My first memories of running were at my parents’ summer picnics, where my brother and I would race our cousins around our house. My brother is four years older than me, so he always won!
If running is child’s play, why do so many adults forget how to play?
- Questions:
- What is your first memory of running?
- Did you ever have to run “for punishment” in other sports?
- Who can name the languages above?
My first memory of running is playing tag with all of my cousins at my cousin’s farm during our family reunion that we’d have each summer. I also can remember playing soccer in kindergarten, back when everyone just looked like a flock of geese chasing the ball.
We had to run for punishment in soccer all the time. Sprints were often for punishment. One time in high school a bunch of the players got caught drinking at a party and we ran for 2 hours straight around the soccer field in 80 degree August weather.
I don’t recognize many of them! I see English (duh!) and Spanish and French I think.
Ha, we had that same thing happen to my team in college when one of the underagers had to go to the hospital. She felt GREAT the next day because she got an IV/banana bag all night and everyone else was hung over. It was nothing but 2 hours of sprints and non-stop moving.
My first memory of running is also playing tag in the yard with my brothers and the neighbors.
I ran for punishment in basketball and volleyball. That, and for preseason workouts in college. Yuck and yikes!
What a fun post!!
We ran for punishment a lot in soccer, and my teammates hated me because I LOVED it!
I love your last line! “If running is child’s play, why do so many adults forget how to play?”
I feel like a care free, light, happy kid when I run trails on the weekends. It’s so much different than my runs during the week. I actually have a post going up tonight about a video I saw about it.
Can’t wait to see it!
Hi Deb, just found my way over here from…Logan’s M&M (I think?)…and of course, dork that I am, I’m always intrigued by a quiz. So (cross my heart) I’m doing this Google-free:
Ejecutar: Look Spanish, although it’s not the word I know…
Lauffen: German
Courir: Portuguese?
Courit: French
Jikko: Japanese?
Unray: Kenyan (just guessing)
Alti: Esperanto (totally guessing)
I don’t really remember running specifically for punishment, but we did always have to run during swim season pre-season. At the time, I hated it and used to say that I was a fish and not designed for land. My, how life has changed! 🙂
Hi Holly! I’m glad you found me; I’ll pop over to your blog and check it out! Here are the answers:
Ejecutar: Spanish
Lauffen: German
Courir: French
Currit: Latin
Jikko: Japanese
Unray: Pig Latin 🙂
Alti: Cherokee (my great, great grandmother was Cherokee)
BTW, “Run” is the only work I knew without the help of Google!
[…] Thursday, I posted One Word… and wrote the word “RUN” in several different languages; then asked if you knew which […]
I remember the very first time I had to run a mile was in 6th grade and I did it in 8:07. I was so happy with myself, I will never forget that number. But it had to take probably a decade or so for me to start running consistently.
