A Very Merry Christmas
And
A Happy New Year!
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Drive home from the farm
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:35 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 58 feet
• Start time: 5:33 PM
• Location: neighborhood streets
• Weather: 34° F (feels like 28° F)
• What I wore: tights, l/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
I saved my run until the evening so I could admire Christmas lights throughout our neighborhood. I’ve learned that many people turn their lights off at the end of the evening and the streets are far less festive during my pre-dawn runs. Check out my Instagram for pictures of more exciting displays than the simple lights on our Japanese maple.
Tuesday
Cycling: 15 miles
• Average speed: 16.8 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:46 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63° F
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I was so busy after my run the previous night that I didn’t have time to do much more than shower so I skipped rolling or stretching with the promise to myself to do both the next morning. I kept my promise, and boom, they were both completed after riding my spin bike (affiliate link).
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Cycling: 1.27 miles
• Average speed: 12.6 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 59 feet
• Start time: 4:38 PM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 38°
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, fleece jacket, nylon vest, and gloves
Santa brought me a new gravel bike a few days early! I bought a Cannondale Topstone in August 2021, but it just never felt like the right fit even though the shop owners worked with me to try to get it adjusted correctly. My husband had been on the lookout for a replacement and when he stumbled across this Salsa Warbird (my dream bike), he ordered it. We’d checked this fall, but the local Salsa dealers were sold out and didn’t expect any new shipments until March 2023.
Even though it was 38° I took it out for a quick spin around our neighborhood, shivering and smiling from ear-to-ear the entire time! The Warbird is so responsive and handles really well. Perhaps it will make me faster!
Thursday
Cycling: 20 miles
• Average speed: 16.9 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 6:01 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Kim and I hadn’t worked out “together” in forever so we planned a 6 AM (5 AM for her) FaceTime ride on our spin bikes. We had so much to catch up on that the miles absolutely flew by. I am so grateful that my blog has brought Kim and other friends from around the world my way.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:20 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 45 feet
• Start time: 10:37 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 11° F (feels like -2°F ) and mostly sunny
• What I wore: tights, l/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and double ear warmer headbands
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:33
• Elevation gain: 0 feet
• Start time: 12:11 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 65° F
• What I wore: tights and jog bra
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
As grateful as I am to have a treadmill (affiliate link), I only use it when running or walking outside is not an option. After seeing posts of local friends who had run outside in the very frigid weather, I knew it would be fine for me, too. Luckily, I had the flexibility to wait until it had warmed up a tad and had a pretty comfortable run.
After my run I returned inside to my treadmill for a short walk. I can run in the cold, but the temps were a little too cold for a walk.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: December 12 – 17 / Another Great Year at the Farm
- • Tuesday – 2022: My Year in Bling
- • Thursday – A Little Girl in Search of the Perfect Christmas Tree
Questions:
- • Are you experiencing extremely cold weather? ~ After rain all day Thursday and early Friday, we watched the wind pick up and the temperature plummet as the rain moved out (their paths crossed for about an hour and we were treated to sleet). Our low on Saturday morning was 7° with a feels like of -5°. That’s cold for December here in our part of Virginia.
- • What was your favorite workout of the week? ~ No doubt my favorite workout was riding bikes virtually with Kim!
- • Did you run in a race this past weekend? ~ No
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Congrats on the early present! Enjoy!
Yes, it is very cold right now, hence no dogwalks & one antsy dog.
Merry Christmas, Debbie!
Thanks, Judy, I can’t wait for it to warm up enough to go on an actual ride! Hopefully, it will warm up enough soon so Bandit can get out for a walk.
Yes, my favorite workout was our Thursday ride <3, but ((ironically)) the 4-miler on the ‘mill was in close contention because it was such a mental victory, LOL.Enjoy your day, and Merry Christmas!
That’s awesome that your treadmill run wasn’t as bad as you were afraid it might be!
Merry Christmas!
That bike is a beauty and I predict many speedy miles on it! Yes, we got really cold this week but since I was sidelined with illness, it didn’t really affect my workouts. I’m going to try to go for a short run this morning, though.
Thanks, Wendy! I hope you’re feeling better and your run went well.
Merry Christmas!
Nice bike! I haven’t opened presents yet, so I don’t know if Santa brought me any cycling gear, but there’s really nothing I “need”.
I plan to wear my holiday legging around the house today — it’s too cold to wear mine outside!
Merry Christmas!
Thanks, Coco! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas. Santa was nice to you with that new bike.
I agree. I saw runners outside and I ran too. It wasn’t bad as I thought. I was glad I went outside.
No race this weekend but a fun one on New years.
Yes, Santa was very nice! Hope your New Year’s Day race goes well!
Merry Christmas!
Well… I know the northerners are laughing at us, but we have VERY cold weather for South Florida- 42 degrees on Christmas morning! We’re loving it.
That’s a great Christmas present! I like the picture of the bike with the wreath. And, how fun that you had a workout with Kim! I also like that picture of you high-fiving each other.
Merry Christmas!!! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.
We just talked to the Florida kids and it’s 39° in Punta Gorda. They said Pablo is loving it and wants to be outside.
Yes, Kim and I had a great workout together!
Merry Christmas!
Oooh love the early present!!! Nice week of workouts, especially during this crazy time of year.
Thanks, Melissa!
What a pretty new gravel bike!!! I would buy your old one from you if I were your neighbour, ha!
Did you get to choose the colour? I love it!
Thanks, Catrina! Most important was finding a carbon Warbird with electronic shifters, and I just got extremely lucky that it was pink (my first choice in color).
That’s a great week of workouts! Here in Ireland we’re back to quite normal temperatures for the season, anything from 3 to 10C, mixed rain with sunshine. My favourite workout this week was the strength session on Tuesday that was savage this week!
Thanks, Susanne! And yay for such a great strength training session on Tuesday!
It’s supposed to warm up here by the weekend to unseasonably warm temps for New Year’s Eve/Day.
What a fun early present! Here’s to many happy miles together! It’s 12 degrees here this morning and it feels like a heat wave.
Thanks, Marcia!
Our temps are supposed to start warming up to above normal on Wednesday in a crazy temperature swing.
Congrats on the new bike! I know you will use it often. What is your temp cut off for outside cycling? Hope you had a very Merry Christmas
Thanks, Deborah! I really don’t like riding in temps below the low 40’s, mainly because my fingers get so cold. I bought a huge box of hand warmers at Costco with the hopes of using them and braving the winter weather – so far, though, I haven’t. I just checked back on two January rides in 2021 and it was 36° at the start of both. One warmed up nicely, but the other didn’t. In fact the one had a feels like temperature of 29°. I remember being miserable that entire ride and bailed after 30 miles when the rest of the group rode 55 miles.
Hope that you had a great Christmas, and congrats on your new bike!
I love when houses decorate for any holiday – Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. It’s always fun to see something like that during a run 🙂
Thank, Kim! I hope you and your family had a nice Christmas as well!
And yes, anything to distract us from our run, right?
I love the new bike!! How exciting! Congrats. What an especially nice surprise that you got it early.
Thanks, Lisa!
Oh, that bike is super pretty! And your leggings are so cute! So glad you had a chance for a virtual ride with Kim!
