It’s time for Friday Five linkup with DC area bloggers Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! Be sure to stop by their blogs and say hello! While you’re there, be sure to check out other bloggers who are participating in the linkup, too. This week the DC Trifecta chose Five Running Tips as the theme…..
“We are all created with equal amounts of awesome.
It’s up to you to determine how much of it the world gets to see.”

Over the past two and a half years of blogging, I’ve spent hours writing posts about all things running. You can find articles on how to start running, how to avoid injuries, types of training runs, race preparation, and much, much more on my Coaching Tab. For today’s post, though, I’m going to keep it simple, and talk about things that might easily be overlooked when thinking about running tips…
1. Have Fun – Running is our sport, let’s not make it our chore. If you love racing, race. If you don’t, don’t. Run with friends, run alone – do whatever makes you happy. Whatever you do, don’t take your running so seriously that you let it get you down if you have an off day or week.
2. Listen To Your Body – If something starts hurting, slow down, cross train, stop running, see a doctor, whatever it takes to make that body part stop hurting.
3. Set Realistic Goals – If you have just started running for the first time since you were six years old, don’t set a goal of running a marathon next month. Build a three month base, see how you feel, and if you want to run longer distances find a plan that will get you there in four or five months.
4. Mix It Up – Run a variety of routes, try out different surfaces, and run different paces instead of heading out your door for the exact same run every day. Try running at different times of the day and see when you enjoy it most.
5. Get Fitted In Proper Shoes – If you’ve never been fitted for running shoes, do it, and preferably at a specialty running store. Knee, hip, or ankle pain when running can often be prevented by wearing the proper running shoe for your type of foot. Keep in mind that feet and shoes change, and the perfect shoe for you today, might not be your best choice in three years.
Bonus: Find A Running Friend Or Group To Train With – Let’s face it, friends are the best! Even if you prefer to run alone, it’s great to have friends with a common interest. Running friends are great for bouncing training ideas off of, they understand injury frustrations, and they give us an outlet for talking running so we don’t bore our other friends to death!
Don’t forget to stop by the other participating bloggers’ little corners of the internet to find more running tips!
- Questions:
- What is your most basic running tip?
- What running tip have you received that you found to be the most helpful?
- Are you racing this weekend? ~ I am on Sunday! I’ll be running in the Leesburg 20K.
Have a wonderful race Sunday!! I race next Sunday The Santa Rosa Half Marathon so while you’re racing, I’ll be on a training run. I totally agree with “mixing it up”! My husband knows how to read me and knows when I am pooping out so he’ll just change the route we are taking and makes it way more fun and seems to give me more energy.

Thank you, and good luck on the Santa Rosa Half next Sunday! Good for your husband for making sure it’s fun for you. My husband and I have so much fun running together (especially trail running), but he’s recovering from knee surgery so I’ve temporarily lost my running buddy.
I wish someone would’ve told me sooner to get fitted for the right shoes. I lost so many toenails in the beginning because I was running in a whole size too small. WE live and learn.

I was lucky and someone told me pretty early on about going up a full size in running shoes, but there are plenty of other things that I’ve learned the hard way!
Have fun is a great one! We have to remember why we do it sometimes. We do it bc we love it. So when it stops becoming something that we love and a chore you know you have to reevaluate it. Like you said, Joining a running group is always great and keeps you motivated.

I chuckled when I saw a runner coming toward me wearing a shirt that say, “I hate running,” and then I wondered if they really hate running or if they’re just trying to be funny. I hope it’s the latter, because otherwise, why run?
Great tips and I especially agree with mixing it up. I find variety keeps me motivated. The same route at the same pace gets boring really fast and doesn’t help if we want to improve….

Back before mobile phones, I ran the same route when I ran early in the morning so if anything happened to me and I didn’t make it home when expected, my husband would know where to go look. I love that I can now just go out and explore new routes. It’s so much more interesting!
Have a great weekend!
The right shoes are so important yes! Of course I am for running with a group. Have a great race this weekend

My biggest advice to runners is #1. Have fun. If it isn’t fun, why do it?

Thanks, Amy! Have a great weekend!
Great tips! The best tip I’ve ever read was, “shut your brain off and run like an animal.” I believe we over think running much of the time so this phrase has helped me remember to enjoy the run and just let go. Let go of stress, worry, fear, and insecurity. Have a great weekend!!!

Thanks, you have a great weekend, too!
Great tips Deb! I love the realistic goals one. I have to remind myself that one regularly. Most basic tip: Have fun! If you take up running as a hobby it shouldn’t feel like a chore! Good luck on your race!!
Thank you!

Just have fun! If you don’t, then what’s the point? I would also add run slowly at first as you build up. You can always work on speed later when you’ve got the endurance. Good luck Sunday!
