Three weeks after running the Nike Women’s 8K on Mother’s Day, I ran the Herndon Festival 10K on June 4th. The race wove its way through historic downtown Herndon, VA, a quaint little town not too far from the health club where I worked. 1989 marked the 9th year of the Herndon Festival which is still going strong today in its 38th year.
The family friendly festival includes several days of carnival rides, crafts, a Saturday night fireworks display, and the running of the 5K/10K races on Sunday morning.
Once again, I was running the race with friends from the Health Club of Reston; and once again, Bill and 20-m0nth-old Joseph were on hand to cheer me on and take pictures. Pictured below running with me is my coworker, Pam, who had just heard Bill call my name. She turned to point toward the sound of his voice, but couldn’t find him. I didn’t hear him and missed seeing my cheering squad.
I had just found out that I was pregnant with our second child, Daniel. I’m sure it was the heat and humidity that slowed me down rather than my pregnancy.
Once again, Bill was poised to capture me as I picked up the pace as I set my sights on the finish line.
I finished the 1989 Herndon Festival 10K with a time of 56:54 (9:10 pace). I have no idea where I finished within my age group because race results from that far back are not posted online and if I didn’t keep a record, I’m out of luck…
- Questions:
- Local runners, have you run the Herndon Festival 10K (or 5K)?
- How do you keep records of your previous races? ~ I write the date, my time, pace, and age group place on the back of my bib; however, for this race I doubt I even looked it up after the race. I am also on Athlinks, but unfortunately, I’ve only been able to claim results back to 1997.
- What would be your favorite thing to do at a festival, enjoy a carnival ride or shop for crafts?
So much fashion has changed since the 80s, but somehow runners don’t look as drastically different. Love these historical looks
Thanks! It is fun to look back at the runner’s fashion AND hair!
I wrote my time of the back of both bibs I wore in races. Those were the days. I would love to check out the crafts at a race festival – but if there’s food around, it’ll have to wait!
One must refuel after a race! 😉
Love it that you still have race bibs from 1989! Although I have run for over 30 years, I didn’t start racing until 2003. I still have all of my bibs. I write the name of the race, location, my time, and if I win an age group award on the back of each one.
It sounds like we’re pretty similar in our record keeping!
Herndon Festival was my first 10K in 2012. I was so nervous!! I ran it with a much faster runner friend and he was going to help me finish it. And I managed to finish with a 9:09 pace, which I was astounded by! I ran the race again in 2013, at a 9:28 pace by myself. I remember the humidity from that race well.
The way I keep track of all my races by year, time I finished in and placement by age group, ect, is I have a Google Document called ‘Races, Places and Paces’. I fell in love with the title when I made it up in 2012 when I started running. With close to 60 races, I can easily spot my PR on every distance with a different color. What a way to motivate and have a friendly competition with yourself next go around!!
Wow, you ran a great first race! Your Google doc sounds like a smart way to go.
I love your throwback recaps! It’s so interesting to see how things have changed.
Thank you, Kim! Our fashion and hair have certainly changed a lot!
