First “Official” Metric Century in the Books
I focused on making sure my workouts leading up to our Tour de Madison Metric Century were front ended on the week so I’d have a couple of days rest toward the end of the week. It was a great strategy and my legs felt rested for our hilly Saturday ride. I’m hoping to have a recap up later this week.
Blogging From My iPhone
Don’t try this a home! That’s right, I’m practically cross eyed after writing most of this blog post from my phone. On Monday afternoon Bill and I dropped our MacBooks off at our local Apple store hoping to get the batteries checked out and fixed while we waited, but because our MacBooks are four years old we were told they needed to be sent off for repair. I depend on my laptop for blogging, FaceTiming clients, etc. and have been lost without it. So if I usually read and comment on your blog, please forgive me for not tuning in last week – I just couldn’t handle spending more time working from my phone…
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
Mother’s Day had me chilling and lounging around on various sofas while enjoying the company of our sons, d-i-l, future d-i-l, and granddog.
Monday
With my 6:30 AM client on vacation, I slept in until 7 and lifted weights before seeing my other clients. Planning ahead so I could rest my legs on Thursday and Friday anticipating Saturday’s hilly metric century, I ran midday. It was a sunny 57° with a nice breeze and low humidity, and felt like a crisp fall day. I ran my usual 5K at a 9:22 average pace.
Tuesday
I took a rain check on a 5:30 AM run with two friends and instead slept in until 7 and ran solo just after 8 when the temps had risen to 59° – I’m loving running on these sunny days with cooler temps and very low humidity. If nothing else, I’m consistent and finished my 5K with an average pace of 9:22, exactly the same pace as my previous run.
Wednesday
With my 6:30 AM client still on vacation, I joined Bill and our Dawn Patrol friends for a beautiful early morning ride on a partially new-to-me route through the hills of Reston. It was 48° at 5:15 as we rolled out of our garage, but the temperature dropped to 42° and my fingers got so cold they went numb. My single layer mid-temp gloves weren’t enough and luckily, one of my friends had an extra pair of insulated gloves he let me borrow. By the time we rolled back into our garage, we’d covered 40 miles at a 13.9 MPH average speed.
After training my morning clients I spent an hour strength training. Later I took my car to get the oil changed and walked 1 mile home (16:16 average pace) and later walked back to pick it up just before the shop closed (14:41 average pace).
Thursday
I didn’t do any specific workouts, but I did spend 2 hours pulling out pachysandra that had grown in between our stone steps and transplanted it to another location.
Friday
I limited my strength training to upper body and core only to allow my legs to rest for my hilly Tour de Madison century ride scheduled for the next day. I did; however, do about 10 minutes of legs during the strengthening section of the balance and stretching class I teach (I had no choice). And of course, I got in 15 minutes of stretching at the end of the class.
Just before leaving for Madison County to spend the night before our ride, UPS delivered my MacBook so Saturday’s recap was written from the comfort of my MacBook. Yay!
Saturday
We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for the Tour de Madison Metric Century Ride. Seven of our Dawn Patrollers started the ride, but only four of us continued on for the metric century. The ride had several options – metric century (which was actually 66 miles), 56 miles, 42 miles, and 20 miles. Three of our friends had afternoon plans and had registered for the 42-miler.
For the most part the four of us stayed pretty close together, regrouping occasionally at intersections as necessary. We had beautiful scenery and rolling hills, and other than a cruel 2-mile climb at mile 62, it wasn’t that difficult of a ride. I finished with an average speed of 13.8 MPH, and noticed my slowest speed was 3.8 MPH on the final 17% grade on our last climb and my fastest speed was 36 MPH careening down the fun chicane-like turns on the 10% grade descent. More fun details to follow on my recap!
Here’s What You Might Have Missed
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Do you use your phone for tedious amounts of typing?
- • What was your favorite workout of the week? ~ Mine was definitely Saturday’s ride.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I loathe blogging on my phone. I can manage reading a few blogs, on occasion, but if I try to draft a post, the spacing is ALWAYS jacked by the time I check it on the computer for formatting. I have thought of getting a tablet as a back-up, which is just a step above the phone, but it would at least be easier to read and type ( I assume?). Great job on that l.o.n.g ride! We registered for a group ride on May 30th, so we’re ready to resume our group riding routine 😉
Thanks, Kim! It’s so exciting being able to register for events, isn’t it!
Congrats on your beautiful ride! It looks picture perfect.
Oh no on the Macbooks! I use my desktop for writing generally, and used my iPad for commenting while I was away — and that’s part of why it took me so long to comment on blogs (that & hours in the car!).
Oh, Judy, it is so gorgeous down there. It almost makes me want to move to central Virginia.
blogging from a phone is so hard and tedious! Congrats on your metric ride. Anything over 50miles is seriously tough. Looking forward to reading all about it
Thanks, Deborah!
Congrats on your ride! I bet it was a lot of fun.
I have never blogged from my phone. It’s hard enough commenting, much less posting, lol. I’m sure you’ll be glad to get your laptop back!
Thanks, Wendy! And yes, as I mentioned, I’m thrilled to have my MacBook back!
Congratulations on your metric century! I’ll be looking forward to the recap. Your photos are always beautiful.
I can’t do much typing on my phone. Even when I text, the typos are insane. Glad you got your MacBook back!

Thank you, Jenny!
I’m not good with doing anything blog related on my phone – I always have lots of typos!
Congrats on your century ride – that is so cool!
Thanks, Kim!
Congrats on your bike ride. What an achievement.
I rode 3 miles and was exhausted lol
I comment on blogs from my phone. I do sometimes write posts too. But I add and resize the photos on my computer.
No race this weekend but a 5k next and 10 miler the week after.
Thanks, Darlene!
I usually have problems logging in to comment from my phone so I didn’t even try last week. Well, that I just couldn’t stand looking at my phone anymore. LOL
I much prefer blogging on the laptop and am lost without my Macbook! Even when I would travel for work, I’d bring both laptops, my work one and my personal one, as it’s so much easier. Glad you got yours fixed!
Wow- you are a beast with the biking- so impressive!
I totally get it, and yes, I’m so happy to have mine back!
Thanks, this was such a fun ride!
I was so lost when my MacBook was in for repair! I have found that I can’t comment on a lot of blogs with my phone which is frustrating. Mostly because I find out after I typed in everything and then it doesn’t work 🙁 That early ride sounds chilly!! I need to go out for more rides but I’ve been too busy lately. Hopefully soon I’ll be joining the group rides again.

Yes, so frustrating!
The weather is certainly warming up significantly here. Hope you’re able to get out for group rides again soon!
Ugh! I hate when the computer has to be sent out. So stressful.
I laugh that you can sleep later to wait for the weather to warm up. Meanwhile, I’m getting up as early as possible before it gets hot.
We’ll be getting out earlier to beat the heat soon enough. It’s supposed to be in the mid-80’s low-90’s the rest of the week.
congrats on your ride!! it looks like it was really perfect conditions!
I used to blog from my phone lonnnnnnnnng ago; I also do not recommend it!
my favorite workout of last week was probably my ride with my husband, “only” 22KM but we went out to Meinerswijk and got up close and personal with the wild horses. And, bonus, it was sunny and not a drop of rain in sight. (unlike what is predicted this week).
Still no races over here…
It’s great that you’re starting to get back out on your bike. Hope the weather cooperates again soon!
Congrats on your ride! Love that you had great weather too. I don’t use my phone much for typing. I get frustrated trying to type with that small keyboard.
