Three Runs and Now Rest
It wasn’t planned, but I ended up running three times last week – a drop in the bucket compared to just a few years ago. Most importantly, everything felt great and I recovered easily and quickly after each run. I’ve got my second race of the year on Thursday so I’ll keep my workouts low key this coming week as I let my body rest in preparation for the turkey trot.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Rest day after Saturday’s 65-mile birthday bike ride.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Running: 6.5 Miles
• Average pace: 9:45
• Elevation gain: 214 feet
• Start time: 4:59 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 32° (feels like 27°)
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Mondays are my busiest work day so I was up at 3:57 (I woke up on my own before my 4 AM alarm sounded) to run 6.5 miles for my 65th birthday. It was a perfect start to my day!
Tuesday
Drive to the farm – almost 6 hours of driving on I-81 in the rain along with a million tractor trailers was loads of fun!
Wednesday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:42
• Elevation gain: 236 feet
• Start time: 8:01 AM
• Location: country roads near the farm
• Weather: 34° (feels like 26°) and cloudy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 16:29
• Elevation gain: 116 feet
• Start time: 8:45 AM
• Location: country roads near the farm
• Weather: 35° (feels like 28°) and cloudy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
Strength training: 15 minutes of core
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I’m always super busy with projects when visiting the farm, but I still found time to get out for a morning run and cool down walk.
Thursday
Drive home from the farm – traffic was even heavier than Tuesday, but at least it was moving steadily and it wasn’t raining.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 4 miles
• Average pace: 9:26
• Elevation gain: 206 feet
• Start time: 10:41 AM
• Location: most of my upcoming turkey trot course
• Weather: 38° (feels like 33°), climbing to 40° ( feels like 35°) and sunny
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, ear warmer headband, and visor
Cycling: 10 miles
• Average speed: 16.7 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 12:37 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 66°
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I’ll be honest, I had planned to stay outside after my run for a 1-mile cooldown walk, but hopped on my spin bike (affiliate link) instead so I’d have something to put under cycling on my RunDown infographic. LOL

My sympathies on the back to back I81 drives!
LOL at the cycling so you could fill your space.
Sounds like you had a good week of running and are ready for that Turkey Trot! I’ll be on the road to my mom Thanksgiving, so no Turkey Trot.
Thank you and I know you understand how heavy the tractor trailer traffic is on I-81 after your recent trip. Bummer that you can’t do a turkey trot.
I am not a good car traveler. We definitely fly a lot and love to travel. Glad you had a great birthday! Happy year ahead
I wish I could fly to see my mom, but I’d have to fly into Roanoke, rent a car and drive the final two hours. 🙁
Well, most of my traveling is by car, and my body does not enjoy it. Long legs (ugh) and with my recent hammy/glute, that “region” isn’t happy either. That said, my body doesn’t enjoy airplane travel either, LOL. Glad you had a great birthday, and celebrated it in full (fitness) fashion.
Thanks, Kim, and thanks again for joining me for 6.5 miles on my birthday!
We drive almost everywhere here. The worst is 294 which skirts the Chicago suburbs and connects to Indiana. So.Many.Semis. But nothing beats the double tanker that I saw in California. It’s crazy. We do take the trail when we’re going downtown. And of course, we fly cross country.
Glad you had such a nice birthday!
Thanks, Wendy!
I bet you’re in a similar situation as I am when you go to your lake house. Flying to visit my mom or to the beach house is impractical because we’re usually taking a lot of stuff (food, tools to fix things, etc). Plus there are no nearby airports at either destination.
Yay for all those runs! I’m so glad you got in your birthday run. And I’m glad you felt good with all that running.
I like road trips, but haven’t had a chance to do many lately. Not that my body likes sitting in the car- i have to stop every couple hours or so to stretch. But I like seeing where I’m going, from the road.
Good luck with the Turkey Trot!
Thanks, Jenny! Are you doing a turkey trot on Thursday or over the weekend?
When I make the trip to visit my mom, I drink lots of water so I have to stop often to use the restroom and walk; otherwise, I don’t want to stop just to walk.
Great that your running is feeling good!
Recently we’ve been flying a lot, but usually, it’s road trips.
I did race this weekend! Now it’s time to go into recovery mode. Have fun with the turkey trot!
Thanks, Michelle! Yes, you deserves some recovery TLC after your recent races. 🙂
Hooray for 3 rain-free runs.
God luck on your Turkey trot. I am running one too.
Depends on where I am going.. to NYC, train. To Florida – plane. I do not enjoy traveling by car.
My favorite workout was last Sunday – the 15k (perfect weather). Least favorite was yesterday. I really wanted to DNF… brutal winds!!
Thanks, Darlene! Good luck to you at your turkey trot on Thursday as well!
So glad to hear that your runs are feeling good – that’s always something to celebrate!
Good luck at your upcoming Turkey Trot!
Thanks, Kim!
Glad you had a fun birthday and hooray for 3 runs! That is something that did not happen for me last week. I found myself on my spin bike more than usual thanks to the polar temps. Enjoy your Turkey Trot! Should be warmer here for Thanksgiving!
Thanks, Marcia! Sadly, three runs in one week for me is an anomaly these days. Here’s hoping you have warmer weather for Thanksgiving.
We definitely road trip more than anything else. I hate flying, although I love traveling. Sometimes, cars are just easier/cheaper.
I have a Turkey Trot on Thursday, too. I’m excited!
Have fun running in your turkey trot!
I don’t mind flying, it’s just that where we travel most often (to see my mom and to the beach house) don’t have airports anywhere near them so after landing we’d have to rent a car and drive two hours to our final destination.
What a treat to have runs feel great!
I’m not a great road-tripper/driver, so I sympathize on that.
Happy Thanksgiving Debbie!
Thanks, Jessie! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! Did you have to work?
