Mother’s Day Lessons
Mother’s Day has me reminiscing about my childhood and the excitement my brother and I would have as we presented our mom with our little homemade gifts. One year, though, Dad suggested we wash the breakfast and supper dishes for Mom on Mother’s Day. He thought it was such a great idea that every Sunday thereafter Mom got the day off from washing dishes. As a kid, and then a teenager, I’m sure I grumbled a lot and resented having this added to my weekly chores, but in the long run it was another one of the wonderful lessons that my parents taught me about hard work and helping others.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
With a workshop scheduled at Board & Brush to make a custom wood sign for our basement wall collage, I skipped a ride with Bill and our friends, and instead put my creative juices to work. Later in the afternoon I hopped on the treadmill (affiliate link) for a quick 1-mile walk (17:40 pace).
Monday
It was raining when I woke up so I skipped running; however, I lifted weights for an hour during a nice little hole in my morning schedule. After seeing my last client I hit up my regular grocery store and Trader Joe’s for a much-needed grocery restock.
While driving home from Trader Joe’s at around 4 PM, I saw one of my MRTT friends out running. I really don’t like afternoon runs so I hadn’t planned to make up my earlier rained-out run, but Jackie inspired me to go for a run. It was 73°, humid, and threatening to storm at 4:30 as I headed out, but I got it done and finished my 5K with a 9:34 average pace.
Once back inside, I stretched and foam rolled for a total of 20 minutes.
Tuesday
After waking up to rain at 6 AM, Bill and I headed out for a ride at 8:45. At 73°, it was a beautiful morning (it always feels cooler on a bike) and I was surprised at how few people were on the W&OD Trail. Bill had to head in earlier than me, so I rode a little farther and finished my 30-miler at an average speed of 14.4 MPH.
Wednesday
With a forecast of rain and storms starting at 7 AM, I headed out for my run at 5:45 AM before seeing my first client. I finished my 5K in the humid 64° at a 9:24 average pace. Right as forecast, I noticed it raining just before 7 AM. I squeezed in an hour of strength training between my first two clients and then stretched and foam rolled once I’d logged off with my last client.
Thursday
My friend Mary drove to our house to join me for a 7:30 AM ride. With a slight breeze at 50° we felt quite chilly at the start, but warmed up nicely. We had to cut our ride short at 20 miles (14.3 MPH average speed) so I could get home in time to log on with a client.
Friday
I lifted for an hour after seeing my morning clients and before teaching my balance and stretching class. And as with most Fridays, I got in 15 minutes of stretching at the end of the class.
Saturday
It was cold and rainy so my friend Betsy and I canceled our planned ride, and instead, I got in a quick 12 miles (16.6 MPH average speed) on my spin bike (affiliate link).
Here’s What You Might Have Missed
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: April 25 – May 1 / 5K is the New 5-Miler
- • Tuesday – 41-Mile Gravel Grinder Practice Ride
- • Friday – Catching Up Over Coffee: Peonies, Cicadas, and Amorous Toads
Questions:
- • How often do you shop for groceries, do you have a weekly schedule or do you stop in as you need items?
- • If you’re a mom, what are your Mother’s Day plans?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Great job getting in all those workouts around the crazy weather we had this week! We usually do one big grocery order on Amazon fresh each weekend, and one trip to the store for a few other things that we weren’t able to get online. Happy Mother’s Day!
Thanks, Lisa! I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day, too!
Thanks, Lisa! I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day as well!
I’m not much of an afternoon/after-work runner either, but sometimes it actually is a nice change. You are so consistent with your 5k’s!
No races for me this weekend, but it does seems like there are more and more happening! Nice to see.
Yes, it’s super exciting that more and more races are happening again!
As a mom, I can attest that having the dishes washed on Mother’s Day is one of the best gifts you can get!
All your amazing pictures of bike rides are inspiring me. i haven’t been on my bike in a long time, but I’m thinking of dusting it off and getting out there again.
For grocery shopping, I do a big shop on Sundays and then a few little ones during the week. There was a time when I shopped once a week, but I can’t even imagine being that organized now!

I bet you’ll be happy after you get back on your bike! It’s such great cross training, but without the pounding on your joints (and foot).
I do the same with running. I don’t run in the rain but if it stops I feel like I should do it.
I usually shop on Saturday after my long run.
Yup, an impromptu race – up a mountain. It was hard but fun.
A race up a mountain? Go Darlene!
Pre-covid I was at the Grocery store a few times a week. I have scaled down to once a week for a big shop and then order delivery if I need something else mid week. I kind of miss just roaming around whole foods or Wegmans but I think I will again soon. Hope you had a great mother’s day
Same here, I used to love stopping in often to pick up items nice and fresh.
I usually shop for groceries once a week on Sunday morning. I go through the circulars and get sale items and then look in my refrigerator and pantry to see what other items I need to pick up. I used to love grocery shopping but have really limited my time in there since the pandemic.
I hope that you had a great Mother’s Day!
Thanks, Kim, I did!
Wow, you sound really organized with your shopping routine! Impressive!
I’m jealous of all your outdoor biking! It’s been so cold (and horribly windy) here lately to saddle up Gustavas for any riding. Groceries…UGH. We’ve never indulged in any delivery service (not sure it even happens in our little college town). I usually go once a week to get the main stuff, then stop-in as needed for misc items that were forgotten or needed. The hubby got in the routine of doing a lot of the grocery shopping this past year…and I’m alright with that LOL I hope you had a great Mother’s Day!

Thanks, Kim, I hope your Mother’s Day was wonderful, too! And yes, I’m all about the hubby doing as much grocery shopping as he’s willing to do.
I used to go as needed . . . I seem to put it off more these days, until I have to restock & we still get delivery from some stores.
Your dad was a wise man.
I’m afraid we were not trained quite so well!

I’ve yet to try any of the grocery delivery service, but we used curbside pickup early on in the pandemic.
The whole grocery shopping thing came to a head this week-I’m usually a meal planner, but the last couple of weeks have let it go. OMG, my hubs had me going to the store multiple times and he ordered a cart as well.. we are back to planning. I can’t live my life around shopping!
No plans today but my hubs made me breakfast and he did all the cooking and clean up for dinner. Really, it’s all I need.
Agreed! The kids did the cooking and cleanup for me as well and that was perfect!
your weather sounds a bit like ours though all my morning walks had to be pushed out to afternoon walks last week as it was just too much rain/ cold. Hey we do what we can, right? How funny you saw an MRTT friend running and was inspired to run in the afternoon! I have that sometimes too! Though of course I rarely see anyone from my old club out running these days (I did see someone Thursday but I didn’t recognize her – just that she was wearing a shirt with the logo of my old club).
Grocery shopping… to be honest if I do the shopping it’s for a few items that we need for dinner, for example. We never do a big shop because we try not to take the car. So you never really want to have too many groceries that you have to schlep home. I do think it’s slightly different here though. You need to buy things fresh and use them right away. We are not allowed to use certain things on fruit and veg for example so they don’t “stay” for very long. And we go to separate shops at times – the butcher or the baker. Ron actually does the daily shopping for the most part and that was a decision we made at the beginning of the pandemic – less exposure and, well, I hate shopping so … hahaha!
I got out on the bike last week too! I missed it! Hopefully more rides in my near future.
Hopefully, you’ll be able to get on your bike more as the weather improves.
Reading your question about grocery shopping just reminded me that I have no meal plan this week! I used to be so good about scheduling meals and grocery shopping and now it’s just a rush to get something made. ugh. I have hopes that will get more organized one of these days again!

I admire people who are good at meal planning. It’s never been one of my strong suits.
I have a love/hate relationship with running in the rain. I love it when it is warm/humid but hate it when it is cold and windy. It is interesting how many things we did not like to do as kids/teenagers, we now don’t mine or or simply see things differently. I actually like washing dishes, but I know one day I would like a dishwasher. 🙂

Ditto on running in the rain at different temperatures…
I hope you get that dishwasher soon!
