Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 20 miles
• Average speed: 16.1 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 584 feet
• Start time: 7:22 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Herndon loop to Green Lizard for breakfast
• Weather: 76° and sunny with lower humidity
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
My average speed was 16.1 MPH, ya’ll! Granted, we only had 584 feet of elevation, but still… As I mentioned on Instagram, I’ve pushed my training up a notch and feel like my cycling speed and endurance are finally improving. If I weren’t a wimp during the colder weather, I wouldn’t have to rebuild every summer. Just sayin’.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Tuesday
Cycling: 30 miles
• Average speed: 13.9 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,519 feet
• Start time: 8:11 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Leesburg loop with Thomas Mill and Woodburn climbs
• Weather: 68° and sunny, climbing to 76° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
Since it was our wedding anniversary (42 years!), my husband played hooky from morning work and joined me for some hills. Later, we realized we should have ridden 42 miles in honor of 42 years.
While on the W&OD Trail, we rode right past this snake. I screamed as I practically hit it. It was still there on our way home so we stopped to check it out. Someone had chopped it’s head off – you can thank me for covering the gross parts. Without being able to see whether or not it had a triangular-shaped head it’s impossible for me to identify the species based on it’s markings. It certainly looks like a copperhead with the hourglass shaped stripes, but there are a few non-venomous snakes in the area that look somewhat similar. If you’re a herpetologist, please let me know what kind of snake it is.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 18:42 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 76 feet
• Start time: 3:39 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails to The Wine’ing Butcher
• Weather: 87° and sunny with low humidity
• What I wore: shorts and short sleeved tee
I took a stroll to one of our favorite stores, The Wine’ing Butcher, to pick up chicken and Brussels sprouts before they close on Sunday after ten years of operation. Located just a half mile away if we cut through the park, it’s an easy walk to pick up last minute menu items. I am so sad to see them close.
Thursday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:55 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 161 feet
• Start time: 6:01 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 67° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:42 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 60 feet
• Start time: 6:52 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 68° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Stretching: 10 minutes
With Kim back from RAGBRAI, we resumed our early morning virtual cardio workout together. Fortunately for me, Kim had lots to share about her three days of biking across much of Iowa and did most of the talking while I ran. It’s amazing how I’ve lost the knack of chatting non-stop while running now that I run mostly alone. There was lots of huffing and puffing from me when I tried to talk until I slowed to a walk for my last mile.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Cycling: 33 miles
• Average speed: 12.1 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Warbird
• Surface: gravel
• Elevation gain: 2,113 feet
• Start time: 8:33 AM
• Location: Bluemont gravel loop
• Weather: 69° and partly cloudy, climbing to 73°
• What I wore: bike bibs, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
After seeing a picture on Facebook of a bike leaning against a giant Hereford bull, I knew I needed a picture of my bike leaning against the giant Holstein at Great Country Farms in Bluemont. My husband planned a route for us which would take us past the cow near the end of our ride, but first, there were lots of beautiful places to stop for pictures.
And not only did I get a picture of my bike leaning against the cow, but my husband took a picture of me and the cow. I do love cows!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
That is great that you are feeling a lot stronger on the bike. I am sure you are! You have been putting in serious work that past few years. I have seen big snakes on trail before but idea what they were. I did not get close enough to investigate 🙂
LOL, I wouldn’t normally get that close to a snake either, but my husband noticed the missing head so I was pretty sure it couldn’t bite me. 😉
Eeeek about that snake! I normally don’t worry about snakes, but if I were in a country where I know there are venomous snakes, then I certainly would! I’m quite competent about spiders (I love them) but sadly not about snakes so can’t help with the species.
Nice fitness work this week and I loved all the photos in your anniversary post, how lovely to live an active life together for 40+ years!
The most memorable activity for me this week was to succeed with my previously failed heavier dumbbell chest press!
Thanks, Susanne! And congrats on the increased weight on your chest press!
I don’t love snakes, but I don’t hate them either. I’m not afraid of spiders, but one time I got one in my mouth when I was talking while running and ran through a web stretched across the trail. Luckily, for both the spider and me I was able to spit it out before swallowing it.
Eeww that snake! And who would cut off the head? Did they leave it there? People are just so weird. We don’t have venomous snakes here in the Chicago ‘burbs, but up in Wisconsin there are rattlers-eeeeek!
I too love cows and I want to know if you moo at them when you drive by? I do that, lol
Happy anniversary! 42 years is definitely a tribute to love and compromise!
It was the weirdest thing – it’s not like it was a rattler and they cut the tail off as a trophy.
Of course I moo at cows when I drive or ride by. Isn’t it required? 😉
You know, just this morning it popped into my head that in 12 years, my husband & I will have been married FIFTY years (God willing). Seriously, I remember my parents’ 50th. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Can you see I’ve been reading a lot about aging lately, LOL!
Happy Anniversary to you guys!
That sure does look like a potential copperhead. Yikes! Nice photo of you, your bike, and the cow.
Oh wow, I hadn’t thought of it that way… it’s just 8 more years for us. And yes, it seems like just yesterday my brother and I were planning our parents’ 50th anniversary party.
You probably know I’m all about doing tribute miles for dates or events. The two I get every year are the Week of Pi and a 9/11 run of some sort (9.11 miles or minutes or a clever play on the numbers). That’s not to mention other random dates that are made known to me (like friends’ birthdays, etc.). I didn’t even realize I was monopolizing the conversation with all my Ragbrai chatter, LOL.
LOL, you were not monopolizing the conversation at all. It was part of my ploy to get you to do most of the talking early on while I ran and couldn’t really talk. Plus, I really wanted to know all the details about RAGBRAI!
Happy Anniversary! I never think to run or ride a certain distance until it’s too late. 42 miles would have been a good ride!
Love the cow photo. Ugh on the snake though. 🙁
Thanks, Coco!
Wow, 42 years!!! That is a long time, congratulations! Yes, you should have ridden 42 miles, but I probably wouldn’t have thought of that either.
That is really gross about the snake! Who in the world would cut its head off??? Ew.
Great cow picture! Sounds like you had a really nice week overall.
Thanks, Jenny! We rode 40 miles on our 40th so I don’t know why we didn’t think to ride 42 on our 42nd.
Great mileage for this week on the bike… and happy anniversary. Yes, I run a certain mileage on my birthday, so I can relate to your thought of cycling 42 miles for the anniversary. Next year you can do 43 🙂
Ugh, that is a big snake! I have luckily not encountered snakes on my runs, but I know they’re out there.
Thanks, San!
THAT COW PHOTO!!! How cool is that? You should make that your profile pic on social media, ha!
I love that your husband took his morning off for your anniversary ride. So sweet!
16.1mph with hills is a fantastic speed, Debbie! You would do so well at RAGBRAI – wouldn’t you want to participate next year?
Isn’t that cow the best?
RAGBRAI is definitely on our radar!
Happy anniversary: great idea to ride 42 miles in honor of 42 years.
So sad to see the snake with the head cut off.
Thanks, Stefano!
42 years! That’s amazing! I do try to commemorate important numbers in my runs and workouts if I can. It’s fun.
I love you and the bike and the cow. That’s just so fun!
Thanks, Jenn! Yes, isn’t that cow the best?
Umm…why was its head cut off?? Eeeks. That is a big snake.
Happy anniversary!
Thanks, Jessie!
so sorry I’m so late catching. up but happy anniversary!! I don’t really run special miles for special events anymore, but I used to! maybe I’ll start again some day. Yikes on that snake – honestly why would someone mutilate it like that??
i love cows too. We have highland cows here in the area and I absolutely adore them!
Thanks, Renée!
One of my clients suggested that perhaps whoever killed it cut its head off to confirm if it was a venomous snake. But if that’s the case, why wouldn’t they have pushed it off the trail?
