Three weeks after running the Nike Women’s 8K on Mother’s Day, I ran the Herndon Festival 10K on June 4th. The race wove its way through historic downtown Herndon, VA, a quaint little town not too far from the health club where I worked. 1989 marked the 9th year of the Herndon Festival which is still going strong today in its 38th year.
The family friendly festival includes several days of carnival rides, crafts, a Saturday night fireworks display, and the running of the 5K/10K races on Sunday morning.
Once again, I was running the race with friends from the Health Club of Reston; and once again, Bill and 20-m0nth-old Joseph were on hand to cheer me on and take pictures. Pictured below running with me is my coworker, Pam, who had just heard Bill call my name. She turned to point toward the sound of his voice, but couldn’t find him. I didn’t hear him and missed seeing my cheering squad.
I had just found out that I was pregnant with our second child, Daniel. I’m sure it was the heat and humidity that slowed me down rather than my pregnancy.
Once again, Bill was poised to capture me as I picked up the pace as I set my sights on the finish line.
I finished the 1989 Herndon Festival 10K with a time of 56:54 (9:10 pace). I have no idea where I finished within my age group because race results from that far back are not posted online and if I didn’t keep a record, I’m out of luck…
- Local runners, have you run the Herndon Festival 10K (or 5K)?
- How do you keep records of your previous races? ~ I write the date, my time, pace, and age group place on the back of my bib; however, for this race I doubt I even looked it up after the race. I am also on Athlinks, but unfortunately, I’ve only been able to claim results back to 1997.
- What would be your favorite thing to do at a festival, enjoy a carnival ride or shop for crafts?
