Last Monday I planned to write about the winners of the men’s and women’s divisions of the 117th Boston Marathon, but that didn’t happen. Since they won the Super Bowl of our sport, I want to recognize these two amazing runners. They started with over 23,000 other runners in Hopkinton on a near perfect race morning for their 26.2-mile run to Boston.
Twenty year old Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia won the marathon with a time of 2:10:22 in a sprint to the finish with two other runners. This was only his second marathon, and his first Boston. Since he is quite young for a Boston winner, I predict we will be hearing a lot more about him in the future!
Thirty-two year old Rita Jeptoo of Kenya won the women’s division with a time of 2:26:25. This was her second Boston win (she won in 2006 as well).
Hiroyuki Yamamoto of Japan won the men’s wheelchair race with a time of 1:25:32, and Tatyana McFadden of the United States won the women’s wheelchair race with a time of 1:45:24.
Congratulations to all of the athletes!
- Question:
- Did you watch the Boston Marathon, or see a replay of the men’s and women’s finish?
Thank you for posting this! And, while I am very American and proud of it, thank you for not obsessing on the Americans. So much of what I heard after the race (before the *other* part) was Shalene was 4th and Kara was 6th. OK…but who was first, second, third, and fifth? I could only listen to the race but it was exciting!
Hooray for the Super Bowl of running! 🙂 I did watch the race on Monday and they both ran amazing races. It is so inspiring to watch them run, as they make such a fast pace look absolutely effortless.
