started living here. It’s ok since they are in different divisions! I really need to get to a Nats game!

You should go since you live so close! Your sons would have so much fun, too! 🙂
Debbie – great post! We had such a great time with you guys — and loved the little rally pigeon! Go Nats!
Thanks, Beth! And thanks for inviting Bill and me to be your guests. We had so much fun!
I do believe in the Rally Pigeon and Rally Monkeys and simply turning your cap inside out. Anything to start a rally. Especially against the giants. I especially hate the giants. Maybe more so than the dodgers.
I’d have to say NFL. I love my Rockies, but the Broncos …. my heart rises and falls on Gameday with my Broncos. It was like this for my dad and my grandpa, too.
This past weekend – we played soccer on a hot, humid day. A nearly all-white team playing in the Latin league. Fans look at me funny because I side with the one white team in the circuit. When their team employed a few questionable tactics, I voiced my displeasure – in Spanish of course.

I’m not a baseball fan, but that’s a funny story about the rally pigeon! Glad the Nats were able to pull off a win. My dad goes to the games, occasionally. Although I think he goes for the beer and peanuts, not the baseball.

Let’s hope we don’t have to call in Rally Pigeon for our Hokies, but if we do, I hope he works the same kind of magic! 🙂
