My husband Bill started running my longer training runs with me to keep me company and before he knew it, he was up to 16 miles. One day I saw a new marathon in our area and decided to sign up for it. He was at work when I called to see if he wanted me to sign him up. He answered his phone, said something like, “Sure that sounds good,” and hung up. When he got home that evening he asked exactly what he’d committed himself to! Four months later, we ran Marathon in the Parks together and he was hooked! Today he’s got about 20 marathons, 10 half marathons, and lots of shorter races under his belt.
Both of our sons ran high school cross country, and now that they are out of college they run for fitness, and sign up for the occasional race.
During the summer of 2013, our oldest son Joseph decided he wanted to run an ultramarathon, but didn’t want to wait until the fall. So I did what any good mom would do, and created the Cruisers’ 45-Mile Ultramarathon just for him! My husband, several friends, and I split up the distance so he had a running buddy with him every mile. It was a wonderful day!
Our youngest son Daniel is better known for his Thanksgiving Day 5K antics when he dresses as a pilgrim and chases his sister-in-law Julie (dressed as the turkey) in our local turkey trot.
Julie joined our team in 2014 when she married Joseph. Julie ran cross country in high school, and has since continued to race including running several half marathons. She’s the perfect fit for our family!
The family that runs together. . . . . has a lifetime of fun together.
- Questions:
- Do you have running buddies in your family?
- What other activies/hobbies do you share with your family members?
- Are you racing this weekend?

I love that y’all are a family of runners!!!
Chris (husband) doesn’t run much anymore because of his knee – he does enough to run his yearly 1.5 miles for his PT!!
Both of my boys run now though and I love it!!! My oldest is in high school and did CC in middle school but now just prefers to run for fun. My youngest is an 8th grader and did CC in middle school and plans to run in high school, too. He did a half marathon last June (13 miles because he is 13!!!).

I remember when your younger son ran the half with you last summer. You were on cloud nine! 🙂
My oldest son runs. We do a couple of half marathons each year. My younger sons have not caught the bug (yet). They would consider it punishment at this point (teens!). My husband ran as a young man, but finds it difficult now on his knees. You are lucky to have the whole family involved. I hope you are feeling better!

Thanks, and yes I’m feeling much better now that I’m able to get out and run!
Super sweet! Iove that your hubby runs with you and does races with you. There is still some hope that mine might come around right?

Absolutely!
Barry and I both run (he ran XC in high school, and then got back into running when we started dating), but no one else in either of our families runs. My dad is very much like a running buddy, though. When I’m home and I go out for a run, he’s usually out on the trail walking or biking. He also comes to a lot of my races.

Not only is your dad your running buddy, but he’s now the Cruisers’ running buddy, too! 🙂
Love this! I wish I had running buddies in my family. My hubby runs, but casually and I can’t keep up with him anyway. My sister runs but she lives in NH so we very rarely get to run together unfortunately!

Thanks! It’s so fun having them there to run with me!
I LOVE that your entire family runs!! It’s definitely my dream for our kid(s) to enjoy running, too!
My hubby is definitely my favourite, well only, running partner. I feel so lucky that we can do it together!

Our sons have started stopping by to workout twice a week in our home gym. It makes us so happy that our fitness examples over the years had a positive impact! 🙂
