Yesterday morning I looked out our kitchen window and saw Pegasus, the winged divine stallion….. He wasn’t white like the mythical creature, but his wings were.
I called for Bill to grab his camera and a long lens and come quickly! One of the wild horses was munching away on sea oats in our neighbors’ yard; and on it’s back was an egret.
When the horse started running, the egret flapped its wings to maintain its balance. It was quite a funny sight!
Once the horse stopped to eat again, the egret settled back into it’s comfortable seat and enjoyed the view from its perch.
Five horses were roaming around our house for the rest of the day, but we didn’t see anymore free-loading egrets!
- Questions:
- How’s your balance – good enough to avoid falling off a horse while riding bareback?
- Have you ever ridden a horse?
- Did you race this weekend?
oh wow gorgeous pics! I am at Bethany now and all I see are crazy kids running around!

HaHa, that’s quite a contrast to what we’re seeing!
I would love to see horses out my window (with or without the birds..lol).
It is pretty awesome. We woke up to about six horses under our house one year.
This is so exciting! We can’t wait to try to see the wild horses when we head to the OBX on Saturday. This is a tad ironic since we have two tame ponies in our barn 😉
I didn’t race this weekend but we volunteered at the awesome Beach to Beacon 10K here in Maine. We saw elite runners just feet from us and I shook hands with Joan Benoit Samelson! Such a great time!

Since you mentioned earlier that you’re running in the Nags Head 5K, I assume you’re staying south of here. I’m not familiar with anything south of Kitty Hawk, so I don’t know if you’ll have to drive north to see the wild horses or it there are some down that way as well. Hope you get to see some!
How terrific that you volunteered at the Beach to Beacon 10K and saw so many elite runners. I watched Joan Benoit Samelson in a race once, but have never had the opportunity to meet her.
Beautiful!

Thanks! Bill has taken some great photos while down here.
Despite being able to ride a unicycle, I don’t think my balance is good enough to stay on the back of a horse bareback while it runs. But then again, I don’t have wings! *insert Red Bull pun here*
My cousins had a horse aptly named “Tossey” that we used to ride when I was a kid. She is the main reason I don’t do any horse riding anymore!

My uncle had a huge white horse named Prince, and he’s the reason I choose not to ride horses anymore. He should have been named Bucky! 😀
this is amazing! i just love the wild horses.

I’m glad you liked it! It just struck me as really funny how that egret was maintaining his balance by flapping his wings rather than digging his talons into the horse’s back.
I love pics/stories of animals together in unexpected ways or developing unexpected friendships. 🙂

Me, too! I’m not positive that the horse was thrilled with his rider, but he seemed to tolerate it pretty well. 🙂
