A Jimmy Buffett Kind of Tribute
I regularly rotate between my road and gravel bikes showing both pretty much equal amounts of love. I hadn’t, however, ridden my beach cruiser since last Labor Day weekend when we were on the Outer Banks. After hearing the sad news on Saturday morning that Jimmy Buffett had died, I decided to go for a little tribute cruise on my beach bike while listening to his music. The only thing missing was sand between my toes and a margarita in my hand.
Later in the day, though…
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 25 miles
• Average speed: 12.8 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: gravel
• Elevation gain: 1,621 feet
• Start time: 10 AM
• Location: LCHS loop
• Weather: 77° and sunny, climbing to 84°
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
After a 1-year hiatus, I joined the Gravel Rats for a ride (my husband had joined them occasionally on days I couldn’t). The roads were extremely dusty and in terrible condition with washboards galore. In fact, for the first time ever I lost a water bottle while bouncing down a hill. I didn’t even notice it had popped out until my husband, who had almost run over it, yelled for me to stop. I was happily reunited with my filthy and scraped up water bottle after another rider stopped to retrieve it for me.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
In addition to strength training, I also sneaked in a 1-mile untimed walk.
Tuesday
Cycling: 40 miles
• Average speed: 13.4 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,952 feet
• Start time: 7:53 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Hamilton loop with Thomas Mill and Woodburn climbs
• Weather: 71° and overcast with high humidity and occasional light drizzle, climbing to 74°
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
It felt good to get back out and climb some hills after taking two weeks off from my regular Tuesday hills before and after the Reston Century. As you can see, my bike was rearing to go! BTW, I looked it up and both “raring to go” and “rearing to go” are acceptable; although, raring is preferred.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 2 miles / 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:52 minute/mile / 14:39 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 112 feet / 63 feet
• Start time: 6:15 AM / 8:06 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 75° and cloudy with a very light drizzle / 76° and cloudy
• What I wore: shorts and tank
I didn’t get out early enough to complete my 3-mile walk before seeing my first client so I had to stop and train her before going back out to finish my walk.
Last week I mentioned that I’d ordered clip-on running lights (affiliate link). I tried one of them out for the first time and it worked great although it was a little bright hanging so close to my face. I ended up moving it to the strap of my SPIbelt (affiliate link) and that worked well.
Thursday
Running: 4 miles
• Average pace: 10:18 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 92 feet
• Start time: 6:08 AM
• Location: neighborhood streets
• Weather: 64° and cloudy
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Walking: 1.25 miles
• Average pace: 15:13 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 48 feet
• Start time: 6:57AM
• Location: neighborhood streets
• Weather: 64° and cloudy to mostly sunny
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Stretching: 10 minutes
I stepped outside a few minutes later than planned and snapped a picture for my collage with Kim just as the sky was starting to lighten. It was cloudy enough at first that I couldn’t see the blue moon until I rounded a curve near the end of my run, and there it was, huge and beautiful in the already blue sky. After my run, I cooled down with a walk.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body (broken into 2 30-minute segments)
Cycling: 40 miles
• Average speed: 14.3 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,611 feet
• Start time: 5:21 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail to Reston with Hunter Station loop
• Weather: 54° and clear, climbing to 65° and sunny
• What I wore: bike bibs, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
A rare Friday morning without early clients, I was able to join my husband and our Dawn Patrol friends for a ride. With a pre-dawn roll, I started out not too chilly in my short sleeved jersey, but we rode through a few cooler pockets where I got downright cold. Once home, I hit the weights for upper body and saved my tired legs until later in the day.
Saturday
Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 14:43 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 124 feet
• Start time: 9:02 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 68° and sunny, climbing to 73°
• What I wore: shorts, t-shirt, and visor
Cycling: 10K
• Average speed: 9.7 MPH
• Bike: Cruiser Lux
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 117 feet
• Start time: 10:08 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 74° and sunny, climbing to 78°
• What I wore: shorts, t-shirt, and visor
I woke up pumped for the first Saturday of college football, but my excitement quickly turned to sadness when I heard that Jimmy Buffett had died. In tribute, I listened to his music during my run and even got my beach cruiser out for a short ride.

I was sad to hear about Jimmy Buffet. His songs set the perfect mood for relaxing on the patio or a porch. Your beach cruiser ride was a great tribute.
Your recaps just reinforce that I would not enjoy gravel riding!
Yes, we always enjoyed listening to him while at the beach house…
Gravel definitely isn’t for everyone. I enjoy that it’s much more challenging than road riding and you never know quite what to expect. There’s nothing like the exhilaration of flying down a hill dodging potholes and avoiding piled up loose gravel that might send you into a skid. It’s definitely not for everyone and I’m kinda surprised that this “usually cautious” gal loves it so much. 🙂
Not a margarita drinker or I would have been toasting to the legend as well. Nice week of biking and running for you. Stay cool this week ahead!
It’s gonna be a toasty one!
I wasn’t a big Jimmy Buffet fan — not that I dislike him, just that I didn’t listen to his music except when it played on the radio. But he was young, so that makes it sadder, of course.
I have not heard rearing to go, LOL!
Sounds like you had some really great cycling this week!
I typed “rearing to go” even though I always say “raring to go”. But then I started questioning myself so I looked it up. Apparently in parts of England and the USA’s south (I’m from the south) and midwest, rear is pronounced and spelled rare. I hope that clarifies it for you because it doesn’t for me. LOL
Nice tribute to Jimmy Buffet- margarita and all!
Sounds like you had a great week- I like the full moon photo. I was also “running” (in the pool, sigh) Thursday morning while I looked at the moon.
As you know I’m a Baylor fan- they lost last night, sob! We’ll get ’em next week though.
Thanks, Jenny!
Sorry you had to enjoy the full moon from running in the pool, but it sounds like it was a smart move.
I didn’t know Jimmy Buffet until I read your post. I checked his song “Margaritaville” but even that one I didn’t know. His songs are very soothing and relaxing.
At least now I’ve closed that knowledge gap!
You lost your bottle on a ride?! That must have been a very bumpy ride, my goodness! Great job!
Margaritaville was Jimmy Buffett’s biggest hit and launched his career. I remember playing his Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes cassette in my car before I had my sons and then later singing along with them to it while driving around.
Yes, the gravel roads were in terrible shape with lots of dust, washboards, and potholes. Of course, that’s part of the draw of riding gravel – the challenges and never knowing exactly what to expect.
Jimmy Buffett’s death hit me harder than I expected–we used to listen to his music so much back in our younger years, especially on the boat up at the lake in the summer. Lots of good memories associated with those songs. I’ve been listening to it in the car. Funny how I know all the words. My favorite song? Too many to count but probably none of his hits would make the list. I love Growing Older Not Up, A Pirate Turns 40, and Tampico Trauma…just to name a few. Saw him live a few times, the best were before he was famous. What a legend!
I never saw him in concert and wish I had…
You got some great rides in this week, including a tribute to Jimmy Buffet. Nice! I don’t think I know a lot of his music, might be that I am too young or because I didn’t grow up in the US (or both).
Yes, I suspect both. You’re probably close to my sons ages and they know his music because I used to play it in the car when they were young.
I have not yet done a margarita toast to Jimmy (my bad), so that’s on my to-do list. You know my favorite team (and alma mater) are the UofIA Hawks! I did honor them on yesterday’s ride 😉
Your Hawkeyes beat one of my husband’s alma maters last night (from grad school). 😉
I never listened to Jimmy Buffett but I knew about him. Alan Jackson was my favourite country singer for a long time and didn’t he do a recording with Jimmy on the Five o’clock somewhere song?
40 miles cycling in one day – wow, that’s some nice work! The gravel ride sounds like fun despite the water bottle event.
Your cocktails look amazing!
Yes, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett’s recording of It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere was a big hit! I felt like I nailed it when making those margaritas. Jimmy would have been pleased.
I didn’t know Jimmy Buffett but now I’m going to listen his songs.
I learned to enjoy the full moon runs thanks to the Kim’s posts and since last month it is part of my running schedule.
Have a good week.
I think a lot of people are enjoying full moon workouts thanks to Kim!
Big fun… saw him in concert 3 times. Love all his music… hard to pick one… Son of a sailor, Growing Older Not Up. Changes in Attitudes…
I listened to his music all weekend… I definitely need a margarita.
Such fun memories for you!
I own a set of those lights you ordered. I love them!! They are also perfect for parking a camper when it’s dark out 😉 So many uses!

Cool, and yes, I use my headlamp for non-running projects, too. It’s so handy having them around.
Nice tribute to Jimmy Buffet! 76 is just too young.
Great job logging all those cycling miles!
Thanks, Michelle! And yes, 76 is too young to die. 🙁
Love that you were able to join back in with the cycling group!
I always liked Jimmy Buffett, but more in a background music way and not a main act way, if that makes sense. I know his more popular songs by name, but the rest sort of blends together for me. That being said, his vibe was fabulous and it’s a huge loss.
I’m a Miami Hurricane. That’s my alma mater and my team. That being said, I have a serious love-hate relationship with big sports right now (there are so many nasty things that go on behind the scenes, and I have a hard time supporting that), so I tend not to really watch the games anymore.
