Waning Days of Fall
I tried to get outside as much as possible this past week because I suspect the weather isn’t going to stay this nice much longer. I made it out every day except for Friday when we got snow flurries during the morning before it turned to rain in the afternoon.
The farm got about a half inch of snow late Thursday afternoon which had all melted by noon on Saturday. With an elevation of over 2,000 feet higher than where we live, the farm regularly gets more snow.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Hiking: 3.13 miles
• Average pace: 18.31 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 149 feet
• Start time: 12:52 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails and side trails
• Weather: 58° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, jacket, and visor
It was National Hiking Day so I got out for a hike. I won’t lie, I was hoping for a badge from Garmin, but apparently NHD isn’t on their radar.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Cycling: 42.31 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 14.1 MPH
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,450 feet
• Start time: 12:41 PM
• Location: W&OD Trail Sterling/Hamilton loop
• Weather: 69°, mostly sunny, and breezy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, and fingerless gloves
My husband and I took advantage of the fantastic weather, especially for mid-November, with a longer ride. I often see a flock of chickens eating along the trail just west of Leesburg. Usually they ignore me, but occasionally they’ll flap their wings and run in every direction if I startle them. Needless to say I was cautious when I had to scoot between them and a walker as I followed my husband out the trail. No sure what to say, I shouted, “On your left, and chickens, on your right.” Hopefully, I made the man smile as I rode by.
Tuesday
Cycling: 30.27 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 14.4 MPH
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 978 feet
• Start time: 11:44 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Reston loop
• Weather: 59° and mostly cloudy with a light drizzle the last mile
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, jacket, and fingerless gloves over nitrile gloves
What a difference a day makes! Ten degrees cooler and with the sun covered by clouds, I was chilly for the first half of our ride. I was surprised when I got a gale watch notification on my Garmin during the ride; although, the impending storm wasn’t forecast to roll in for about 36 hours.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 4.09 miles
• Average pace: 15:12 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 206 feet
• Start time: 3.10 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 65° mostly cloudy, dropping to 63°
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, and visor
With pretty ugly weather in the forecast, I got out for a longer walk, surmising that if I was stuck on my treadmill the following day, I’d rather be on it for a shorter walk.
Thursday
Walking: 4.28 miles
• Average pace: 15.22 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 195 feet
• Start time: 5:32 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 41° and clear, dropping to 39°
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, puffer jacket, ear warmer headband, and gloves with mittens on top (took mittens off after two miles)
So much for panicking and going on a longer walk the previous day since I thought I’d be stuck inside on either my treadmill or spin bike due to the impending storm. Well, the storm blew through in about three hours the previous evening and I awoke to a clear sky. Kim wasn’t so lucky, though, and had to stay in her garage on her treadmill.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Cycling: 12 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.3 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:36 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 64°
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
Walking: 2.14 miles
• Average pace: 14.35 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 83 feet
• Start time: 8:54 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 48°, mostly sunny, and windy
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, and visor
After a ride on my spin bike, I ventured outside into the wind for a walk.

Questions:
- • How is the weather in your neck of the woods? ~ For late November, I can’t complain.
- • What are your Thanksgiving plans? ~ For the first time in years I won’t be running in a turkey trot or cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I will be making a couple of dishes to take as we we celebrate with family, though.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? ~ no
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

We’ve been having great weather until this past week, when we got snow and rain and wind. Ick. It’s not bad today–the sun is out. But we’re going into the freezer this week. Sigh
I’m going to my sister’s house for Thanksgiving. My boys and their GFs will be there too, so I’m happy! Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
I’m so not ready for the cold weather, but do I really have a choice. LOL
Happy Thanksgiving!
Knock wood we haven’t any “real” snow yet, though there were a lot of flurries circling about on Wednesday. I know that will soon change, though. My Thanksgiving plans are still up in the air, but I will be trotting (just not sure where, LOL).
I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving wherever your plans take you!
Well this week we had snow, so I’m already over winter and it hasn’t even started! Thankfully it rained the next day and melted it all.
We are traveling this week but I’m planning on doing a Turkey Trot with my son this year so hopefully it goes well!
Have fun at your turkey trot with your son! Happy Thanksgiving!
I haven’t been on my bike in ages! Soon I’ll be wimping out due to the weather. Today would have been a great day for a ride, but I was worn out after Thanksgiving grocery shopping and table linen ironing ….
I hope you enjoy your day with family.
Going out for a ride takes so much longer than a run – just getting the gear ready is time consuming (there’s a funny meme about how long it takes to get ready for a ride). I really would have loved to ride yesterday, but didn’t have that much time to spare.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I see an Osage orange in your picture! I was just having a conversation today with my husband about what their uses are. They look so pretty and interesting! We’ve had some warmer November days here, but I am excitedly waiting for the snow!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly workouts – almost turkey time!
There was an Osage orange tree just down the trail from where I took the picture that had hundreds of them under it. Do you also call them hedge apples? That’s what I grew up calling them. I wish I’d taken a picture, but by then I was on my bike and didn’t see it until I was riding by. We have an Osage orange tree behind our house and I sometimes gather them to use as fall decorations.
I was just about to ask about that weird-looking green thing when I saw Lisa’s comment and googled “Osage Orange”. I wanted to know whether they were edible (no, they’re not!).
November has really been treating you well, even riding with shorts! How cool is that?!
A lot of snow hit Switzerland last week and I got many beautiful photos from family and friends.
What dishes will you be making to take along for Thanksgiving Dinner?
I grew up calling Osage oranges, hedge apples, which is a common nickname. We have an Osage orange tree behind our house and I sometimes gather them to use as fall decorations.
Oh, I bet those pictures of Switzerland’s fresh snowfall you’re receiving are stunning!
I’m making a sweet potato casserole and deviled oranges to take for Thanksgiving dinner.
Overall it’s been joyfully mild here for this late in the season. We did have that impromptu blizzard last week but the snow melted quickly. It was a mess driving though. I am hosting and it looks like I’m cooking for 17 at this point. I need to get going. Happy Thanksgiving!
Sounds fun! Happy Thanksgiving!
5k yesterday for a group I coached. So cold and windy!!!!!!!!!!
Our weather had been great all Fall but then we got rain and cold temps… not ready for winter yet.
%k on Thursday but dinner at my MIL so no cooking.
Happy Thanksgiving.
I’m not ready for winter either, unless we get a pretty snow and then I’ll be happy (but done with snow for the rest of the winter).
