Fitting it all In
After talking last week about how strength training is as routine to me as brushing my teeth, I missed my Wednesday lifting session. With a much lighter than normal Wednesday work schedule, I slept in until 6 AM and jumped into a paperwork project for my mom, stopping only to train the two clients on the day’s schedule. By the time I finished the project, work, dinner, etc., I was no longer motivated to workout. And that my friends, is why I almost always workout first thing in the morning.
I’ve also been less than motived to get outside on my bike. On Saturday, my husband and I chose to do an easy ride on the W&OD Trail on our road bikes. It was exactly what I needed to get my mojo back and while out riding I promised myself that I’d get my Tuesday/Thursday morning rides back on the calendar this coming week.
And finally, those huge painting projects took up so much time that I pretty much quit going on walks and skipped a few weekend rides. Now that my DIY painting projects are behind me (one is still looming that I’ll start in a few months), I’m committed to getting back on track in all aspects of my fitness routine.

It was later than planned when my husband and I got out for our ride (on our road bikes) because we had a few things around the house to take care of prior to our ride. We timed it perfectly, though, because on our way back from an out-and-back W&OD Trail loop we stopped in at the bike shop that sponsors the VeloPigs. The piggies were just returning from their gravel ride and we got to visit even though we hadn’t ridden with them.

For me, motivation definitely waxes and wanes, especially when I’m training for something. I’m getting ready to head up to the trails in Wisconsin with some of my running friends. If it wasn’t for them, i would have slept in!
Yes, meeting friends for a run is definitely a motivator to get out of bed. 🙂
I have a really hard time working out later in the day. So many other things are pulling for my attention.
We might venture out your way on the W&OD next weekend. We haven’t done that end of the trail in ages!
Sounds fun! I don’t know what my riding plans are yet, but I’ll keep a weather eye out for you if I’m on the W&OD Trail.
My body also has a time that I prefer to workout and that is mid morning. I sometimes get off track while traveling but I am just too tired in the afternoons to do it. I have completely lost my motivation for outdoor cycling maybe bc I don’t really have an outdoor training buddy.
Let me know if you’re interested in me coming your way for a ride on the trail.
I’m with ya on getting the workouts done first thing in the morning. While I can usually muster the mojo to do stuff after work (or later in the day), I had a serious time psyching myself up for my final relay leg yesterday. It was my third leg, and four miles in distance, but it wasn’t until 7:00 that I got the ‘baton” and took off. I had been dreading it ever since finishing my second leg, LOL, but the mojo did come though for me. WHEW!
You are so good at doing add-on (or bonus) workouts later in the day. Glad your mojo came through and you had a good final leg of the relay. 🙂
Missing a workout here & there definitely isn’t a problem. And dealing with helping our aging parents can be so very draining. Hope you are feeling much more motivated this coming week!
Definitely true on both accounts. And thanks, yesterday’s easier ride on the trail was exactly what I needed to get my mojo back.
I think we all probably go through cycles of ebbs and flows with motivation. For strength, I definitely have to switch things up to get excited about it. It sounds like you and Kim have a good thing going for motivation though!
Yes, Kim and I have a fun thing going!
Yes, it’s SO hard to work out later in the day! I know some people do it all the time, but I find it very difficult. I don’t think your week was all that bad- you still got in two days of strength training, a run and several bike rides. Maybe you just needed a slightly easier week for whatever reason- you’ll probably wake up raring to go tomorrow morning.
Like I tell my clients, Three days of strength training is idea, two is better than one, and one is better than none.” Overall my motivation is pretty good, I was just finding it difficult to get outside on my bike for my weekday rides. Yesterday’s ride was exactly what I needed and I even got up early today for a solo ride before getting ready for a family barbecue. 🙂
Morning workouts! The other day I had such a busy schedule that I had to break up my long run into 3 parts. Getting that last part done in the evening was tough mentally.
Your steps still average over 15’000/day although you wrote down “none”. I think you did very well this week!!
Good for you for getting your long run done even though you had to break it into three parts. To me, that would make it so much harder to complete so kudos to you!
Yes, even though I didn’t go for any dedicated walks, I still got in plenty of steps last week. Just training my clients and doing stuff around the house gets me plenty of steps.
I’m the same way. If I don’t workout early, life inevitably gets in the way and my workout won’t happen. It’s so easy to push it off. The struggle is real sometimes!
We’re just way too busy!
Solid week, even if your mojo was taking a break.
I’ve been feeling a little unmotivated lately but that’s ok. I just keep going for it. No great workouts for me this week. It’s summer and everything is swampy.
Swampy… ugh! We’re enjoying a delightful spell of temperatures in the 70’s, but with low humidity. I’m enjoying it because I know the humidity is coming soon!
I definitely lose mojo and more often than I’d care to admit. But sometimes forcing myself does the trick. Also asking myself if it’s really physical or mental (why I don’t want to do a particular workout, etc) and if it’s mental I go. I have quite some conversations with myself these days. Sometimes even going through the motions eventually leads to feeling good about doing something, feel excited!
Unfortunately not one workout last week was one that I thought was my favorite. Maybe this week. Really wanted to get out on the bike but instead we went to a concert. Not the worst trade though haha!
Yes, we all lose our mojo from time to time. I guess what’s most important is that we figure out why, regroup, and get back at it.
My scheduled plan is running every other day and skipping a workout is a little problem for me: I feel guilty.
As you, I prefer to run in the morning but in this period I go in the afternoon to do it with a couple of friends.
Last week 2 workouts and 1 race.
Ah yes, running with friends is fun and makes it worth waiting until the afternoon.
I definitely can lose my workout mojo a few times a year. When that happens, I take off a day or two to re-asses and see where I want to put my energy. I haven’t been feeling like running lately, so I’ve been doing more powerwalks.
Good for you, sounds like a great work around!
Weather definitely interferes with my mojo… cold wet dreary days make me want to stay home… like today.
Yes I had a race!!! And it was my favorite of the week despite the rain.
Hope your mojo returns this week.
Thanks, Darlene, and yes, my mojo is back.
Your race weekend sounded fun despite the rain.
I was really hoping to get out on my first group ride tonight, but then it got really windy, and I felt a bit off. So, hopefully next week it will happen! And, yep, the motivation factor is lacking a bit by the time 6:30pm rolls around, but hopefully it will happen 🙂
I hear you. We have Thursday evening ladies’ group rides and I’ve yet to make one.
