~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…

I runfess:  Every year I plan to go to DC for a run around the Tidal Basin during peak bloom of the cherry blossoms. Once again, I’ve let the peak blooms come and go while I’ve stayed in the suburbs. At least we have plenty of cherry blossoms to enjoy here in the hood, even if they’re a different variety than the popular Yoshino in DC.

I runfess:  I’ve wanted to run the Across The Bay 10K for several years. This year the race is on November 5th and my calendar is wide open that weekend. Registration is open, yet I can’t pull the trigger on signing up. The weather has been gorgeous on race day the last couple of years which has me convinced that if I run it, we’ll have high winds and horizontal rain as I am suspended 186 feet over the Chesapeake Bay.

I runfess:  I thought I was the only runner with such frequent potty problems, but based on her runfessions, Wendy continues to challenge me for the top place on the throne (see what I did there?). I’m going to go waaaaay back to the early 2000’s to one of the Cherry Blossom 10-Milers for this story. Stay with me…

My friend Miles and I were running together and at some point before heading up Rock Creek Park, I had to stop and pee. Since I really, really, really had to go and couldn’t find a porta potty, I stopped behind some bushes. As Miles and I continued to run, I became convinced that I was getting a urinary tract infection. It certainly made sense since I’d just had to go so badly and already had the urge to go again. I was also starting to get a lot of discomfort that felt exactly like the pain I’d experienced once before when I’d had a UTI.

I ran on at a steady pace, wanting nothing more than to finish the race, get home, and go to an urgent care center. Once across the finish line, I raced to a porta potty. Low and behold I found a huge blade of grass stuck in the lining of my running shorts. It had been hitchhiking there, irritating me since that potty stop behind the bushes. The second I freed that blade of grass, all of my pain was gone!

I runfess:  I’m enjoying riding my bike a lot more than I thought I would. As a runner who’s gotten cut off and yelled at by bikers many times on the W&OD Trail, I swore that I’d never go to the dark side, yet here I am…

I runfess:  I just ordered some incredibly cool capris from Amazon even though it’s almost too hot for me to wear them (I usually wear shorts if it’s over 45°). I just got a notification that they have shipped and should arrive between April 14th and May 5th; and yes, we have Amazon Prime. What the heck?

Ahhh yes, it feels good to get another set of runfessions off of my chest. See you next month in the runfessional.
